I tried out your map, NextoneX! Very well done! Had a ton of fun on it. Allow me to critique?

First the quirks. Small HOM at the top. No big deal. The middle platform seemed to extend a little further than it looked. But know what? I actually liked it like that. It felt like when you got to the edge, you could still hang on with your arm. Pretty cool.

The bot(s) (I played 2vs2 TDM and a 1 on 1 DM) were just fine, used every part of the map, went for the belt and every item. Always moving (bastards;)). They also used the center column's properties like pros. Several times I was fragged by a bot moving up or hanging in there in limbo, which I thought was cool.

The map looked really nice for a 5Cubes map! The center column was pretty gorgeous. Good sound, too. Lighting, fine. Item placement: the belt at the top was pure genius. Basically, the items all fit and were placed well, but clearly, managing the invisibility is a big part of controlling this map.

Gameplay: Fun! I think 5Cubes is all about making a sublime little map that stands on its own merits and doesn't leave people saying "it's good, but imagine if it weren't just 5Cubes what it could have been". Well, your map was just fine as a 5Cubes map.

I really liked the way the center column sometimes obscured the battle on the other side, on the ground and on the middle platform. And the ability to ride the column up and down was great. Liked the weapons being in each of the alcoves and being able to go down or stay up top. Very good.

I tried the map in lo grav, but it's a better map with normal rules. Didn't try it with Rocket Arena, not sure it would be suited to that as perfectly as it was for 1 on 1 or a team 2vs2.

Congratulations!:)

To be more precise, 5 cubical "brushes" are used. The cubes, in the contest, don't need to be equilateral or even equiangular. Just six sides.

A brush can be a positive or a negative. For example, you start with nothingness--actually, it's more like everythingness. The first cube carves out the room. That was a negative brush. Now you have a room full of air surrounded by solid walls. Now you can carve out more with the next cube or you can put some back using a positive cube to create a platform or boxes or whatever.

The challenge of design here is making something that has distinctive and fun gameplay with a very limited pallette. Many normal maps have way more than 5 brushes and some had hundreds used. So it's an interesting contest they have going.

Found it!!

Thanks for all the kind words about my map. The BSP error is a known issue (see readme.txt) as well as being able to "hang" from the side. I think the reason I couldnt get rid of them is because I couldn't intersect the cube that made up the top and the alcoves where the weapon were (or else I would of broken the rules). Also, as far as bot support, I took extra care making sure they would kick a$$, even made jumpspots for the boots, but they won't get the shock rifle, this I beleave is do to the same problem described above. I'm going to try to create a 5 cubes map pack using all the maps being voted on, I'll let ya know when I get it done.

Thanks again for the nice review.

Not sure if everyone's aware, but fileplanet.com has released a 5Cubes map pack, which contains every map that was submitted for the contest. It's a pretty big file, but there's some cool maps in there. I playtested all the CTF maps, and came away with about 5 that I think are worth playing online.
Does anyone know which maps won?
