Some people (such as I) actually enjoy disabling UT2004 music tracks and playing UT2004 with some music from International artists in the background. I was wondering whether this approach might work better for UT:Codename 'Envy' if they would refer to International artists or groups such as Linkin Park, Maroon 5, or other for guidance.

Match the Music to the Map

Seconded. Keep it UT style please. The last thing UT needs is a crap sountrack (complete with soundtrack CD "availible at all good reatilers now!"). UT99 had a classic sountrack which was modern and still had a ton of atmosphere, that's the way to go.

One of the things I loved about the UT99 sountrack was the fact that you ended up pairing the map with it's music. In UT200x, there are so many maps that the music is used on more than one map, so you don't get that "connection" with the map and it's music. Having a specific music track for each map would be the best possible way to go I think.

Fourth-ed.

Crappy emo rock for pre-pubescent teens...or genuinely atmospheric electronica that adds to the maps. It's not a hard choice.

I don't really mind Linkin Park, but they sure as hell wouldn't be suited to UT, and the same for most bands, especially any songs with any singing in them. I think Epic already has the right idea for the music, and will hopefully keep to the same style of music that we've seen so far.

There are many many genres of music suited to fragging, but UT has always had a techno/cyberpunk feel for me, which would require music to fit. However maybe they should take some influence from the Hackers sound track ;)

/me will still play with music off after listening to a few maps.

I do agree with most replies. Singing ofcourse defn won't go well here. I mean you can't have some artist screaming his lungs out and Gorge screaming "Die B*tch and the sexy commentator moaning "Ultra Kill" all at the same time. Unreal will always go well with Techno / Trance / Cyberpunk music and I think going to the sector that specialises in that department may work well for Epic.

Let me give you an exmaple. Listen to the first quarter of the track "Ghetto Musick" from Outkast and see if it will not go well with a Deathmatch map in UT2K4.

No 'official' artists. (period)
Reason ? Because getting their license would cost too much money that was better spent on something else (like better AI, improved support for custom-content)..

If you want proof how 'real' artists can kill the mood/atmosphere of a game then I'd suggest you listen and compare Burnout 2 (decent music that fit the game) against Burnout 3 (EA craptrack with whiny wannabe boy punkbands that didn't match the game's feel at all).

Heck ... and the #1 reason ?
It's the ff-ing future. There shouldn't be any music/artists that we'd recognize.
I might as well bring my own music-collection instead ..

Burnout 3's soundtrack, though filled with crap suited the game quite well i thoguht. Right pace, sound etc. The game is great though i should add. You don't have to like the music for it to suit the scenario after all.

For UT any song with lyrics wouldn't work well for a start because all the players and anouncers in UT speak and it's at random times, thus the music can't match up to it. Mid chorus you'd have a "Double Kill" etc. As Arsenalvendetta has already said.

The music needs to be music, not a song, there's a difference, also it should be ambient and add to the fighting and the pace not be an advert for a band. ANYWAY and most important of all UT2004 has an in built mp3 player and there's no reason to assume Envy wouldn't so... It'd be your choice what you listen too.

Bunging a soundtrack filled with bands and.. all that gump would only alienate all the players who don't like any one or two of the list of bands and it'd be a waste of cash getting the licenses for that i believe.

ah, but the B2-soundtrack would 'slow down' once you used the boost, something which didn't happen in B3.

Speaking of soundeffects ... it'd be cool if they could do something similar whenever a powerup is used. It was one of the best effects in Burnout.

This is why the tracks in UT2004 are in OGG format as opposed to MP3. OGG is free for all purposes, whereas they'd have to pay the guy that created MP3s if they used them. Check out HL2's legal fine print and you'll see it says something about MP3's being copyrighted and licensed. Dumbasses. :D
