From experience...Weapon spammers are so bad that when you start kicking the crud out of them, they usually mutate into talking spam!! /~unreal/ubb/html/wink.gif

Spamming with a delayed-fire weapon is nothing new people... remember the dreaded "Grenade Launcher" in QuakeII? I swear, there were people (many of them in fact) that thier *entire strategy* was to sit in a high place and pump grenade after grenade (after grenade) around corners and into crowded rooms, hoping for a kill.

They did this in CTF (covering the flag with grenades), DM (grenades down the lifts, grenades around the corner, grenades, grenades, grenades!!).

This was especilly heinous (did I spell that right?) in Rocket Arena, where you were in a "Last Man Standing" situation, and the weenie hiding in a tight spot with the GL was really hard to root out. As I recall, there were these sort of discussions in the Q2 forums, just like this one. Ah, the more things change, the more they stay the same...

But, you know... people usually clued in to the "spamming lamer" pretty quick, and figured out an alternate way to get behind the little dweeb, and then it was time for a little manuver I liked to call "Insert Rocket Into The Old Poop Chute". Worked like a charm... =)

Trooper, I want to appologize for getting rambunctious earlier- I guess I just let you push a button, and I usually don't let that happen. I was just a little miffed that you got in MY face when I thought I was trying especially hard to make a point in my earlier post. It seemed like you were making a big generalization (that most people that are playing UT have never really played the first Unreal), one that I didn't, and still don't think is valid. That's all I was trying to say, and things sort of got out of hand.

Hope you accept my appology, and if not, well then we'll just handle it Viking-style. You name the weapons, I'll name the map, and we'll let the Gods sort it out... See you in Valhalla! =)

Later all!

Oi,

The Ripper has skill behind it! Some people like me use the ripper in a much better way. You may have noticed that the Ripper is much harder to take some ones head off than the sniper rifle is. Spammers just fire loads of primary fire into a room and kill people, but rarely take off their heads. The reason for this is because you have to aim a little higher and know the exact spot to crack em. I much prefer this approach with the ripper as it is much more fair and professional.
The secondary fire is also useful for levels like Lava Giant where you can knock people off of the edge!

I wish the ripper explosion did more damage. Its annoying having to bounce someone around 5-8 times with it before they die. Primary fire is fine, Ive gotten/received enough lucky headshots to leave it alone.

Ive perfected the head-shot malarky but i still think the secondary fire is pants for how slow it is.

I think the Ripper is a good attacker's weapon. Go in using a burst on primary to kepp defenders heads down, and use secondary to slam people as you head for the opjective. It's not that good in the open though.

here's somthing im surprised nobody has mentioned yet....the ripper COMBO!! yes, you read that right, there is a ripper combo! you just fire the normal shot, and immediatly press the secondary fire....it spits out a slicing disc that if it doesnt decapitate it hurts quite a bit, and then it rapidly spits out the explosive disc. i have found that if you hit your opponent with both, they are VERY likely to die. its very handy, because you pump out two of the discs at a rapid speed, and most people will think you launched two regular shots, so its a great way to surprize people. and about ST constantly getting killed by the ripper, and having a big problem with "spammers" man....go practice with some bots for a couple days....because if you are constantly getting killed with the ripper you are not very good at this game. and dont get so upset about spammers....its a FRIGGIN GAME!!

Ok, now that the "cat's out of the bag", everyone should know about the Ripper "double-alt. combo".

Hold your alt fire button down and double tap your fire button. A very slow disc will come out and circle your opponent. He/she will become very sleepy and also will begin to fill with self-doubt. They most likely will just feign death and weep for mercy. Most importantly your opponent will not feel as though they were unfairly spammed.

Not many people know about this "undocumented" weapon.

As others have pointed out, all the weapons have their strengths and weaknesses. Each of them, to me, are a tool. And every tool has specific tasks that they are useful or useless for.

The Positive:
-------------
The Ripper makes a good area defense weapon in tight areas, with it's ability to saturate the air with it's spinning blades.

The AltFire is great for using the push from it's blast to push an enemy off a platform or narrow ledge.

The Ripper is a great PsyOp weapon. Psychological Warfare is a very subtle thing in UnrealTournament. Want to make someone think you're somewhere you're not? Send some Ripper blades bouncing down one coridor and run down the other route. Fill an area with blades, and the enemy will momentarilly hesitate giving your buddy a chance to send a package of rockets COD towards him.

The Negative:
-------------

Even a room filled with Ripper blades does not guarentee a frag. Unless you score a headshot, the Ripper takes some time to kill you (much the same as listening to a Barry Manilow CD).

The Ripper is not a very good long range weapon, unless you are aiming into corridors from a distance. Elsewise, avoid it in wide open areas.

The Ripper doesn't have the oh-so-useful AltFire mode that the Razorjack had, which when fired properly and at a certain angle, would follow terrain and sneak up on your enemy.

Conclusion:
------------

The Ripper is a tool, nothing more. It can be abused by newbies. But then again, newbies themselves can be abused by others. The weapon has it's place and time. Use it well.
