Okay, I'm not big on game consoles and I know some of you are. My wife wants to buy one. The only console I've really read up on is the X-Box because I thought it was interesting that M$ was making one.

What should we get and why? Is X-Box a mistake? It's mainly for my wife, but I have a feeling I'll end up playing on it quite a bit too. :D

I got a PlayStation 2 a few weeks ago and I am very happy with it. I've been playing some kick ass games and watching DVD movies on it. It has everything I want in a console. I don't think the Xbox will have any staying power....remember what happend to the last all american console, the 3DO!?

3d0 OWNED! heh, the first release of The Need for Speed, which for realism sake hasn't been beat yet by any other nfs's. It was the first total cd based system with onboard mem card :)

But truthfully the x-box is going to have more potential, though the ps2 will yield more titles. And games is what we all want so expect the ps2 to win this battle in the long run.

Well, I'm not disagreeing with the fact that PS2 has really great games, no one can answer this question, seeing as how X-Box hasn't even come out yet. I would wait until it's released. I'm not going to buy anything until 6 months after the X-Box is released just because I want to see how everything pans out. :hmm:

300 bucks, but the same as a ps2... I'm an xbox guy myself but I'm going to try to go at this with both consoles in mind unlike *some* people ;) First off, the ps2 has more adventure/anime based games like the final fantasy series, while the xbox has more "jump right into it" type of games like Amped snowboarding, etc. Just ask her what types of games she would enjoy more, and if she cares about graphics capabilities. I like the types of games that are coming for the box because I'm definitely no anime fan, but that's just me. I also think the xbox will last longer technology wise, because it has HDTV compatibility. But, you have to buy an extra bundle for the xbox to play DVD's (30$, I believe), but it's good because it has it's own TV-style controller that comes with the addon, rather than using the xbox's controller, which you may or may not care about :) The ps2 just comes with it standard. Also, the PS2 does not come with it's own modem, or hard drive, and the Xbox comes with an ethernet port w/broadband capabilities and a 10 gig hard drive for music, etc. But what's pretty cool is that on most games you can download your own music to the hard drive, and replace in game music with your own to suit your needs, I liked that feature personally. Hope that helps you out some :)

All I can say is that I haven't regretted my PS2 and its looking unlikely that I will. Although there are few exclusives, the exclusive XBox games that I find appealing seem a little slim. I won't pass any judgement on the GameCube because I've seen so little output from it.

Reasons why I really like my PS2:
DVD playback out of the box - This was my second (and travel) DVD player for the longest time, and was damn good at it too.
Solid 16:9 support from their games - Almost all of the games that I've bought for it have supported 16:9 displays, and beautifully at that.
Solid releases with a lot of replayability - GT3, SSX, Twisted Metal Black, and not GTA3 seem to be very worthy purchases in my book. Plus, the number of highly acclaimed titles like ICO and Silent Hill 2 are not bad for rental.
Good outlook for the future - Still some nice Namco releases to look forward to, and a little title called Metal Gear or something.

I don't think its fair to compare it to the other boxes, but it hasn't let me down technologically, and I think Sony has proven to have a good head on its shoulders.

If none of what I mentioned seems compelling, wander through the list of games for all three consoles at www.ign.com and look over the movies and previews. Whichever console has the games you want, go for it. They're all powerful, and all seem to be well designed.

Your wife wants a console? cool.

Well your going to have 3 to choose from soon enough.

Despite what anyone says, They're all going to be sucsessful. I wouldn't worry about buying one of the big three and expecting the company to all of a sudden dry up and go away. All of these companies have invested serious cash, and are going to be in for the long haul. The xbox might not get much support in japan which is a large console market, which could possible mean less games (less profit = less product) but since the Xbox is said to have a very simple development kit, that'll probably be counter acted.

I think what you need to consider is:
What do you want from the console? All of the consoles are gonna have some good games, and many of the larger titles will eventually be cross platform (meaning they'll be on all the consoles) but there are some exceptions. Like if your wife is really into Pokemon, Mario, or Zelda.. then your going to be looking for a game cube.

If your looking for a DVD player, then the xbox, and PS2 will be players. The Xbox needs a remote that doesn't come with the system to play DVD's as i'm sure your aware. But as a PS2 owner i can tell you that unless you've got a fairly small living room that the PS2 controler sucks for watching movies, not only is it awkward, but it's also got a cord, which means people are very likely to trip on it... which happens alot in the dark. (in fact i've already had one KIA by someone stubling around in the dark because the controler was left stretched out over the living room.. that was like 35 bucks if i remember.. almost the cost of a game arg.) SO.. In either case, i'd reccomend buying a remote for watching movies..

As for the TYPES of games comming out for systems. At this point nobody can make a system and only cator to one demographic. Even nintendo has a line up of "M" rated games. Most of the women i know love puzzle games though.. and even though you dont hear about them much they do exsist. even for the PS2 there's "super bust a move"... so i imagine that although you wont be hearing much about puzzle games for the Xbox in the "big line up" you can be rest assured that they'll be some snuck in there.

Another thing you might want to consider is that the PS2 is backward compatable. Honestly i don't really play that many PS1 games even though i have an extensive collection. However as i said my GF and her friends are big puzzle gamers, and graphically their ain't that much difference in an 32 bit or 128 bit version of tetris... heh

you can pick up quite alot of older games for the playstation for 5-20 bucks a piece. So they make great stocking stuffers for me. And of course there are a good number of old gems in the PS1 lineup. If your into RPG's for example.. There's a bunch to be enjoyed if you don't mind the 32bit look.

Bottom line: There is no "wrong" system. If your intrested or attracted to the xbox, then buy it. I doubt you'll be disapointed. We've had a PS2 since last Xmas and we've been very satisfied with it.

As shockingly as it may sound, I'm going to have to agree with Predator and Monk (EDIT: and DEFKon). Don't let a bunch of fanboys who try to justify their alliegence by bashing other consoles influence your decision. Make up your own mind. Head over to IGN or GameSpot, look through the selection for each system, tally up the games you want, and whichever console has more of them, that's the one you buy.

Try not to let hardware influence you either. Sure, the Xbox and GameCube may be signifigantly more powerful than the PS2 and Dreamcast (which, I'll admit, isn't a bad buy at around $75), but there's always something "bigger" just over the horizon. After all, in only about 2 year's time, the PS3 will be nearing release, and it'll blow the Xbox and GameCube right out of the water... that is, until something even better comes along. It's the games that matter. Simply put, just as a 2GHz processor and a GeForce 3 won't do you much good if all you intend to do is run Microsoft Word, the fastest console won't offer you much bang for your buck if it doesn't have the games that you want to play.

In the end, no one can tell you which console is best for you. It's something you'll have to decide on your own.

Actually, a lot of my friends have PS2's and they are great. The DVD playback is superb. I guess it all boils down to what games you want to buy, but my opinion is that you will be pleased with either/any new console.

yah, I'll probably get the X-Box for Halo and Dead or Alive 3. But if I get an X-Box and no PS2, I'll be missing out on FFXI, Soul Calibur2, Star Ocean 3(it's not gei, the battle system is very good. Only seconded to Valkyrie Profile imo) and Devil may Cry which I'm dying to try out.(okie maybe MGS2)
I'm not a big fan of Zelda series and capcom supports multi-platform so RE have it's chances on all console. GameCube is out for me.
