Well this isnt quite off topic so DONT MOVE IT ROOSTER! /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif. This is just an idea for the ultimate game. A game based on many things, two of the main ones being Unreal Tournament and Ultima Online. Yep you can see where this is heading cant you.

Basicly use an Unreal Tournament and Quake slant on the Ultima Online theme. A HUGE universe to explore, consisting of several planets. Each planet has its own citys and landscape and its own shops, buildings and commerce. Instead of clans there could be governments and pirates, companys and armys, formed by groups of players. There could be cars and trains and all sorts for transport (which could be driven). And if the idea of joining an organisation isnt for you, just be a freelance, and do your own thing.

People could buy buildings, spaceships and land, even planets, upgrade weapons and get more ammo. There could be contract killings, hired guards, you name it. Money would be earned by jobs, looting and bountey on pirates. Trading would form an important part. There would be no need for an experience system, as it would be YOUR skills than define your character. If your character dies, you respawn on another planet some where, which would be chosen by you, though restrictions would stop you spawning in certain places, (ie. enemy planets or planets the other side of the galaxy)

To spice things up even more, space travel between planets would be possible, either through huge transport ships, or by flying your own fighter craft. Alliances could form, planets formed under one leader ship, and HUGE battles fought numbering hundreds or even thousands of players. Imagine a planetary attack, with a thousand strong force raiding a city. Planets could be taken over, and empires formed by powerful fractions. (Imagine C1 as "the empire" and $GB$ as the rebels /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif) Different planets would have different enviroments such as desert and artic, all with different economys (defined by who ever rules the planet). Hell you could even toss in an alien nation as well.

A full and very large inventory system could be used to include all sorts of items from guns to equipment. You could enter conversation with close players, or communicate with friends over a com link across larger distances. Basicly at the end of it all, you have a fully populated world of individualy thinking people, all with different interests and alliances. A fully alive world.

This is the ultimate game, this trully would be unreal.

PS. This idea was brought to you by a very bored and internet deprived mind /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif Yes I know this game would be almost impossible to do, even in the future but hey, a guy can hope cant he /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

Not only i need a whole linux-cluster to run this game, but a direct connection to the internetbackbone of GTS fiberoptic network will be needed too /~unreal/ubb/html/wink.gif

But that are details /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

I think it would be possible to do, and play...even on a modest rig.

You could layer the game..i.e empire building using the ultima engine, then when things get nasty the unreal engine kicks in for the kick *** action.

Merging the two would be quite easy. But the real question is who would have the time to 'play' another whole life? /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

I struggle with my real life and a few hours of UT on-line...another whole on-line universe? Hmmm, I'd ratehr get addicted to crack. /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

(Thats a ref to the addictive nature of the net...Im not really a drugy. /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif Just wanted to point that out)

Excellent idea LordKhaine! If this game was created I'd never leave the house again! I like what you said about being able to use vehicles. That would be really good for battles as you could fly some dropships into the enemy base and send the troops out on a massacre and then fly off again. More ppl would play this kind of game. Flight/space sim fans could fly the spaceships and stuff like that while UT players would play the troops who wopuld go into battle. Having loads of different planets would require one kick @ss engine (and PC) to run the game though. Would u be able to take on "normal careers as well though. It would be kind of fun to be doing something normal like working in a shop or something and then when u close up running out and picking off some important person for a syndicate or other sinister organisation. Would the game be based on the Unreal universe becasue id it was u could have the Skaarj in it! It would be good to go one of them for a while. When these huge space battles take place, what sort of viewpoint would u use. I'm assuming the game would take place with a first person view. I think it would be neat to use a Homeworld style view to watch the huge space battles but u could give command over to someone else on the ship and do something else aboard the ship (or board an enemy ship even). With this type of game there probably wouldn't be much of a need for the real world. U would need free internet access though, unless your rich. What kind of weapons would your character use? It would be nice to use grenades again as that wasn't in UT although that wasn't really suited to the type of game UT is. Would this game ever end though? I suppose it could if your organisation managed to take control of the whole gaming universe and all other races and organisations became your slaves! For aliens, I could imagine some sort of massive battle like in Starship Troopers as that would look very nice. IT would seem like a real war with aliens and soldiers running about everywhere shooting each other. This game could easily ned up being a mix of every game genre ever made /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif. U should try and persuade a company to pick this idea up as it is very good. Hmm, I'm trying to go for my longest post ever (without spamming /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif) but I don't know how long this one is. What do u think?

