Just taking a new role call, seeing who does what. Post pics if you'd like. There are some pics here (http://forums.beyondunreal.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=91881&highlight=foot+plant), thanks to Fuct and myself playing a little Pic tennis. :)
I skate and snowboard, and would love to try surfing. I am old school. Very old school. Here's how old school I am:
Skate set-up: Blockhead "Hard Times", Indy 196's, Powell Mini-rats, 57 x 35 @ 95A.
http://www.oldschoolskates.com/images/DECKS/642.jpg http://www.oldschoolskates.com/images/WHEELS-po/pomr.jpg
Snowboard: K2 HC 169 w/ mondo high back bindings.
I had a skate problem a while back. I ground my back truck down about half way through to the axel, and my kingpin nut got so thin that it popped off. I had to saw off the top of a new kingpin because it extended out too far. My front truck is also down to the axel, mostly because I switch my trucks to avoid uneven wear due to grinding. I love my 169's, that are sooooo sweet on curbs, thay slide like butta! Too bad that the more I grind, the more likely they'll snap on me.

Normally I inline when I can but right now I feel like a kicked my shin into the sharp edge of a metal box....Oh wait I did.
My skates are made by these (http://www.razorskate.com/itmidx1.htm) guys. But I have like one of the VERY first models that they made. The intire blade is metal. Looks cool and they're great for ramps/half-pipes cause you can adjust the wheels to varying heights, but concrete+metal=you falling on your ass. Great for grinding metal pipes and what not though. ;)

Man, that sucks, I feel your pain. I opened up my shin on a ledge and it bled for 2 days...lol I wouldnt go to the hospital, opted to be like Rambo instead.:)
It's really interesting to see how Razors have evolved. They're good skates.
This winter, Im gonna snowboard. It was a friend of mine's passion, and being that she is no longer among us, I will continue to carry on the spirit.
I miss playing in the snow anyways...

I've been skating on and off since about '85 and snowboarding since '88 so I don't know if that proves I'm old school or just old.:) I still love it though, in spite of the fact that I'm a little less apt to go for the big hand rail these days, and a little more apt to just cruise around and pull a few little curb tricks. Oh well, shins don't last forever kids.;)
Here's my list of boards, I still remember my early ones:
1. generic wooden old thing
2. Variflex Loco Yokel
3. Powell Ripper ramp model
4. Santa Cruz Corey O'Brien Reaper
5. H-street (can't remember this one either, had a guy being x-rayed on it)
6. Alva John Gibson
7. SMA Natas Panther
many others....
Right now I have a board I was given free by some friends who run a skate shop in San Francisco. No graphics left on it, so I don't know what kind it is.:D
Always wanted a Lucero Red Cross, but never got the chance.:(

Yes, snake runs kick ass.
I used to frequent this drainage ditch back home. It had an excellent downhill pitch with a slight curve, and at the bottom it butted into an even larger ditch, creating a spine. Overall, the walls were 5-7 feet tall. All in all it had some snake run qualities.
You could get air off the inside of the curve. You could transfer over the spine. You could grind on any number of lips. At he bottom, there was a big ass drain pipe sticking out that you could ollie over, grind over via the transition lip, or, my signature move, pull an edger over. We "borrowed" two ultra-slick yellow parking blocks to add to the fun - board slides, rock-and-rolls, and grinds with increased difficulty. We got some free pallets, broke them down, and made a vert extension.
We could ride only about 5% of it. The rest was full of silt, debris, and weeds. It would take about 10 minutes to walk it end to end. One summer we tried to reclaim some if it, but we never got to far as we'd always end up skating instead. We did clear enough to ride a little path through, with precision carves required or you'd eat it inthe silt or debris.
God, I spent more time there than any other skate spot. We'd skate through the buggy and wet springs, we'd sweat our arses off in the summer, we'd sweep it in the fall, and yes, on occasion, we'd have "arctic skate" sessions and ride in the winter. Sometimes having to shovel it.
I miss it dearly.

You come up to a curb at a ~30deg angle and try to ollie it so that you will land with your back truck on the edge (ie nearly a boardslide). But you ollie like you would an ollie manual so you land at a blunt. to balance you take pressure on/ off your foot that's ABOVE the ledge. To get off you press the other one and do a 90deg spin.
As for noseblunting... I have no idea

