Flash ads and popups every time I click a link.

Okay, this is driving me to the point of insanity. On my Win98 box I get a popup or a flash overlay ad every time I click a hypertext link, all pages. The only thing I can figure is some script installed something. I've run ad-aware (updated) and it isn't pulling up anything. I've trolled through my registry where I think something might be hidden. I can't find anything unusual.

It happens with Mozilla too, except I don't get the flash ads with Mozilla. Sometimes I get a page with an ad, then it forwards to the page I want. The strange thing is the URL displayed shows the page I'm going to. This is annoying me since every ad that pops up has sound, and I'm usually listening to mp3s.

I haven't installed any software or updates. I can't even remotely think of any correlation between this and anything else.

If I go to my Win2K or Linux box I don't get any of this, so therefore it is something on this machine.

Has anyone else run across this yet?

I don't get it, advertisers think they are accomplishing something by pissing me off?

well i can't help you with your problem, but as for your question, remember rule #1 of advertising: bad publicity is better than no publicity.

Hmm, you mean that you click a link and a page opens up, plays an add and then uses the same browser to open up the real thing that you wanted?

If so, I cant really help you, but if the adds are in separate windows...

Get popupkiller and destroy that garbage like the waste of bandwidth that it really is.

Now that's funny! The first thing i get when i go to the page is a POPUP AD!!!!

Well, of course there's a popup ad there, how else are you going to try it out?

Fomhoire, your web proxy settings didn't get changed, did they?

Sounds like some type of program is acting as a web proxy and taking all outgoing http requests and giving you an additional ad in return.

check your program files dir for weird stuff (EZSurf (or something), Casino shit, other things). sort on time and look for the ones which have been installed just prior to the pop up extravaganza.

the web proxy settings didn't get changed. That was one of the first things I checked.

Just thinking about it now, I should run netstat and see if any weird domains show up. I'm at work now, but if I remember and feel like hooking the Win98 computer back up I'll do that.

try uninstalling flash. it wont help with your popups, but defiantly WILL with the invasive sound adds. and macromedia shockwave will play flash cartoons so your not missing anything by not installing flash, except for those damned annoying adds
