What is better for large open areas?

One huge 5120 x 5120 x 5120 area or a series of 512s?

Thanks!

Depends, ... in case of a simple test room you won`t need more than a simple cube. I am not sure what you mean with these 512er cubes... but you would need more polys e.g. for vertex editing, if want to add heights to the terrain. But I nearly think you only are talking about engine performance?

Thanks Creavion

Well, the map I am making is a small series of city blocks. It's a remake of a map I made back in 99. I have the original map but I dont have the texture file. Is there any way to open a map without this? UnrealEd won't let me, unless there is a workaround.

Good geeky stuff here!
Creavion will give you some of the best advice you will find in this forum.

I'd guess your best bet is to make a new fake texture file and try to guess your old texture names :(
If you had a lot of textures in it, it is a long shot, but you may get the feedback you need by switching on the rolling log-file (icon at the bottom of UEd).
This is how I hunt for missing textures and files.
Q: did you ever upload the map anywhere? It may be findable.

Hi Doc!

I'll try the fake texture file tonight. I think I uploaded it and it can be found. The reason why my interest in UT was perked was due to an email from an Italian player who found the level and wanted to know if I had the texture file.

Level was called DM-P0rnville...lol

note - had to change the o to a 0 as to not have the message moderator approved.

I've had a hunt with google, but I think using a real search program like "Coppernic Agent" may yield better results in a more useful format.
The version of the zip file is all over the place, with the "0" being put back to an "o" eg. "DM-Pornville.zip".
Downloaded a couple, but no texture file.
Coppernic can show you the results in size order, so you may find a bigger one you put the textures in.

As long as you can fake the texture names in a remade file, you can open the map. It will just look odd.
Good luck.

i'll give it a shot, but I am completely remaking the level...fort in the middle, with numerous buildings, alleys, and sniper points all around. Various nudes thrown here, there, and everywhere for viewing pleasure as well.
