Epic's Cliff Bleszinski has updated his developer blog on 1UP.com with some thoughts on the past and future of gaming.

Ever notice how horror movies that were considered scary in the 50s are seldom as frightening now? Audiences grow. And it's important for the products to grow right along with them otherwise a medium will ultimately stagnate.

So thanks for waiting. Because I have seen the future - the next generation of consoles. I have had more than a taste of what true next generation gaming is going to have to offer and I'm here to tell you -

You're in for something special.

It a shame he couldn't say what game will give us something special, because so far from the next gen line up there really isn't anything there that I'd say puts it a step above what we have now(in terms of gameplay, next gen graphics win of course)

I think he's referring to more mature content (by which I'm not referring to pornography), so sophistication of graphics is unlikely to be the factor.

He's absolutely right, though I haven't seen any indication that the industry is heading that way.

I have seen the future - a nice spaghetti dinner.

The above doesn't mean the only thing in the future is my spaghetti dinner, and similarly I don't think CliffyB didn't mean to say the only thing is consoles, he seems quite happy with the positive aspects of the PC world as well.
(I added the "aspects", because they really are pretty different.)
That's my interpretation anyway. :)

"Bullocks to all."???
