Shopping for a new CPU

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

I'm looking to buy a new CPU, but I've run into a problem. My cash is limited. The less I spend, the better off I'll be. So, that being said, I can either dish out $260 for a Pentium-III 800E SLOT-1 256K 100BUS, or I can go with a Pentium-III 700E SLOT-1 256K 100BUS for a meager $200. Do you think the extra 100mHz is worth it, or should I go for the cheaper alternative? I can afford either but, like I said, the less I spend, the better. So, which one do you think I should go with?

P.S. I could also go with a Pentium-III 600E SLOT-1 256K 100BUS fo $165, but 600mHz seems a little slow for my tastes.

Do you have a motherboard that supports those speeds? If you are going to have to buy a new motherboard anyways, I'd go with an Athlon 800 Thunderbird for only $154 (www.pricewatch.com).

Well, the matter is settled. I found a company with a special on CPUs. I'm going to get an Intel Coppermine Pentium-III 700mHz w/ fan for the low low price of $195. It's the exact same proccessor as the Pentium-III 700E SLOT-1 256K 100BUS, but I get it for $5 less and the fan is included. So, it looks like I can say goodbye to my old Pentium-II 350mHz. Now all I need is a GeForce 2 Ultra to replace my TNT2...

$250? For a Geforce 2 Ultra? Last I checked, they were upwards of $500. I suppose I could get a GeForce 2 MX. They're only about $130 but, like the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. The MX is only slightly better than a GeForce 256 (although, even a 256 is better than my 2-year-old TNT2).

There's a grammatical problem going on here; don't you mean which CPUs?

Symmetrical MultiProcessing is where it's at.

Linux with an SMP kernel and a nice dual motherboard would be my gameplan.
