I will soon be attending a small LAN party around a freinds house, however most of the games we will be playing I'm not familier with. Anyway what I was wondering is which of the games support dedicated servers and if so is it a download like UT 2k4 or part of the install. Also is it worth running on my server (which is an old duron 1.1 with 256MB of RAM and running XP Pro) or just leaving it to one of the other gaming rigs to run. Anyway here is the list copied directly from the email:

DAWN OF THE MODERN WORLD (1024 REQUIRED SEE ME) YOU MUST LEARN THIS!!!!!!!!!!
DAWN OF WAR
HIDDEN AND DANGEROUS 2 SABER SQUADRON
STAR WARS BATTLEGROUNDS
ARMIES OF EXIGO
STRONGHOLD CRUSADER
BATTLE FOR MIDDLE EARTH
AGE OF MYTHOLOGY
RED ALERT2
EMPIRE EARTH2
ROME TOTALWAR
STARTREK ARMADAS2
WARLORDS BATTLECRY3

Cheers

Strategy gaaaaaaames!

Geo: What are you talking about?! Dawn of War was a spectacular game! Especially for former 40k junkies like me.

Pike: Strategy games dont usually have dedicated servers...that's more of a FPS-type-thing. For strategy games, you just host a game and play (not quite sure about H&D2 though), since the load on the system for hosting is virtually nil.

While most strategy games don't have a dedicated server, I strongly suggest you get whoever has the fastest processor machine to host (unless of course they are hugely lacking on RAM etc.) since the requirements are generally a fair bit more than just a client.

Whats with the '(1024 REQUIRED SEE ME) YOU MUST LEARN THIS!!!!!!!!!!'?

He probably just cut-and-pasted the list from an email he sent out to his friends, and didn't delete that blip.

Dawn of war is ok ....... but limited to units ...... I really loved the vikings expansion to the total war series (mainly because you could play the Welsh ;) ) and I've heared good things about Rome total war. I'm out of touch with strategy gaming as I dont normally have 3-4 hours in one go to play a game. I grew up on RTS but I have had a long break ...... learning all those games by the 26th of Aug is going to be fun...... better get gaming. Damm life is hard ;)

They're coming out with an ImpGuard expo for DoW...can't wait, even though there are mods to get some of the Guard units already. Oh well...I hope they include earthshaker cannons. Also, dont worry, I only tote 384Mb of RAM with my current system. God bless Virtual Memory, eh?

I actually want to get into it.

I suggest Blizzard games. Most notably Starcraft, since that is the end-all standard for Strategy games.

Ground control 2 is one of the best strategy games ive played in ages. it makes an excellent 2 player rts (never played it with more. cant remember if its even possible).

but why oh why are you not going to be playing total annihilation at this lan?

You'd better be playing Total Goddamned Annihilation, don't make me come over there.

(Seriously, the game is of that blissful age before copy protection, real easy to set up on a LAN)
