Windows 7 & Original UT

If you hit this link below, it pretty much sums up the sound issues that UT has with Creative X-Fi Sound cards in general in Windows 7.

http://forums.creative.com/t5/Sound-...-7/td-p/540228

I know what you are thinking: Either get a different sound card ( forget it -- not happening, no fanboism either, it's just that the sound displacement in original UT, on any properly working X-Fi, stomps all over every game out there -- no game had better sounds & music, & voices than original UT ) or forsake Windows 7 and run UT on good old Windows XP ( probably the more likely scenario, although I'd rather not, Microsux did address the OpenGL issue in Windows 7 & OpenGL works far better in Windows 7 than Vista) .

I hope that many of you will add to my voice over there, assuming you own a Creative sound card & want to play UT on Windows 7. I've tried the Fmod, but it don't work.

I have Windows 7 x64 (build 7057) and Audigy 2 and I have absolutely no problems with UT. Maybe download Creative ALchemy Universal and see if it fix sound issues (it fixed sound issues in .bik files in UT3 and it might work also for UT). Also try OpenAL and change ALDevices (for OpenAL) and FMODDevices (for FMod) maybe it'll fix all errors.

When I installed UT on WinXP the sound was totally awful. A friend had the same problem and did some searching about a fix and got it fixed by changing the latency in the ini file. See if that does something for your game because it fixed mine as well.

I changed it from 40 to 120...

[Galaxy.GalaxyAudioSubsystem]
Latency=120

darkmedor, I don't know if Win7 lets you set programs to be compatable with older Win OS, but if it does try running UT with Windows 2000 compatibility to see if that helps.

Latency 120 is IMO too much, 60 is enough. Besides that issue I never experienced any other sound problems with my X-Fi - not under Vista, not with 7.
TBH I have not bothered to mess with EAX effects anyway and limited with standard Galaxy audio driver tweaks.

Updated UTDC should be released in near future that would supposedly fix this issue.

That's the lameness of upgrading.

UT runs fine for me on Vista, for having no graphic enhancements added to my machine.

I'll probably be getting Win7 in a couple years.....let's hope these issues are ironed out by then. If I have to use one of my old Audigy2 cards, then so be it.

SkaarjMaster is right. Windows 7 needs more time. I'm going back to Windows XP 64-bit.

Well, if you have windows 7 professional or higher, you can access Windows XP mode which is just pretty much Windows XP on a virtual machine. You could, maybe, run UT in that.

Actually there is even issue with Unreal2, with the flyby not working working right on win Vista and Windows 7. And no compatibility mode helps that...

Nope, XP mode will not run UT. It just crashes to the desktop. With my particular hardware group, XP Pro 64-bit is what works best. I can even get Full-Scene Anti-Aliasing in UT3. Can't do that in Vista or Windows 7. And Windows 7 doesn't like my 21-inch CRT monitor.

I'll stick with what works for now. Down the road, in a couple of years, when the hardware & software vendors catch up with Windows 7, then I'll make the move to it.

"Windows 7 doesn't like my 21-inch CRT monitor"

Um, yeh, it looks like Windows7 has some bugs that need to be fixed in Win7SP1.

I dropped Creative a few years ago. Their cards were good to start with but things went downhill with the driver software when they released the sound blaster live 5.1 and audigy. It was at the point where the card would perform better with a third party driver. Even if the X-Fi is a nice card, I'd either drop the company or point the finger where the blame belongs which is with the software side of the business.

I can tell you all this much. When people are posting over at the Creative threads that are titled "A retarded ape could make a better driver", then you know there's some unhappy campers.

Windows 7 is not leaps & bounds ahead of XP, at least I couldn't see anything. Maybe a couple of service packs will make it worthwhile to move on to in a couple of years.

We could use an updated sound driver for UT. Galaxy has been good for many years, but it would be nice to have a legit & fully working OpenAL sound driver for UT.

My UT works fine on my Windows 7 x64 install and I have an X-Fi card. Then again, I don't care about EAX :X

In either old XP and W7, I always stick with Galaxy. OpenAL worked like ****, while FMod crashed frequently. I really don't care about having good sounds/music in UT to be honest as I was never a fan of them (unlike U1 and UT3).

FMod was incompatible with some music and sounds, so yeah...it would help if SMirftsch released some new OMP patches.
