installing UT under windows XP?

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

Hi all

I decided to to reinstall and play UT again, and then only way i could run it was via "win 95 compatibility"

but ive been told of a opengl renderer and high rs textures.

I am not quite sure on how to install everything, i have read the sticky.

Ive installed UT and the 436 patch along with bonus packs with UT rinning in win95 mode.

I am unsure where to go from here.

please advise

Hi shiwarrior and welcome to BUF :wavey:

Normally you souldn't need any any special tweaks to run UT out of the box under Windows XP.
This thread (http://forums.beyondunreal.com/showthread.php?t=160250) describes how to tweak your UT graphical side and sound to maximum. OpenGL, Direct3D8 and Direct3D9 are updated video renderers for UT that allow you to use high resolution S3TC textures from second UT disc and tweak your overall graphical quality.
Can you please specify what kind of problems you encounter when you try to run UT normally under XP. Including your hardware specs isn't bad either.

Hi

Thanks for the warm welcome

when i first installed it, it was running really slow. (most ppl seem to mention that it ran too fast)

my spec:

Intel dual core E2180
Inno 3D 8800GT OC edition
4Gb RAM

i want to try and increase the res as im stuck at 1280x1024, I have a 22" WS monitor so the native res i use is 1680x1050

also want to improve the GFX

cheers :)

EDIT//

Ive just installed the 2nd CD, and im now running UT without win95 compatibility mode

it still looks the same

First update your UT video renderer, you can download latest and greatest from http://cwdohnal.home.mindspring.com/utglr/
Direct link for Direct3D9 v1.0 http://cwdohnal.home.mindspring.com/utglr/utd3d9r10.zip
Direct link for OpenGL v3.4 http://cwdohnal.home.mindspring.com/utglr/utglr34.zip

Choose one of them (I personally run D3D9, but it's up to you which one you use) and extract the contents into your UnrealTournament\System folder. Then start UT and under Video Preferences click Change button to change your renderer. Direct3D9 renderer isn't visible under avalible renderers until you click Show all and then select it.
After that pump your graphics using the thread link I gave you above. You can manually set your resolution in UnrealTournament.ini file (under System folder). Look for values

FullscreenViewportX=1280
FullscreenViewportY=1024

Set them to match your desired screen resolution.

No, actually you can't install second CD without installing CD1 first because it's where the game itself is.

hey mate,

ill give you a simple tut to make ure UT look @ its best
first download OpenGL 3.4 here ;;
http://cwdohnal.home.mindspring.com/utglr/ ( choose the first download ''utglr34.zip'' 111kb )
Unrar the zip file.
then put that DLL file in your system folder ( c:\unreal tournament\system )
choose to overwrite the old one
- --
then go to your unrealtournament.ini ( c:\unreal tournament\system )
press the following hotkey: CTRL-F ( hotkey for search in a document )
search for ''opengl''
press enter 3 times.
now u see the OPENGL part in your unrealtournament.ini
it should look like this:
[OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice]

under that part paste the following:

and replace everything u already got beneath [OpeGLDrv.OpenGLRederDevice]

[OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice]
TruFormMinVertices=0
TruFormTessellation=3
UseTruForm=False
ZRangeHack=True
AAFilterHint=2
NumAASamples=0
UseAA=True
RequestHighResolutionZ=True
MaskedTextureHack=True
FrameRateLimit=200
SwapInterval=1
UseVertexProgram=False
UseCVA=False
UseMultiDrawArrays=True
TexDXT1ToDXT3=True
DynamicTexIdRecycleLevel=100
CacheStaticMaps=False
UseTexPool=True
UseTexIdPool=True
UseSSE=True
BufferTileQuads=True
BufferClippedActorTris=True
SinglePassDetail=False
SinglePassFog=True
ColorizeDetailTextures=False
DetailClipping=False
UseDetailAlpha=True
DetailMax=2
RefreshRate=0
MaxTMUnits=0
NoFiltering=False
NoMaskedS3TC=False
MaxAnisotropy=16
UseTNT=False
Use16BitTextures=False
UseS3TC=True
UseAlphaPalette=True
AutoGenerateMipmaps=True
UseTrilinear=True
UsePrecache=True
AlwaysMipmap=True
ShareLists=False
UsePalette=True
UseMultiTexture=True
UseBGRATextures=True
UseZTrick=False
MaxLogTextureSize=8
MinLogTextureSize=0
MaxLogVOverU=8
MaxLogUOverV=8
OneXBlending=False
GammaCorrectScreenshots=True
GammaOffsetBlue=0.000000
GammaOffsetGreen=0.000000
GammaOffsetRed=0.000000
GammaOffset=0.000000
LODBias=0.000000
DetailTextures=True
DescFlags=0
Description=lol
HighDetailActors=True
Coronas=True
ShinySurfaces=True
VolumetricLighting=True
SmoothMaskedTextures=False
UseSSE2=True

Save it offcourse ;) then start UT and be amazed o_O
Now your UT renders trough OpenGL3.4 the latest one and the best @ the moment.
Now u can install the High Resolution textures, the high resolution textures only will overwrite the standard textures of the maps. so only Spacenoxx and deck16 and all the standard maps will look better

u will be amazed ;) its a helluva difference between the original UT. and with all this tweaks.

hope u read this,

well its not working for me

after all that, i fired UT up, selected opengl, and the res was on 640x480
so i went to the unrealtournament.ini and changed it to 1680x1050 and 32bit

fired it back up after a reboot, and no difference at all

i must have done something wrong?

Make sure you make your changes under [WinDrv.WindowsClient]
There might be other entries, but that's the correct place.
