UT and MacOS X

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

Unfortunately that sounds unlikely...
And since Mac OS X doesn't really support RAVE mode ( i think it uses some sort of Rave2OpenGL wrapper) UT doesn't perform well: rendering is better in software mode :( Consider your fps to be divided by 2 or 3.

Maybe the final version of OS X will correct this and support RAVE with decent performance...
Maybe Epic waits for OS X release date ? (unlikely: Quake3 is already Carbonized, and the G4-optimised version is about to be released)
Well, who knows.

Who knows. Apple is now trying to win back the heart of gamers. Look at the G-Force 3. First demonstrated in a Mac. Maybe it will, but probably it won't. Don't feel bad when Windows XP arrives Unreal Tournament may not run on that either.

UnrealTournament already runs on Windows XP, which uses the NT/2000 kernel at its heart.

One possibility to look into is the fact that OSX runs on a mach *BSD kernel, meaning that most UNIX programs can run natively with a quick recompile. Since Loki's UT client runs on Linux (and FreeBSD with the Linux compatibility libraries), it would seem that their code would be easier to directly port to the strengths of the operating system.

Or maybe not.

To answer my own question, and for any other UT Mac users, westlake (the people who did the Mac port) are considering porting UT to Mac OS X!!
They are waiting for the final release of OS X, and will be doing this to support future games released on OS X which may require the UT engine!!
