GameSpy shutting down all hosting

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

This only affects online play other than for UT3. Also, the master servers are configurable so Epic could theoretically spin up their own master servers, it would just mean that no servers would show up until you manually change the setting.

Alternatively, what they should do is release the source for the old games so the community can fix them.

IIRC CD-key verification for UT2004 is also handled by master-server.
I think there are two kinds of CD-key validation in UT2004. The first one is done offline during the launch of the game, and even keygens can generate keys that pass it. The second is done when you open server browser, and this one is actually handled by the master server. So Sir_Brizz should be right.

Fuck you gamespy, google, facebook, mozzila, yahoo, fuck lamespy. </classic>

You may as well add GFWL to that long list of rip-off merchants.

That may mean that they actually care about something other than profit; in effect the games themselves.

That's just awesome and the worst news possible.

Does Atari (whatever is left of them) still have control over whether Epic releases source code (and thus the whole games) for free? I suppose Epic is still selling this stuff on Steam.

They broke the Atari shackles around 2005 allowing UT3 and the Anthology.

Not every publishing deal = the Blood deal.

I think Epic bought back publishing rights for all of the Unreal games a couple of years ago when Midway sank like a fossilized turd. Midway bought all the publishing rights from Atari except UT2003, I think.

The source code for the engines will contain all manner of licensed code, potentially patented code and all manner of nonsense that makes it painful to release publicly. I wouldn't count on ever seeing it.

Looks like Human Head will be saving Rune after all.
Hey, Everyone. This is Tim Gerritsen. First of all, I wanted to say hi and let you know that after a long time gone, I'm back with Human Head. I will be talking to you, the fans and letting you know what is going on with Rune in the future.
For the moment, I just wanted to jump in here and let you know that we are aware of the impending server shut down and that we will be resolving the situation. We're looking at a few options and won't leave the players in the lurch. Fear not- we are not abandoning the game or the players. When I have concrete news, I WILL be posting it here.
I thank you in advance for your patience and apologize that this word has been so long in coming.

What about wheel of time? Last time I played it online there were still couple of servers. Wheel of Time being of a defunct company might make it more difficult to do something about the situation though..
