Heyt there I have been looking into getting a cable modem for like a couple of months now. I wanted to know how they usually performed. My main concern with them is that I've heard some people complaining about getting slower speeds with bandwidth sharing. Who here owns a cable modem and what service do you use? I live in NY and the only service we got in my area is Optimum Online cable internet service. I've heard good things about them but I just don't want to have to pay for all the equipment and be unsatisfied. I would look into DSL but right now its WAY too expensive in my area. Any thoughts?

Go with the cable until the DSL prices come down. I get great overall net performance on RoadRunner and can usually get pretty good pings on most servers. Of course that all depends on how many hops to the server, etc.

I have cable, and concerning my hobby using computers, I consider it the single most important up-grade Ive made.
I generally can find many servers where I have a 140 ping or less.

Cable:

- @home has a 128kbit upload cap.
- I've heard nothing but good things about Roadrunner.
- On most systems, anyone on your local wire can see your packets.
- More users on your wire, less bandwidth for you.

DSL:

- Price is all over the map.
- Technology is very new. When it works, it's great. When it doesn't you cry.
- Still difficult to get installed properly.
- Your bandwidth is your bandwidth - you don't share it.
- People on your subnet can't see your packets (unless they're broadast packets).

---

I use DSL. When it works, it is absolutely great. When it goes down, I turn four shades of red and then go play single player HL or Unreal to calm down. Then again, cable's not 100% reliable, either.

Just my $0.02

not sure about your area but in mine cable is only like $5 more than 56k dialup access. it is absolutely indespensable to the hardcore (or even casual)gamer to get a high speed connection (if its available, and it is to you). all those lag problems you said u had will disapear into thin air.

of course in some cities which have a very saturated network, you could see performance degradation during internet peak hours. but thats not the cable providers fault unlike what some people will lead you to beleive. its all about Routers outside your isp's network which are not under their control.

even at absolute rock bottom worst conditions cable or dsl is a million times better than dialup. once you see how sweet a high speed connection is youll wonder how you ever lived without one.

the day i got cable is the day i actually started enjoying playing. i mean i was just having too much fun cxuz for once i could move and do what i wanted without monster lag. from one gamer to another, you owe yourself to get it. trust me.

I live in Atlanta and have cable. Cable is great. Here's is $39.00 per month, free instillation, no equipement cost, free service (once I had to get another cable modem and it was free), and provides the ISP. I dropped Mindspring and CompuServe which caused the monthly fee to break even. On Mediaone Roadrunner I've gotten d/l rates as high as 3.4Meg (that's early in the morning). At Internet peek times the network can really slow down.
Final advice, get cable or adsl. It's well worth it.

Hi,

Everything the people up above said is true.
You won't know how you lived without it once you get on cable.
Me?
I have Roadrunner from Media here in South Florida. The prices are, $49 per month if you have cable tv, $59 if you don't, and $99 if you want 1500k both ways. This is what I have, otherwise you get 300k upload speed. This is still plenty fast enough to host a dedicated server. I've been hosting a dedicated UT server and the upload and download strem is about 100k/sec with 6 people on there.
ADSL cost me $59 per month from Bellsouth and their speed is 1200k download and 300k upload, there is no way to increase the upload speed.
Why do I have both?
I had one way cable first, then went to ADSL, then two way Roadrunner came out, so I kept them both knowing I would have two computers soon.
One computer is the game server using ADSL, the other hosts an ftp and is the machine I use to play online.
You win alot more online games with the lower ping. I still get beat because some HPBs are very good, but I always end up in the top of the pack. So Ping means alot in the online games.
Pay the extra money and get the cable. Just not having to dial in is worth it. Imagine, you turn on your computer, and you're already on the net.

Hey Slaughter, are you in South Florida or Jacksonville?
Try my server sometime, its called Salley's Server, it shows up in the UT listing from the game.

Talk to you later.
Robert.

Thanks for the info guys!! Well the good news is I found a REALLY good cable internet ISP in my area for just 30 bucks a month. I think I will definetly be getting this soon. I AM SOOOOOO SICK OF DIAL-UP!! Sometime by the end of the year I will be surfing the web with a cable modem.

It's definitely the way to go. You really have nothing to lose if you're in an area with the service. At it's slowest, my d/l speeds are double my best with dial-up. At it's best it's 400x's as fast. Gameplay will be smoother on most servers, but not all. My average ping according to ngStats is in the mid-100's but I can get as low as 50's.

I have a 56K but from my experience so far I have noticed that the people with the cable-like pings (100-175) have a definite advantage. I'm one of those players that will check someones ping when they do something that really impresses me or kills me time and time again and rarely do they ever have a ping over 200. So I would say that anything that would give you those type of pings would certainly help. Of course skill helps too.

Anyway as soon as I do I am coming on-line to use those skills that I have been accumulating in the single player game to give out some *** whoopin! I tried UT over a freind house on Cable and it was SERIOUSLY SMOOTH! I know now that I must get this!

Go with the cable man...you wont regret it...like stated previously ANYTHING is better than a dial up. If you get it and want to speed things up I have a registry patch that I ran across that will speed things up even more. BTW I am on Roadrunner...no complaints as of yet. Security will be an issue though...not that it wasn't just as much of one with dial up...but now you will be on tons more /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif check out this site http://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 its a must for everyone!!

I have tried BOTH Cable modem and DSL. Now, granted, DSL is more expensive, you still have allocated bandwidth and it's not all over the place like Cable modem is. Also, depending on whether not the cable line is over subscribed, you may experience line degradation, transfer degradation, and packet loss. However, it truly is up to you. Try both...see which one you prefer. I personally prefer DSL for the simple fact that I know exactly what I am going to be able to transfer at. =) It's quite impressive if you ask me.

Yes.

The only negative I could contribite to this worthwhile post, is that for some peculiar reason, packet loss will make itself a nuisance when playing Unreal, I don't thnk it's as noticeable on UT...... when you as an LPB cable user play against an HPB 56kb..
"BE PERPARED FOR SOME NASTY SURPRISES" and quirky gameplay.

Balancing that one major negative against all the positives..you will be better off on cable or ASDL, Cable is superior to ASDL.

When I say Cable is superior to ASDL, I mean that generally cable transfer speeds are much, much faster, but for gameplay purposes in UT/Unreal..it's possible that ASDL is more predictable and less unstable than Cable, thus you may enjoy better gameplay and less P/L.

Cable has a tendency for incredible PING SPIKES and P/L interference..so much so that in some cases you cannot play HPB and win.

If you can get ASDL, I would try yhat first for gmeplay, if you want to have the fastest possible download/upload speeds for surfing web..go with cable.

I highly recommend DSL. I experience lower pings and smoother gameplay than my friends with cable modems. If I host a game, the players with DSL usually get a ping of 50-70 ms. The cable people get 130-200ms. The price gap is narrowing as well. Right now with GTE they are offereing free installation. It runs me 30$ a month more on my phone bill, but the expense is well worth it. My multiplayer frags have gone way up since getting DSL /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

Yes you can get higher bandwidth with cable on occassion, but DSL has a dedicated, low latency pipe. So no matter what your neighbors are downloading, DSL will give you a nice low, stable ping where Cable can be chaotic (again, based on what your neighbors are doing).

I've had both and with cable I would get 50-800 pings on the same server on different days because it's not dedicated. If you're getting a digital connect for gaming reasons, go with DSL. Otherwise, surf your heart out with Cable. BTW, DSL is cheaper in my area (Austin, TX) so the price is relative.