Yeah sounds like im not the only one who would really like a game like this. Just remeber that you wouldnt need to run the whole universe at once, you could just have different levels that load up like in Half life as you move from area to area. And as for space battles, a homeworld view would be good, but i was thinking more along the lines of a wing commander point of view for fighters. And larger ships could be controled from a Doom perspective, with indivdual people manning guns, and preparing boarding actions against other ships, and generally running around fixing and controling stuff.

In the citys there could be trains and cars, shops of all sorts. Im sure some people would be interested in having normal jobs as well, though I'd personally either start a government, or end up starting an assassins guild type thing /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif. I mean, people in Ultima Online do stuff like fishing or baking online for hours, you could just get them in to fill in the "normal" population /~unreal/ubb/html/wink.gif. Remember that most people wouldnt be building empires, but working for other people making empires. Other wise you'd just get about 14,000 odd people each trying to make an army /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif. If this ever was made, the first few months would be utter chaos as everyone finds their position in life.

When you want to leave the game you could just go into some safe house where you would be safe till you started playing again. Through dont count on the place being the same when you get out /~unreal/ubb/html/wink.gif. I wouldnt spend my whole life playing a game like this if it were out, I'd play it the same amount as i play UT now. You shouldnt need to play that long at all as long as there are always eneugh people playing at once. There could be a whole host of things to buy, even huge bits of armour like Mech suits. (though the suits would be very rare, only available to armys, governments and very, very rich people /~unreal/ubb/html/wink.gif)

Just imagine, a whole fleet of drop ships flying down onto a planet to drop off a 1000 strong attack force. That would be the single most impressive moment I would ever have witnessed on the PC, EVER. You would just be blown away by the sight of it, and then blown away for real by some one /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif. Personally I wouldnt want to be in the pilots shoes if he crashes the space ship /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif. Forget AS-Overlord with about 8 people on each side, you'd have thousands on each side, all lead by hundreds of squad leaders, lead by captains and such like. You could have artillary bombardments to support attacks and elite squads on commando missions to take out nuclear reactors, defense lasers, dams and such like. Just imagine that the fate of thousands of attacking troops could rest on just one squad of commandos taking out an objective. Oh and if one organisation ever takes over the whole system of planets, (which i would doubt would ever happen), then the whole world could start again, from scratch.

And if that doesnt seem like your thing, just go solo and become a hired guard, a thief or a hit man. Form a small group of pirates and start raiding passers by and space ships. Hell even buy your own house and become a law abiding citison, (thats if the local enviroment even has a police force /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif). I for one would have a great time as a cop, though I wouldnt care to much for goverment policys, (Me a crooked cop I hear you say, never /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif).

One thing I think would be good would be the fact that at different times, people from different countrys would be playing. And as such the general feel would change at different times. Alougth the world would be a lot emptyier when the US go to bed, leaving us Euros to take our pick /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

And as for suggesting this idea to a company to try and do, I think most companys would run a mile at the thought of this idea /~unreal/ubb/html/frown.gif. Maybe in a few years machines and internet connections would be able to cope with such a game, but for now this idea is just pure fantasy, though i very nice sounding fantasy at that /~unreal/ubb/html/biggrin.gif

I could definatly imagine that...

Seriously though, I think a game like that would be unbelievable! I think games are starting down that road already, with more team-based games ariving (TF2 springs to mind). As the great man said: "I have a dream" /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

I think this game is already in the works. Evil_Beaver mentioned it...Dark Sector, from Digital Extremes, using the UT engine(heavily modified). At least, I think that's the one.

And yes...it would rock...a persistant RPG universe from a first person perspective using an awsome UT like engine...woo hoo!

Isn't this what Everquest is supposed to be? I've never played Everquest, just read Jeff K's articles about it /~unreal/ubb/html/wink.gif But I thought that Everquest was the persistent multiplayer RPG thingy. I don't know, if it ain't UT, don't ask me.

I actualy tried 10six a while back it was in open beta. I have to say that unless they made drastic changes to the game since then it's not going to be very good.
I have often wondered why somebody didn't release more of an action oriented online game. It'd be way more fun than clikcing on a monster over and over again pretending all those clicks make a difference. /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif
