View Full Version : Flakspam no more!

I saw this in a preview of UC on Gamespot:

One major change pertaining to weapons is the Flak Cannon's updated range and spread capabilities. Shots no longer bounce and the distance you are from a target greatly affects how much damage you dole.

well as it seems atleast this will take out alot of the point of spamming flak across levels and also the blasted spamming around corners in cramped levels :)

I feel pretty certain this updated flakcannon will be in UT2 too once the UC conversion is done. I'm sure the developers are aware of our love for flak as it is

/me likes this :)

I havent seen anything about the ripper though. Anyone else has?

Ripper = R.I.P.
BioRifle = R.I.P.

aaaw! no ripper! damn, i loved headshotting with that! couldn't they have just made it a slower load time, and explosive discs only? so you could still headshot, you just can't spam with it, it's a damn useful weapon when used right

The Ripper rulez! BioRifle too!

Why do they remove 'em??? I hope they'll put some other weapons with similar functions in!

[IsP]KaRnAgE
6th Jan 2002, 10:40 AM
well its only fair that they edit the shock combo then.
It can be just as spammy and cheap (in deathmatch) as a flak can. But no one seems to see tha because of the extra step it takes to use it.:(

EDIT: Though i do agree the flak in UT was a little too bouncy some times (getting killed by flak you fired a whole 3 secs after you fired it. :( )

The removal of the Ripper and BioRifle was in one of the press kits leaked early. I forget which site I read it on.

Well you can always find some peeps who love Ripper, Bio and flak and some peeps who hates shock, RL or whatever. Thats just how it is, but if there were a poll about spammy gameplay ruining weapons I think bio, ripper and flak would be at the top.

Law

The ripper and bio were definitely underrated. But I'm willing to see what Digital Extremes replaces them with. I'm sure the community will find more weapons to have a love-hate relationship with.

Yeah, well you know SOMEONE'S going to make a UT Weapons Pack, and port/create all the UT weapons and put them in UT2. INCLUDING the Ripper, Flak and Bio. I can pretty much guarantee someone will do it.

why does everyone think flakking is 'lame'?

Tetris L
7th Jan 2002, 12:13 PM
Because it is. :p

There was a little note once in one of the DE dev diary updates (before they pulled them), that gave me a lot of hope:

Game related; we are implementing some elegant solutions to the old 'hardcore' vs. 'regular players' game play debates and topics (spamming is one of those). I will not go further into it other then to say that it will ease the pain suffered on both fronts.

I don't know how to interpret that, but I'm hoping for a server side setting, lets say from "Classic" to "Hardcore", where "Hardcore" really deserves its name, not like UT's hardcore which is more the normal spam-o-rama. ;) From a real 'hardcore' server I expect spammy weapons toned down a lot, friendly fire on, higher speed, less ammo, ...

Almost every weapon has a few parameters that you could adjust from "spammy" to "precise": Splash damage radius, bounce, shards, speed, rate of fire, ...

fragswill
7th Jan 2002, 01:26 PM
It totally depends on how you use the flak. Close-combat flakking is where you "should" use it.. if they flak shards disappeared a little sooner and didn't bounce around it would be all good.. but then it would be just about the same as a double-barreled shotgun.

DeTriXeZ

I agree whit fragswill. By the way i love your jungle logo map.

Yes, the redeemer is out.

http://xbox.ign.com/previews/16292.html
... the Redeemer has been replaced by a sort of paint gun for outdoor levels that allows you to target an object so that a satellite from space can shoot down a huge laser blast on the location.

yeah im all for a hardcore mode that reduces spaminess. of course the combo would have to be slighty adjusted too. :)

BAHH suck it up ladies. I mean The Flak and Bio and ASMD & whathaveyou are what make unreal , well itself. If you want weapons that only depend on aim and no splash go hop on a Q3 server. None of the weapons are cheap. It's all about knowing the rite weapon for the rite situation. It makes my blood boil when I shock combo someone for the fifth time and they call me shock hoe in 1 vs 1. I mean just becuase they walk the same idiodic path every time. If you are going to cut someone off asmd combo is the best way to do it. I find a lot of the poeople that complain about cheap weapons arent any good at UT (not to say you all aren't) but in my experience thats what it is. So in closing I would just like to say "Play the game and don't complain".

PS- I am always looking for a good 1 on 1 so If you are interested email me or icq me. I am sure there is someone here that can show me what being onwed is all about?

The flak and ripper both have something in common: their primary fire is considered spammy but, in the hands of someone who knows how to use it, their alt-fire can be deadly.

Flak - when you need to hit the areas other weapons cannot reach.

Ripper - "I hope you don't always walk along the edge of a ledge".

You can always tell when you've got a Q3 player in your UT deathmatch because they use nothing but the flak cannon (or rocket) and are ridiculously effective with it, even though it looks like they move and dodge like complete noobs.

What is up with this totally misguided opinion that Q3A players change weapon less than UT players? Q3A players change weapons far more than UT players do. You have to change weapon more often in Q3A as the weapons are more specilised. In UT its usually a case of rockets or shock and then a switch to finish them off. In Q3A you really do change weapon on the fly (as Q3A has such a fast weapon change time)

all the q3ers i know that play ut are mini/pulse/rifle whores

the switch in q3 is faster.. so it letsyou do that sort of thing

also more uters play ctf than any other game type (off the top of my head?) and you dont really need more than 1 gun in most cases

I don't like this idea very much, Tetris, for one reason. Part of getting skilled at the game, like in UT, is learning how weapons work. Knowing your weapons limitations, splash damage, and reactions is VITAL to becoming a skilled player. If every server I log into is different, it will be damned near impossible to ever become a consistent player. I mean, what if in some servers, primary shock did 50 hp damage and in some 10hp damage, and in others 20 hp damage? I need to know my weapons to use them effectively. It part of good weaps play. If you start making weapons responses and damage numbers as a setting that is at the server admins discretion, weapons play will no longer exist.

no that would suck. i just mean all sorts of cool combos, that are all different and can do cool things. such as [insert ideas here].
