Does it bother you when people say "Merry Christmas"?
Just wondering. Let's not turn this into some kind of "bash religion" crap, but do you seriously get bothered when people say "Merry Christmas" to you? Would you prefer "Happy Holidays", if so?

Not at all. It's meaning has changed over the years to really just wish someone well. The happy holidays thing doesn't carry the same feeling.

Why does that bother you? Would you be offended if someone wished you a Happy Kwanzaa or Hanukkah?
By the way, Merry Festivus to all! |

No. Again why would that bother anyone? The person is wishing you well.

No one feels offended by it.
There are just a handful of people who feel the irresistible urge to inform everyone who wishes them a Merry Christmas what their actual beliefs are. They don't feel offended, they just want some attention and "feeling offended by something" is what gets you attention in this over-PC day and age. |

I agree, it shouldn't bother anyone... but some school districts won't allow teachers to say it or hang signs in the halls about it because it would be promoting a holiday for one religion or something dumb. I wouldn't find it offensive if a school hung a Happy Hanukkah sign or a sign for any other religion's winter holiday. It's silly what some people find offensive.
I tend to think like BBA that someone saying Merry Christmas is more well-wishing during the winter holiday and doesn't really have as much meaning for people as it did before (religiously, I mean).

Please ignore this post Santa.
I would find it kind of awkward to be offended by a saying related to my religion of choice, but sure, why not. Screw Christmas.

I'm only offended by the industry sticking christmas into our collective faces 3 months before the actual date and 'last christmas' being broadcasted offensively over those 3 months.

To answer your original question - not in the least offended. I often use the same phrase myself.
Quote:
"Are you bothered when a state organisation favours one1 religion's festival over that of others?" And (since I don't want too big assumption in the question), I'll add separately, "when there is a constitutional separation between church and state". If you phrase the question like that then I suppose the answers might be slightly different. A follow-on question might then be, "Do you agree with the USA's constitutional separation of church and state?2" If so, the school districts are correct. If not (and it is perfectly valid to hold that view), then you need to work to change the constitution first. The recent thread on President Obama's healthcare proposals made it quite clear that many were concerned by the impact on constitutionally protected freedoms and (warning: massive metaphor overload ahead ) the whole slippery slope involved in being "a little bit pregnant". It looks (from the outside) like a very similar slippery slope involved in allowing parts of the state to celebrate explicitly certain religious festivals.Alternatively, one could live, as I do, where the Head of State is not permitted to belong to or marry into a certain religion (doesn't really matter which) and where a recent Prime Minister lived a lie (admittedly, a fairly open lie) for the period of his office, only converting to his chosen religion after he had left office. I know which constitutional arrangement I'd rather have! ![]() (And, whilst I imbibe from the waters of constitutional wish lists, could we have an elected head of state rather than some inbred descendent of a luck robber baron?) 1 strictly, group of related religions. 2 not the exact phrase from the US Constitution |

Happy Hijacked Winter Solstice everyone!
No, I don't care if anyone says Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Happy Holidays, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Yule...etc... But it does bother me when some idiot says "War On Christmas". . Last edited by Lizard Of Oz; 14th Dec 2009 at 05:00 PM. Reason: fixed |

Last year we had a company Christmas party. This year it is known as a "Holiday Party". It doesn't bother me as I could care less, but I can see how it could butt hurt some people.

doesnt bother me at all, what does bother me is endless christmas songs, not because theyre encouraging people to have imaginary friends, but because theres only so many times i can listen to saccharine christmas cheer before i want to stab things

It is perfectly acceptable as long as they hand me a gift or beverage. I prefer Happy Holidays myself, it is a more generic and less commercial greeting. In the US it's all about retail sales you know. What a waste of time and energy. Just take a step back and look at it for what it is.
Please, for those of you who celebrate these days as religious holidays, try to keep your beliefs peaceful and somewhat rational if your able. Try not to hate those who do not share in your specific beliefs.

I still think it's the same issue. Personally I would actually prefer if several different winter holidays were given face time in public schools. They try so hard to protect kids from religion instead of just teaching kids what is out there and to be tolerant of other people. It's kind of sickening.
