Testing PNGs with alpha transparency

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. We can send codes via email (may be slower) or you can set up any TOTP Authenticator app on your phone (Authy, Google Authenticator, etc) to deliver codes. It is highly recommended that you configure this to keep your account safe.

If you go here http://www.panic.com/audion/faces.php they have little .png images that pop up when you click the thumbnail of each of the skins. Well I posted something about using pngs because of their alpha transparency in 04s thread but all my posts seem to have dissapeared.

Anyway, I'm going to attach one of those images to the forum to illustrate the cool transparency you get with .png images (notice the faded drop shadow).

Lets watch....

it only seems to work on Macs.
(I uploaded them from my G4 and then went over to the PIII running Win98 that's in my office and it didn't work there)

and for some reason all my posting in 04s thread reappeared (I'm one confused little puppy  )

All I know about PNG compression is that it's NOT lossy (like .jpg is)

here's a tech article :)
http://www.libpng.org/pub/png/pngpics.html

It does seem however that software (specificaly www browsers) for Mac and *nix machines seem to be able to handle them better. IE 5 on the Mac is the best at it (I think IE and OutlookExpress on the Mac are a lot better then their windows cousins)

Damn it's just too bad that you guys can't see these on a windows machine.

I wonder if Windows 2000 is able to see them as transparent though (it's my understanding that it basicaly uses png for it's menus and other alpha transparent items).

I think it has more to do with the Mac IE design team who seemed to have kicked their Windows buddies asses, I've said it before but Mac IE and OE are a whole lot better then the Windows version (hell the Mac version of OE is better then the full version of Outlook you have to pay money for on Windows).

One minor bug though with Mac IE, when I look at attached screenshots (not linked images but screenshots posted as an attachment) it screws them up a bit.)

Negative on the transparency and Win2000. Looks the same as Win98.
