I am not sure how many years they put into the development of Gears engine and the prototype so I start the timing from when Gears 1 was released.

Gears came out in 2006 and Gears PC doesn't count because it's one of the most horrific port jobs of recent years I've encountered.

You have to acount for the fact that Gears started off as Unreal Warfare too, so it was like totally different game, that retained some themes over. Actual Gears didn't start in developement until like around 2005 afaik.

I played the PC version at PAX East and it felt pretty good in the 5-10 minutes I spent with it.

That's probably the best looking game ever to come out of China. Shame it had to have all the hallmarks of generic western bullet+monster shooter, but it could still be interesting
