Whenever I play online I'm about a second behind the game when it comes to shooting people, picking up stuff and doors opening for me. I'm on AOL and have a 56k. Please can someone help me so that I can at least have some sort of game without it saying "connection failed" because I'm really bored with playin against bots. Please don't tell me to get a cable or sign on with someone thats not AOL cos I have no money and my dad likes AOL.

PLEASE HELP ME.

Cheers.

best i can tell you is to organize your lists by ping, and hop into the lowest pinging games. there has to be at least a few near you at or below 100, those will give you the best results.

Are you serious?

If you are: there is very little we can do for you. You describe all the things wrong with AOL and 56k, and afaik there are very few options available to improve your line.

Maybe you should wait untill some of the modemers here drop by with info on what modem / isp they use.

Otoh there also are people around who have tweaked their bots to improve the funness of their game, wait for them to arrive too - gl :).

I have telewest and a 56k, and its a blessing to get a game at around 350 ping. Its soared as high as 2000 before so I leave online play to the cable users.

Unless you have that, theres NO point playing on a 56k.

If he's on AOL with a 56k modem, he isn't going to ping any servers at 100. A good AOL connection (oxymoron?) would be lucky to give him a 200 ping. Its just not a good gaming ISP. Period.

Its possible to have an enjoyable game with a 56k modem, but you need a good server and a decent ISP. Factor in the modem itself, and the odds are stacked against you. But there are still some very successful modem users.

Remember hes in England, AOL in england is a lot better than in America. What modem are you on, im betting either you're on a winmodem, or your phone line is sucky. You *may* be able to improve the line by calling BT. BT may be complete bastards when it comes to net useage, but they usually keep the lines ok. As for the modem, if its a winmodem you are screwed. Winmodems suck for gaming, if you have a winmodem I *highly* advise you get a new hardware 56K. An external Diamond Supra Express Pro will do wonders. I used to ping like you before I got a hardware modem, now a sub 150 ping is common for me. Last night I was pinging 130-140 in RA3.

A 56K will always suck due to lack of bandwidth and lag, but it can get you a good enough connection for UT.

[edit]Oh yeah, and a 130 ping is really *the* lowest you will ever get. You wont get lower than that ingame for more than a few seconds.[/edit]

One of my clanmates was on 56k for quite some time. He was first in the Quarterly stats for quite some time when he was on it. His name is Evil LarrE

I also know that a guy named Tommy is on 56K and was first last week (Haven't checked this week).

Another clanmate of mine St. Cadzilla=UTK= is on 56K and his game rocks.

A stable 56K connection is often better than a cable connection that spikes all over the place. Try to figure out where to aim when your ping goes up and down from 60-300. I know that my cable connection was like this, so I got ADSL. :D

56k here
The best I get is a 48k connection (But I AM NOT USING AOL).
I have found servers that I can get under 200 ping. I usually average about 250 to 350 ping. I can handle my own against some of the 60 to 100 pingers that I come across.
Practice practice practice..... learn how far to lead other players. I aim about about 1 to 2 player widths ahead of someone.
Study the other players moves. You will find that the average player is very 1 dimensional, And you can over come or adapt to them.
I would agree that one of the biggest pains is doors. Solution quit playing maps online with doors... ;)

A 56K is good in UT, compared to Q3A at least. In Q3A I'd say the avg ping is about 45-50. I got called a HPB in Q3A yestaday, and I was pinging 130-140!!

A 56K is perfectly playable in some maps and game types. A 56K can cope with 1v1 well, but will lag far behind in FFA DM as it simply cant handle the data flow required for all the people in view. I detest FFA DM because of this lag.

Tuffy:
You are spoiled. A 200 ping is very well playable with some handicaps. It's not the best, but can be done.

You said you don't want the message "connection failed". That happenes when the server is full. Sometimes you see a server with 1-2 slots free, and you still get con failed. Then someone faster than you with connecting

Ping is the time a packet travels from the server and back in ms. One second lag would euqual a 1000 ping. As said try to sort the servers by ping, and take the lowest

I have a Diamond SupraExpress 56i, an ISA hardware modem, and my pings have been cut in half (400 to 200 on average). I also get next to no disconnections and very little PL/Lag associated with my connection. Of course, I still get it if the server lags out.

The Diamond SupraExpress 56e is another good modem. Model # 2730 - PC, v.90, Rockwell chipset, serial connection, ACF2. Same chipset ans the ISA, but as a serial connection. I'm looking at getting one of these as a backup or when I upgrade my mobo and lose the ISA slot.

lol, not with telewest!
I've got a few sneak shots in even with a 900 ping before, but it is no fun to play like that.
