Maps such as CTF-Face, CTF-Lavagiant, Deck16 etc. Please don't turn this into a 'Face sucks! No it doesn't!' thread.

due to all the changes in the engine and the gametypes the maps of UT2 will surely be very different from th UT ones.
You could do another map using the same theme and textures but UT2 has the potential to make far greater maps (in size,potential,etc...)
remember:you spawn with all weapons.And that only should make a GREAT difference in map architecture.

probably not, since UT2's maps seems to be big, open areas and not like the standard Fractal-like maps from UT

I'm willing to be anyone that you will immediately see Face and LavaGiant conversions. I don't mind that really, it would be cool to see an updated version of a familiar map. I'm just looking forward to seeing something new from them.

Actually, I have my heart set on making a deck16 map for UT2 when it comes out :)

I'm not a rubbish mapper, I just haven't released anything yet but something is on the horizon. As you may soon find out.

Maps that Epic made for U1 almost 100% reverted into UT, so I don't see why they wouldn't keep that trend.

Because the rendering engine has been gutted. Unreal and UT shared so much of the core that it was possible.

If I'm not mistaken, Legend may have even pulled the software renderer out to help speed things up.

Im sure it will not have a software renderer. Thats one reason Q3A pushed a much better fps, it was all hardware optimised.

(tho you *could* actually turn software mode back on in Q3A via the cfg file, but its sooooooo bad its not worth it :))

Unreal and UT had pretty much exactly the same engine, and had about the same physics, and most of the weapons were the same. UT was even made as an Unreal-addon from the start. That's why keeping a few maps was acceptable. But Unreal2 is so completely different it would make no sense at all to see deck16 in the middle of everything.

1) Maps like Face are alreay overplayed ;)
2) I think that the new engine will make it hard to convert them
3) They wouldn't be optimized for the new non-pickup weapon system. (btw this sucks, too.)

No weapon pickups? That sucks half the fun out of it, you'd get something-spammers popping up everywhere cos the don't have to actually go and get the wepaon to start with!

I'd love to see Phobos and Morpheus redone; maybe an update to some of the better custom CTF maps. I don't like any of the stock UT CTF maps as much as a lot of custom ones out there.....

No matter how U2 and UT2 will turn out, Im quite sure it will be fun to play Face, Deck16, whatever *for old times sake*

I have always been a sucker for LMS just because of the fact that you didnt have to spend time getting decent weapons. Shame it seemed to attract llamas though. Anyway.... spawning with weapons = ok in my book :tup: :)

Two maps I never want to see again are Face and Deck16. Anything else is fine, as long as I get something new too

But knowing the community, some llama mapper, will immediatly make a ripoff of this 2 most sucky never-should-have-been released maps. Sad. :( I count on the reasonable server admins, and hope they won't be in rotation much

If Digital Extremes doesn't convert the maps, some newbie mapper will. At least this way we get professional work.

I'm all for map conversions as long as they add to the original without destroying what made the predecessor fun.

not really, LMS works great in UT, no L.A.M.E. item/weapon camping, spawnkilling and spawnraping - shows the real skilz, balanced and fair gameplay

Phobos is probably my most favorite. Deck is a good one also.

What Im really looking forward to is the ability to go outside into the terrain and back into the building indoors. Of course Phobos would not apply to the above being that its a Space Station.

No doubt someone, somewhere will convert the UT maps to UT2. I wouldn't mind seeing maps such as Deck, Phobos and November being converted.

Actually, what would be better is if, instead of straight conversions, the UT maps were expanded for UT2. For example, UT2 will have huge terrain areas and vehicles, so November][ could have a sub that's able to carry players underwater to the other base and can launch torpedoes.

Phobos][ could see you fighting over two space stations orbiting around Mars with a transporter linking them together. It'd have a great wide open feel. (Imagine standing on the edge of one of the stations and watching the fighting on the other).

Then again, I can also see a "UT Classic Maps" pack coming out with straight conversions. Ah well... :)

I hope it doesnt, it would be better if DE spent their time coming up with new content and let the community do rehashes. Or they could releasesomething like "The Nostalgia Pack" after release.

The Assault maps and Capture the Flag maps should be converted and downloadable. Big or small, these maps will not take any effect in gameplay. Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch will still lead to heavy campers on big maps.

I voted yes... I want to see some of the UT maps transferred.

Phobos would be one of the ones I'd like to see.

Any map that has an outdoor theme will likely get revamped too... to take advantage of the new engine.

Imagine Arcane Temple being redone. With the current one you don't get much of a view when you grab the sniper ammo on the ridge... plus the outdoor area could easily be expanded.

One thing that worries me is the big map problem in UT. You need a lot of people to make a big map fun to play. Will this hurt gameplay in the new versions?

Another thing that everyone seems to worry about is this powerup stations thing. Now I thought I saw somewhere that you start with all the weapons but limited ammo for each one. You need to find the stations to reload. Starting with all weapons just prevents people getting ambushed with a pistol(which I see is gone! )

I love Arcane Temple, but it has some major gameplay flaws that make it kind of a bad map. It would be great to see it redone and tweaked a little bit.

The problem are the serveradmins

No matter who does which map when, the admins decide what is played. And I fear that we get dozens of Face-only servers and similar crap again

I would have a hard time playing on LAN w/o any Willhaven maps.. So while I love the thrill of new maps, there's many, many UT ones that I would love to carry forward.

