Unreal Texture UT site and S3TC releases

  • Two Factor Authentication is now available on BeyondUnreal Forums. To configure it, visit your Profile and look for the "Two Step Verification" option on the left side. Well i am glad you all like the textures :)

Someone did pointed me about the floating isles in the JWSky package. I made those long time ago for Unreal but always thought they looked horrible. For Unreal however i left those textures in because everybody asked so.


I wanted to take those out for UT, but forgot :( Which means that they are now also sitting in the UT package. If needed, and no-one likes those (which i fully can understand :rolleyes: ) I will take those out in a next update.

Those isle look really cool with the original textures, and they look very simple. But i never was able to pull a decent looking cool high resolution out of those. You can blame that on my still limited drawing techniques. I always had problems with rockfaces.


In any case if no-one likes them i will take them out in a next update.

The Sky Island texture which came before this latter one was actually really good.

Ah lol


Innitially i made tried to draw them by hand, which didnt work for me. Than i had the idea to make them in Bryce which is a 3D program for landscapes. I was able to make a very good match as far as the shapes, but the surface did lack any detail.


After releasing those, i decided they look still horrible, so i bumpmapped them for the next release, which made them even look more horrible lol. After that, each 6 months now for the last 3 years i tried again from scratch, and again, and again, but i am unable to create those friggen things. And eventually i will, i am getting better and better, but still.

And even sadly they lack the citys that are on top of them, but as said, if you guys are happy with the Beta version, its ok with me, after all its the eye of the beholder right ?

Actually, in my opinion the textures that are the most worth to be S3TCed are skyboxes. Basically because they are the most stretched. Those islands originally looked horribly as well :\
So it doesn't change anything if you download the texture packages one by one or if you use that link there? In some cases, it could be even possible to use a mix of high and low end S3TCs.

yeah you can use any mix you want, you can have the one package normal, another High End S3TC and another in Low End S3TC. They all contain the same textures, are netcompatible. I would only disadvise using the textures from the 2nd CD from now on.


And to point this out clearly, if you notice bad drops in your framerates with your card, you might wanna switch to the Low End textures, or make a mix. Have the packages you concider important to you, in High End, and the less important to you, in Low End.

And you can choose to download the (large)Masterfiles, or choose the single downloads if that works better for you.

Edit, still working on the skating textures issue. It seems to be map dependant. Will keep testing

So far, so good here. I haven't seen any player skating issues when connecting to my LAN server with any maps.

I also did not run the S3 texture fix. I'm using the High end packages.

CTF-LavaGiant looks like a whole new map, even the stars in the sky look more vibrant.

You've done a terrific job, Diehard. Keep 'em coming if you can find the time.

I did a clean install of UT on Linux from UA. Copied over the S3TC textures without any modification and then went online. I can report that no problems were encountered in Deck-16 (other than getting gubbed:)).

Not Desk-16 but looking mighty fine...

Yeah i was able to do alot of CTF textures, since those textures always use other textures as a base. And all textures i had in S3TC format, those can pretty easelly turned into CTF textures :)

Yep, CTF has a high count of finished S3TC textures :)

Hm, what package contains CTF-Face Earth textures, because I'm getting low-res version of that after installing new textures?

Any idea why I'm getting low Earth texture while everything else is hi-res? :hmm:

For comparison below is earth using Epic S3TC textures from 2nd CD..

Do you have UTTech1.utx installed ?

Yes, UTtech1.utx 135 MB.
Can you take some shots from Face with UTRP installed..?

EDIT: I just replaced UT1Tech.utx with Epic S3TC version and earth is still low res so I think earth texture is not in UT1Tech.utx package.
