I was @ PlanetUnreal, and got new info on UT2 Info and Pics!

Unreal Tournament 2 Scans! - redef - 10 Comments
1/2/02 12:49 PST - General UT News
A French gaming magazine by the name of Joystick has featured Unreal Tournament 2 in the January issue of their magazine (available since Friday, I am told)! The article is a preview that contain many screenshots, and is written entirely in French (tough luck for many of us out there). The facts come from a hands on account of playing UT2, so you can be certain that this game is not a simple rumor (think something around the lines of Unreal Championship for the PC). A huge thanks goes out to Benoit for sending in the news and the 4 scans that I've made available below. I’ve sized them down quite a bit so if you do have the ability to read French it will probably be quite difficult (you should go buy the magazine, anyway). Here are the goods:

(I will post the links for the pics next post.)

I read Joystick every month or so ;)

The article is basically saying that UT2 is not just an evolution of UT. Epic is making the engine, and DE is making the content, with the objective of satisfying former UT players and making it easier for newbies to join the fun.
(BTW: UC is mentioned as being mainly an experiment, whose some concepts will be used in UT2)
The journalist was impressed by the particle engine, the animation system and by the RADIOSITY lighting that has been added to the 3D engine (woa, can't wait to see this with my own eyes, radiosity is a pain in the a** to implement in a realtime rendering engine, especially considering the dynamic elements to be rendered) but the most impressive thing was the Math Engine, wich handles all physics in the game (with success).

The artice also mentions the variations of the Dodging (combo-moves) which are divided in 2 categories:
simple moves, which use only one basic movement key
more complex moves, which use some "energy" (when an opponent dies (s)he lets a glowing ball containing some energy of this kind)

Looks great, doesn't it? Incidentally, you'll find threads on this in our U2 and UC Forums, as everyone seems to be confused (as am I:))on where UT2 info belongs.

almost all of these new ideas seem like bad ideas. I mean, i can see logic in them, if a more classic style were available as well. But if this is gonna be it, then many people(mostly clan people) might abandon it. There is always hope that Unreal 2 will offer a more classic clan worthy style of play.

I'm excited about all of the differences. I love the idea of combos (even team combos) and special moves. Sure the boring hitscan fans will shun it... but they already thought that about Unreal and UT to begin with.

I'm reserving final judgement for when I have mine loaded up and running. :D

Well, all you have to do now is to go and tell Infogrammes about your dislikes.Of course they will tell you that UT2 doesn't exist and go to hell, but you'll tell them that you know better.:D

Thats how I see it...just wait and see before passing swift judgement. Who knows? maybe there will be a way for the Server Admin. to turn the combos off.

Even if it can't be done it wont bother me especially knowing there will be vehicles in the game and that video clip of UC looked sweet also.

People fear change.

If you think about half the arguments these people are making they are irrevalent. The biggest on being recharge stations are bad. Well no you see you run under the stations just like grabbing health, only now you can gain more. Some people say what if others camp the staions; well what if others camp the health? It's all the same stuff people are just upset that they will have to learn to play something new. As far as double jumps and super moves go, I am hyped. It just adds that much mor estrategy and complexity to a rather dulsome set of moves. As a FPS gamer you either evolve or die, end of story.

rechargable stations are already done in HL... and no camping on them in my games.

well, i was trying to read those "petit" letters on the magazine DeBlackGokou scanned (i know i bit of french, but not as much as TaoPaiPai or Namu :D ), and in the part where it says "le Mapping pour tous", i think i read a part it says UT2 will support Gmax. Am I right about that?

Please answer. Thx.

Later,

No they just said that you could import geometry directly from 3dsmax.And after that they thought they had to talk about gMax for the 3000th time (maybe they're paid for that?),but at the moment there's no official confirmation that there will be a gMax kit to create player models(to my knowledge).
As for the levels themselves you can use Unrealed itself and a bit of 3dsmax for complex decorations (you'll proly be able to import level geometry from Gmax if gMax has the same file formats than 3ds)

Well I am currently learning 3D Max R4, does this mean that I can import Geometry as well, or only GMAX can do this ? I mean they are the same product right (well kinda the same)?
