I downloaded Civ4 via D2D, now D2D requires a different patch from the retail version, so as yet I CANNOT play online... Doesnt that suck??????

Civ4 seems great though :)

I played the Demo. It was fun but it felt very much like Civ3 with a graphics overhaul. Research tech, build wonders, make peace, win. I much preferred Alpha Centauri where peace was not an option because you had psychos like Ming the Merciless who wanted to conquer the world despite your peaceful federation with the other nations. Then he would go off with Santiago, that vile bulldog, and proceed to lay waste to the world while you tried to fend them off with the combined might of your alliance and grav tanks with graviton cannons...

Civilization seems boring in comparison. Also, I could not find a slider to delay tech research. What's the point of researching Samurai when Riflemen are just around the corner. If they slowed the game down so that you could actually Fight with your units for 50 years... Instead of having them made obsolete before your first unit is made. That could be just me though... I focused on research and plowed into the Renaissance when my opponents were still learning to draw maps. Good thing they didn't know how to swim to my island. Mwa ha ha ha. Wow, I went way off track.

Hope you enjoy Civ 4!

Civ4 is pretty cool. Not that much different from Civ3 but why break a winning concept. I agree with you UN17 on that speed issue. The balance between tech research and building units is not perfect atleast on that default speed. The epic speed setting is better but still not slow enough for my taste. There are several mods in the works atm that address these issues though. One big plus for civ4 is the moddability. More or less anything can be tweaked or changed by xml and pyton files. Wish I had more time to play games...as Civ4 takes a lot of time :)

Right at the start of the game there's a setting for 'speed'. Select 'Epic' if you want not as 'fast' as the standard game.

Those are mighty big rocks they're throwing ;)

Besides ... only time you'll see a spearman kill a gunship is if you're fighting them at with a disadvantage (ie : low health & equal or worse odds).

"A spearman killed my gunship."

lol

I really enjoy the Civ games, but that type of stuff always kinda urked me. I always try to justify such things as a victory based on tactics rather than technology. There are a number of real situations where similar stuff has happened. One that jumps to find dealt with early britsh troops (musket era) being wiped out by an equal number of tribal indians ( i think in africa ). Despite the fact that the British had setup a camp and had it fortified they were killed by a group of men with spears and knives in a straight up fight.

How.

The indians attacked at night, and the panicing British tried to lay down surpressive fire into the general direction of the attackers. Unfortunatly thier musket rifles created a smoke screen which combined with the dark completely blinded them. The indians closed the gap where they had the better mele weaponary, and it was a done deal.

but... taking down a chopper with a stick? the only tactic i could think of doing would be to try and put a spear into the tail rotor....

Bombers can be shot down by spearmen in Civilisation 3 I believe.
They can't. Don't know about other Civilization games but in Civ III bombers can only be brought down by surface to air weapons [like the SAM sites or the mobile flak] and interfering fighters.

A heavily fortified spearman can have a strength of around 15, whilst a gunship will only have a strength of 20 or so.
Maybe they fixed it in a later patch (I only played 1.0) but even without any bonuses the spearman still has a what 20% chance to hit? (5 vs 20)

I am a Civ fanatic....i bought the new Civ 4. I havent played it yet but i ran through the manual. It seems that this time around an veteren spearman cant take out my german panzer. From what I understand, the damage is more like a percent basis. The sperman will still hit the tank, but will do much less damage.

perhaps they got weapon upgrades. Like rps. Rocket propelled spears.

Civ4 is extremely fun. It has problems running on my computer though. Gonna reinstall windows quite soon anyway.
