Am I the only one here that doesn't really like 2001? Sure it's technically fantastic and there is a very unique and cool vision of the future, but as a movie it's sort of a dud. Especially the lame-ass turning into the starman ending. Oh look, we inverted the colors of a helicopter shot WOOOOOOO, let's keep going for a few minutes...

I've only seen 2001 once, and it was a great many years ago, but I felt about the same. Completely soured me on Kubrick until I saw Full Metal Jacket and Dr Strangelove some time later.

Le Mans - 8/10

Probalby the second best auto racing movie ever made. Second only to "Grand Prix".

Steve McQueen is at his most restrained playing Michael Dalaney. Seldom has the professional racing drivers' mentality and single mindedness been shown with such clarity. Dalaney has respect for his colleagues, but no warmth towards them. Nothing is allowed to get in the way of the race itself, and importance of winning the race.

There's sub-plot which features a beautiful widow from the previous year's race. There's also a rivalry between Delaney and another driver. But again, the rivalry seems manufacturered as much by the media (shown at their most despicable) rather than any true emotion between the men concerned.

The real stars of Le Mans are the brutal, beautiful sports racing cars of the early 1970s. several meet horrific ends in slow motion crashes that are simultanously beautiful and horrific to watch.

Above all else, from the beginning to the end Le Mans has a surreal quality where speed and concentration result in all other aspects of 'real life' being forgotten.

JCVD-7/10

This is a weird but cleverly put together movie in my opinion. I'm not surprised it raised a few eyebrows.

The camera work is great; really creative in some places. The use of flashback is well done in terms of telling the story.

I suppose you have to give the muscles from Brussels some kudos for trying this one on.

The Day the Earth Stood Still-5/10

This remake is supposed to treat the original movie and update it for today's social framework, at least according to the special features. What could have been a good attempt ended up seeming confused to me and pretty flat and lifeless.

It's hard to beat the original which is a true sci-fi classic.

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans- 6/10

Very stylish with lots of sword gore and some story. Obviously these guys studied about every Nosferatu type movie ever made so they could get the race of vampires just so.

Interesting and watchable if you like lots of long-haired, bug-eyed swordplay.

They tried to tell some sort of story in the first 35 minutes but after that they just said "F@ck it!" and started to show scene after scene of cheesy over the top violence and gore special effects.

It was awesome.

The gauntlet: insane/10

A hard but mediocre cop is assigned to escort a prostitute into custody from Las Vegas to Phoenix, so that she can testify in a mob trial. But a lot of people are literally betting that they won't make it into town alive

Only watched half of it. I kept watching because of the insane amount of bullets fired from dozens of cop rifles. They turned a house into swiss cheese, and a "fortified" bus shared the same fate.
Funny how clint and the girl made it out it (well mostly) in one piece.
Made in 1977.

Harry Potter and the something or other 7/10

At this point in the life of the franchise, muggles need not apply - they simply will not understand what is going on.

If you have been following things then this is an enjoyable enough episode. Things are a bit plot and backstory heavy but that really only reflects the limitations of the book. The action is well-done, especially in the use of aerial shots (the opening fly through London is very well done and the Quidditch match is really convincingly done).

The main characters do develop although I felt the movie was a bit light in its exploration of Draco Malfoy's character.

The climactic events at the end were affecting with nary a dry eye in the house.

10 minutes of IMAX 3D at the start was OK but you won't miss it if there isn't an IMAX near you.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince 7/10
The climactic events at the end were affecting with nary a dry eye in the house.

Yeah, the audience when I saw the film had a similar reaction - it was mostly comprised of very noisy kids who tended to erupt into chatter whenever there weren't any explosions, but for those final scenes you could hear a pin drop.
I think it was someone on these forums (then again, it might not have been) who suggested that the slavish portrayal of the books compromises the quality of the films, and I really do agree. The story about the Half-Blood Prince's potions book was a necessary component of the written series because it explored an important character. But for the films, it just felt like it detracted from the main story.
There have been so many other elements throughout the series which I feel have caused similar problems. Personally, I would have condensed the main plotline into four films, canning almost anything that isn't critical for the development of Harry, Voldemort, Ron and Hermione. You'd end up with much sharper, better films... although less lucrative I suppose, which sadly is the major factor for these big event movies.

Anyway, getting back onto the topic of Half-Blood Prince... the cinematography is amazing. And I'm not saying that as a euphemism for "the film is bad" - every shot is stunningly beautiful, and the immense quality of the production just oozes easily from the screen.
There's a far sprinkling of humour, mostly derived from the romantic entanglements. The central performances are improved - noteably Rupert Grint and to a lesser extent Daniel Radcliffe, who have both clearly benefitted from the other acting gigs they've taken on over the last few years. Emma Watson didn't show much of an improvement, but she's always been charismatic and likeable right from the first film.
Speaking of the first film, I watched Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone the following evening, and the difference is quite remarkable. There's a "softness" about the original film - the light-hearted Home Alone music and a reluctance to dwell on the darker subjects - which is thankfully lacking in the new one. They could have gone a lot darker with Half-Blood Prince, but it's certainly no twinkly fairytale anymore.

But for all the good points, ultimately the need to copy the books as closely as possible lets down the film. It's like porting a game from console to PC - it just doesn't feel right. So the narrative shortcomings mean that it's a highly forgettable film, although reasonably entertaining at the time.
I'll give it 7/10 too.

Simpsons Movie
I enjoyed this film when I first saw it in the cinema, but seeing it again today I have to wonder if the novelty of seeing The Simpsons on the big screen made me easily pleased. Because I actually thought it was quite poor this time around - essentially a long episode of the show, with about as many jokes as you'd get in a standard-length episode (and of a similar quality). It also felt very random and unresolved. 6/10

South Park: Bigger, Longer And Uncut
For contrast with the Simpsons, I decided to watch the South Park movie this evening. And what a difference.
This film had genuinely epic ambitions - it felt like it was made because the creators had a big idea which could only be properly explored at feature-length, rather than just making a movie for the sake of it. It maintained a high level of humour throughout, most of which was derived from the story itself rather than being tossed in randomly. It was highly imaginative and had a message to convey. Finally, I actually really enjoyed all the songs (the film is presented as a musical) - it reminded me of Trey Parker's older and considerably less ambitious film Cannibal: The Musical, which was one of my favourite films as a youngster.
Really, really loved this film. I'm a fan of all Parker's movies, but this has to be the best by a fair margin. 9/10

Pineapple Express 8/10

Pretty good movie and some really good laugh out loud moments.

- The fight at Red's house was hysterical
- Saul getting hit by the cop car, fell on to the floor during the scene. Had to watch it again!
- The finale was just pure mayhem
- Red never dies! The dude got shot three times and escaped a burning barn!

There are many things wrong with this movie but the biggest flaw, in my opinion, is that they changed the problem (human aggression -> humans don't behave environment-friendly enough) but kept the solution and it just doesn't add up.

I completely agree. I had written something similar in my original post and then removed it exactly because I thought readers might think of it as a euphemism. The look of the movie is very impressive.
reasonably entertaining at the time.
And who can complain about that? :)

It's been a long time I've laughed so hard with a movie.

But damn, you sure need guts to do the stuff Sacha Baron Cohen did for that movie. I was surprised +12 year olds here are allowed to see this movie.
