Our awesome school system

N.C. school selling test scores to raise funds

Quote:
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Wednesday that a parent advisory council at Rosewood Middle School in Goldsboro come up with the fundraising plan after last year's chocolate sale flopped.

The school will sell 20 test points to students for $20.

I'm glad the public education in my county is actually one of the best in the nation.

I guess not all school districts are that smart.

Better than my school system where if you were a gang member then there should be no reason for you to be held back and they just pass you.

The education system in the US is messed up.
If the school has low test scores they get less money from the government. That's why public schools teach to the standardized test and in some cases cheat on them.

Bush and the "no child left behind act" didn't help at all. It lowered the passing grade so more students would pass. (Though the system was having problems before Bush)

Teachers union isn't helping test scores either with teachers getting tenure and not having to worry about getting fired if they decide not to teach that day. They have little incentive to be a better teacher since their pay is based on seniority.

Ohh well. Glad that school district found a way to get funding since they can't charge tuition.

They should get some advice from the Governator. He seems to have some original ideas on how to raise funds.

My 5 year old daughter spouted off the word "echolocation" and it's meaning earlier today. Caught me by surprise for sure, lol.

i am a big fan of NC college system because thay have one of two body farms in the US: http://www.usatoday.com/tech/science...ody-farm_x.htm

Both of which are in driving distance.

Also, i would not want to work there when the undead rise.

The Carolinas, I tell you what.

Changing the topic, but still on the issue of the school system in general, what do you folks feel about the race to the top thing? I'm pretty conflicted myself for the same reasons I was conflicted about the whole NCLB thing. I'm thrilled that more money and focus is being placed on getting results out of the public education system (which has been way too lax and is still way too lax), but it goes about it in only partly satisfactory ways.

throwing money at the problem won't solve it. we already spend as much or more than any other country per student. obviously money isn't the problem. too much bureaucracy is. I fear this will just add to that. again, I haven't looked into it, but using history as a guide...

It's a reward system so money comes because of results, which incentivizes progressive change.