Not that I would put money on it, but I'm sure it'll only take a short while before someone comes up with an automated tool to speed map conversion.

id like to see new maps made for U2 and UT2 of old faves, not just conversions... why bother? what i really cant wait for are new maps with the new game to see what some of the mappers can do with it! :cool:

and yes, face doesnt sukc too badly but i still dont enjoy playing it...

and if you voted on the most popular maps with the players who played the most i can virtually guarantee you wouldnt come up with all of the original maps in the top 10... just cause alotta server admins dont rotate custom maps doesnt mean the defaults are the most popular...

Anyway, as we're on the subject of conversions you can go to deja-review (http://www.deja-review.com) if you want to.

It's got loads of conversions for different games.

Face sucks, Lava Giant sucks. Phobos is above average (hey, I played the demo to death okay?).

The only maps I like are Deck16 and that other one. You know the one. Besides I prefer user maps.

Yes, I'd like to see some of the better maps from UT and Unreal converted to fit the UT2 gameplay. It would be nice to see them with the improved graphics. :)

Well let's be fair, they're both brilliant maps. Liandri is probably my favorite UT map for straight DM.

I'm late to this discussion folks and now cannot find the original article to confirm it but: it was once said that converting old UT maps to UT2 won't physically work because the scale is sizeably different in UT2.

Wish I could find the article but it's point was a little like conervting a picture-- easy to make it smaller but if you enlarge it-- bleh...

I'll go hunting for the article...

No, you won't be able to change the file name and plop it in UT2 or U2 like you are pretty much able to do with Unreal->UT. But people will still be able to "convert" a map by simply rebuilding it with the new Ued...

...which is what most everyone in this thread is discussing.

My 2pennorth is that most of the goodmaps are going to get converted sooner or later.

Hmmm .... I wouldn't put it past some bright spark to get some kind of automation going.. . I don't know if this is a realistic prediction but it wouldn't surprise me.

I'm very much hoping that we will still have access to upgraded versions of the UT models ..... i certainly will want to continue playing using some version of the Kira Commando. Beautifu and modest.


and I also look forward to seeing a souped up version of Freylis. Oh yes:)

I came to appreciate it much later than i did the other nights. i needed to have gotmy foothold in to using the rocket launcher. took me along time to familkiarise myself with THAT weapon:D

Yeah they should and will remake certain maps. There obviously has to be some gameplay changes, but I think that it will be the same map you knew.

Face
D-day assault level
LavaGiant
Zeto
Deck16
Curse
Coret
Conveyor

They should redo gallion with the boat next to a doc. You can walk on the doc, and into the town near the doc. This would make more open, and give it better gameplay, while still keeping the cool look.

Unreal II should see the reincarnation of these maps as an addon or custum map, but would have to be run in a practice session or such it owuldn't be part of the game because it wouldn't fit
Vortex rikers and the level following it.
All of the na pali haven maps including the outpost 3j
The skaarj generator.

I don't think that the start with all weapons will affect core gameplay much. They won't give you very much ammo with the larger weapons, and where the weapons would have been placed, will be replaced with the ammo location places.

They also HAVE to make a mod that will re-create the origional unreal with the unreal II engine. Playing unreal is still amazing, and it'll blow your mind with the new engine. Just think of how beatiful that waterfall in the second level would look with U2's new particle engine.

I do love CTF, and Face is my favourite, followed closely by Lavagiant.
I know many ppl don't like face because of the lame spawnsnipers, which I think is annoying, but it has made me excel my skills with the sniperrifle myself, in close combat, hunting down spawnsnipers, and even sniping myself (never spawnsniping tho, I DO have some dignity left... )
ctf-face is also very easy to write, so it suits coding sessions well

( open ctf-face?mutator=MyNewMutator.MyKewlWeapon )

Liandri is my favourite DM map, cause it's really optimised for deathmatch in every way...

It's Deck16 converted from UT to Red Faction :D
Combining something good from two worlds, the map from UT and the weapons/geo-engine from RF (O LOVE the sniper and precision-rifles from RF, but I hate the railgun cause I'm always hit :hmm:

Amen! I would second that. Seems it could be a much more detailed remake under UT2. Would simulating an entire city be asking too much of the engine? I'll bet we'll find out soon enough.
And I'd further bet on a happier ending than the BestBuy GF4 deal too..

At the end of the day, the development team know which maps are good and bad and the good (eg Curse][, Deck16][, Liandri, Phobos) will be invariably converted to the new engine - just stick another digit on the end (Curse ]|[, Phobos ][ etc...).

I keep on thinking Tribes 2 when it comes to UT2. Perhaps they'll rip a few of the T2 maps.

Hopefully they wont rip a few of those Tribes 2 maps. I couldn't imagine trying to go the top of the base by using hover jets because the developers decided not to include stairs.

ut2 might not even have similar gameplay (id be dissapointed if it diddnt, but you have to think) as ut. so the old maps might be totally useless

Converting face would be an awful mistake imo. A map with few plus points (except when used with Strangelove).

Linadri, Phobos, Deck16, Curse, Coret, Conveyor all are great maps, and would convert well to U2 I think. But I think overall, a new set of maps would be better. It's great to play the old maps, but a bit of a change is great, and we'll see a few more classics in the making :)
