somewhere; sometime?
The brief, in case you've been living under a rock.
There's some graphic images near the bottom. State police have been given the authority to use live fire to disperse demonstrations.

So like... what does everybody think about what's going on in Iran?
It's getting pretty intense. Honestly, who elects a guy who doesn't believe the holocaust happened? It's the year 2009 ffs.

I say we bombard them with megatons of porn leaflets and pics of hot chicks. Once they get the point the whole country will shut down and they'll kick that yahoo out on his ass.

It's not exactly as if he ran on that platform. I have a feeling the people of Iran are more concerned with the economic situation at home (which is very bad right now, due to the rapid decline of the oil price) and the younger generation - to a certain extent - with the level of authoritarianism. The latter issue was brought to immediate attention through the suspected manipulation of the vote, which is what sparked off these mass demonstrations. Ayatollah Khamenei's move to let the Guardian Council review the vote will ease the pressure somewhat, but I suspect it might pick up again once they release their findings - which will probably be that everything was in order.

Gonna guess most people didn't get the song reference in the title :(

I do wonder if there is some dictator handbook these guys use. They just follow the same steps all the time. Ban protesting (unless they're supporting you), ban foreign media (they're spreading lies!), use state media to enforce governments view (everything is fine, it's just a few unhappy thugs trying to spoil things!), use of secret police to crack down violently on anything they can get away with etc etc...

I'm not really sure what to think of this.

The election results say Ahmedinejad won the election. Mousavi's supporters turn out in droves to support the election. Seemingly, many of them are attempting to demonstrate peacefully, while others are clearly engaging in violence, though all are apparently in defiance of an official ban on demonstration if I understand this correctly. Now, I don't know if the violence is in reaction to use of force on gathered demonstrators or if they were the instigators. I do think that it's pretty clear this is a highly contested election, and it seems people are pretty pissed off about how things are going in their country. However, in groups as large as I see in those pictures, things can get out of control very quickly. The fact that there are also crowds of people in support of Ahmedinejad leads me to feel that resorting to violence is really just undermining the system. The past few elections in the United States have been fairly polarized, too, and we didn't start rioting in the streets.

But, the fact that the government has authorized the use of lethal force against its own people has definitely led me to believe that Mousavi's supporters are in the right. Couple this with the fact that the Iranian government is apparently banning outside journalists from reporting on the situation also casts their government's credibility into doubt.

The thing that confuses me about this whole story is how many people (particularly on the internet) have been championing the cause like they think something is actually going to come from it. It's wonderful that people there are finally standing up, but don't kid yourselves this isn't going to end well.

He actually does believe in Holocaust, but denies it per his political allegiance (anti-israel).

Arguably so, because most anti-israel see Holocaust as Israel's "pillow of pity" handed down to them by the powers of US and UN.

Yeah, God forbid that someone stands up for what they believe in.

Hey I already said that it's good that people are standing up for what they believe in. I just disagree with the people out there that think this is the moment when the regime crumbles. The last thing I want to see is another Tienanmen square.

Nobody ever mentioned invading Iran. Besides there's a few things you have to keep in mind when talking about an internal revolution. First of all the rebellion would probably be crushed. Second the guy they are supporting isn't all that great anyways.

Not that I'm an expert on such things, but it seems to me that once you start down that path, one thing pretty much naturally leads to another. Oppression and violence justifies itself with more oppression and violence.

Last week Obama brags about his Cairo speech. Now after ppl are in the streets demanding democracy, and blood has been spilled, he says we can't "meddle" in their affairs. What a ****ing bitch and political coward. ANY president, up until now, would have given a speech promoting their liberty. How historic...

Dude, we don't even have liberty here. Quit whining. Protesting is now considered unpatriotic and low-level terrorism.

Nobody ever mentioned invading Iran.
I will mention in. In fact, I will declare it.

We should invade Iran.

Regime change is the Web 2.0 of world politics. Most of the regime I don't care about; it can stay they same. But in a country where ~70% of the people are under 30, their women need to start wearing revealing clothing. From what I've seen their women are sexy.

That's probably the reasoning behind the clothes they wear -- they don't want a bunch of white tourists coming to bone their hot women.
