Eyes adaption in the dark

I wonder if they is a way to implement this.

It is known, that in the dark the eyes adapt to the darkness. In the game, beeing some time in a pitchblack, or very dark location the gamma value could get higher a bit.
It would light up the dark areas/shadows that you can't light up in current INF by the menu gamma setup.

Looking at massive lightsources (like a window of a house at night) will lower gamma a bit again, but only as long you have the lightsource insight. Looking away will instantly higher the gamma value again. Same with muzzleflashes.

When you instantly get into a light area the screen will get darker and stay for a second untill it brightens up another half of a second (the view gets darker, because you close the eyes a bit and the eyes need a bit time to adapt to the light untill you can open them fully again).

I believe new engines will be able to do amazing things in this area. Especially 64bit rendering will deliver more believable contrast effects.

Farcry already has some (instant) effect when looking into the sun etc.

But for good old 2.9 - hardly gonna happen ...

Dynamic Gamma.

You also must realise that YOU have eyes to, so if the screen goes pitch black for a second YOUR eyes will adjust to the blackness, so when the game goes to normal brightness YOU will be able to see better than what is expected becuase YOUR eyes will be adjusted to bring in the maximum amount of light. It takes a few minutes for your eyes to adjust to a dramatic change in brightness. Hence why its seems very dark in a building you go into after you've spent a few minutes outside on a sunny day.

For current INF definitely not. I used the current INF as example, where the full shadows are massively black and you can't cheat by cranking up the gamma value in the options, the eyes adaption to darkness would give you a good advanatge.

Also this adaption works in really dark areas with only distant and small/weak lightsources, just like in real life.
They is a map in INF (damn forgot how called) with whater and the burning pipe in the main room (where people spawn inside the fire, muahah). It is very dark, but still it has to many lightsources.
But they is a custom map I played in the past (don't know how called), it is nearly pitch black jungle with bunkers, you see nothing and that is the situation where this adaption should work.
Once your eyes are used to the darkness, you would be able to see outlines better, which includes moving soldiers.

Of course YOUR eyes are affected, but onyl a bit, to little to campare to real life. As explained with the nearly pitch black map above. YOUR eyes still wouldn't see much, but a on-screen adaption would let you see more contrast and so the outlines in such a map better.
Notice how the night sky gets grey in contrast to the black trees and buildings when you are long enough in the dark. When you just moved outside you see the sky nearly same black as the trees.

An other example is, playing AA:O on my favorite map, Radio Tower, I'm impresed by the sun effect, but this sun doesn't blind you.
To simulate this better (real-life like), the sun should light your view instantly up (nearly completely white screen, but you still can see) and in less than a second the screen should get darker, with a black fade-in toward the top (the black area at the top simulates the eyelids, and the darker screen simulates the eyelashes that protect the eye).
A white screen doesn't blind YOUR eyes, so it is better to simulate it in the game.

Ok I can make this mod real easy.
Turn off all lights around the computer. Most times (well at least in NA) the games are at night so just shut your blinds and turn off the lights. If you have to move your computer to a dark room (say a closet.) Set the brightness ingame to a reasonable level (usually 5 or 6.) You'll quickly find your monitor will blind you anytime the brightness suddenly changes, creating the exact same effect naturally.

This would be a nice feature but it should be very low on the priority list IMHO.

A no, your own eyes while playing don't simulate the effect.

One of the most significant effects is using your tac light while in the dark to search for something or someone. It TOTALLY ruins your night vision. After turning off the tac light, you have to just sit there for a minute to allow your eyes to readjust so you can see anything. <-- This exact thing has happened to me while playing Airsoft

When the sun effect is simulated in the game, sunglasses will be a good thing .

Ya, or tear-away tints for your tac goggles. But maybe that is getting a little too detailed.

Why not, Im all for it .

What about if they is a dusty map and its wind (or just dust in the air) and when you have no tac-googles (I think you mean those big ones that look like skiing googles) your view can be disturbed, like the screen goes darker often like sand is in the eyes and you try to save your eyes?


I also would like those googles having overlays on the screen, but not like you wear a gas mask blocking much, but just in the screencorners and at the top screen line some greish blurry overlay.
something that is present, but not disturb your view, game feel and weapon view.

Man i like this stuff it adds atmosphere.

Actually tac-goggles do block quite a bit of your view. I often find them a bit annoying when I am tooking down at the mag pouches on my vest during mag collection/organization.

On the other hand, we don't have any peripheral vision to block so the tac-goggle 'effect' should be very slight and unobtrusive.

Good idea about the sand blowing in the eyes, especially while around helicopters.

Thats exactly my thought, it should just give you the feel like you wear the googles.

It would be nice when the overlay would be affected by light (like the rearsight bitmap of the BF2 gun sights). It annoys me having overlays that are bright in a dark area.

Hmm, that could be made for sniper scopes too, looking into the light/sun would make the tunnel-view overlay grey.

Not that I'm opposing your enthusiasm but on this level there are hundreds of things that could theoretically be improved:

You can move faster downhill than uphill, people tend to trip and fall over, they get hickups, fart and sneeze in inappropriate moments... You shiver in pain and frost...

There's so much more, but I would focus on those that add to gameplay and atmosphere.

Stuff like a real good soundsystem (with localization of enemies), Yurchs vectore aiming system (with muscle tremor) and a detailed damage system rank higher on my personal prio-list

Running up a hill in a slower speed allready in the first release would be good.

Trip and fall over is way more complex and harder on animations, so it's up for the future.

Priority list? Realistic movement, weapon handling (with all the positions) and realistic sight aiming is one of the things on top of my list.
Especially because HL2:INF is a scaled down project, it have to enjoy us with what it is about, moving & using the weapon, that's something that should be unscaled.

KW is right. Looking at a computer screen is essentially like looking at a gigantic lightbulb. No matter what color that lightbulb changes, your eyes dont need to adjust, because there's still light coming into them.

Our eyes consist of Rods and Cones. Rods are used to see in darkness (they don't percieve color) and cones see normal vision. When staring at a screen, you brain is using the colored light to make an image. Hence the usage of cones. The adjusting feeling you get is your brain switching from imaging through cones to rods. You would have to turn off your monitor or turn off certain triads on your screen to get this effect naturally.

I agree with Nuke and KW, though. There are definately more core things to finish first.

Don't believe me fine. Go on a dark map, set your gamma to a low level (6 is good) wait 30 sec staring at a dark spot, then toss a FB at your feet. You won't see to well after that. No just using a flashlight won't mess with your eyes, but really bright lights will.
