What does enabling Direct Input do?

By default its disabled. But it only seems like it would be a good thing right? I guess it would probably increase control response time or accuracy? but would i take a hit on my fps?

It increases the smoothness of your mouse control. I haven't noticed a hit in my fps by doing it. It gets only better.