Wow. I'm going to get sentimentel here.
That pic of Vallely and his old elephant board totally put a wierd feeling in my stomach. I remember back in the day...man...back in the mid and late 80's thinking that Powell&Peralta were pretty much gods.
I remember when the Search for Animal Chin came out...and I witnessed the most insane halfpipe ever...that 20 minute end of them skating on the half ruled.
I remember thinking that McGill was a god.
I remember putting on my copers on my Trackers, and making sure I also had a lapper. All on my super stylish Bones Board. We're talking the original Bones Ripper board, with the skull ripping out, with the wheel wells, and absolutely no shape to the board at all. :)
Remember...
Minis. I had a Mini-McGill.
Bonite. That black paper that was sandwiched in P&P boards.
I used to skate everyday, all day, all night, with my friends, perfecting our 360 boneless's, our judo beanplants, and even trying our hand at ho-ho's. Yes, I said it. Ho-ho's.
I remember seeing my first "No Comply". Some kid in my neighborhood did in infront of us and said he saw this new skater called "Matt Hensley" do it. lol ;)
H-Street.
Tony Magnusson.
Omg.
Remember Kevin Staab? His boards with the sailors and parrots and all that sh!t all over them. heh.
I remember being in Germany in 1989, and going skating with the Santa Cruz team, Eric Dressen included, Salba there and he wasn't able to ollie up a curb. Man did that day rule. Nothing quite like sitting on the top of a half with Dressen and Salba, chatting with them and getting to skate with them. I think I was 17 then.
Vison Skateboards.
Mark Rogowski. aka Gator. Murder. Jail.
Jeff Phillips, inventor of the Phillips 66. What a handplant. I remember the full page "In Memory Of" Thrasher ran when he died.
I remember going to the Skateboarding World Cup in 90, where Danny Way tried 900's and then gave the board he tried it on to my brother. I remember seeing Chris Miller to huge gay twists that took up the whole ramp at that competition.
I remember Mullen and his incredible freestyle runs.
I remember me and my friends jumping the fence, again at the World Skateboarding Cup in 90, for Tony Hawks final run, and getting to watch it at the base of the ramp while a ton of pros sat around us, Natas, Mullen, you name it, they were there.
Man.
I remember all those good times, me and my skate, me and my brother practicing 360 kickflips, me and my good friends waiting in turn at a jump ramp to throw a good melonchollie off of it. All of us skating together...the sound of my wheels on the pavement, my trucks on a metal pipe, the slap and then scrape of the wood of my board as I threw down a nice long frontslide boardslide. The ping of wood against metal when I'd do handrails.
Those were some of the best times of my life.

Damn, I_AM, you almost made me cry. I basically have the same memories - outside of the contests. That Vallely pic had the same effect on me. Check out this link (http://www.breakoutmag.com/oldschoolskateboards.html) - there are SOOOOO many more old school adds/pics. Talk about a flashback.
LOL @ Bonite! The $hit would expand if you douched! :D
Ah, copers. I would grind through Indy copers on curbs. Red copers left an awesome mark. Eventually I stopped using them - my akel-bare Indys would throw sparks on the right curbs. :)
Neil Blender kicked (and still kicks) ass.
I remember Matt Hensley skating in Docs, doing all sorts of crazy street $hit.
Bones Brigade Video Show - Hawk, Cab, Mountain - all ackward teens having loads of fun. What it's all about.
Future Primative - Peralta doing that crazy manual swing for what seemed like forever. Was that the vid where Blender and Mountain out plywood throughout the house to skate it? LOL!
Animal Chin - Kicked ass. Period. Jelly-Mumbo!
Wheels of Fire/Streets on Fire - Santa Cruz's onslaught. Jason Jesse, Natas, Salba... OMG
Hocus Pocus - The first video I saw almost completely dedicated to pure, raw street skating.
/those years kicked ass...

I was visiting friends in San Francisco and they had just come across some boards some way or another. I felt a little foolish around the young kids cuz' I have no idea what's up these days as far as skating goes, but we still had the best time.

About 40 feet lower than where he started, if I'm not mistaken. You can see a dark spot in the dirt where they cleaned up a landing for him. The guy IS insane; he's in a league completely all his own. Another extreme rider described Bender by saying "He's so far into the deep end, nobody can touch him."

Here you go.
When you're standing on your board, put your back foot way up on the tail and your front foot right behind you front truck bolts. Apply pressure on your front foot, almost like you are pushing down with your foot, and then jump like you're going to ollie but without dragging your foot up to make the ollie. The board will flip for what appears to be no reason at all. :)
It's the concept that's odd, you're making the board flip, instead of kicking it, you're letting the board flip because of the pressure you're placing on it. Keep fooling with your foot placement, that's the most important thing.
They're easy once you do them, it's just doing it the first time that is wierd. Kinda like doing an front-foot impossible. Really wierd to try, but once you do it you think to yourself "and WHY was this so hard??"
Good luck man...and damn...is it hard to describe how to do that. Not that I've even done one for 4 years.
Yes, I was just standing up in my office hopping in place trying to remember how to do it. :)

How do you do a boardflip (Shuvit flip arg at weird names as opposing to excat ones)?
And a Big Spin? And a Cabbalerial? A Gay Cabbalerial? How how how?

Boardflip? You mean kickflip? Pretty basic, just ollie, and kick your front foot backwards, behind you. That will drive the edge of the board to flip. Flip it. Land it. Chill.
Caballerial. Allright...you're kinda talking half-pipe terms here. Caballerial is actually just a fakie 360 on a half. Steve Caballero "invented" them, hence the name.
Gay Caballerial is with a grab. You ride fakie (backwards), spin off the lip of the half, and then land facing down the ramp.
I can't do them (I never rode half, just street), but it's pretty much the same as snowboarding. Ride fakie, and as you approach your jump (lip, whatever), begin to rotate your shoulders the direction you are spinning. As you pop off the lip (jump), suck your knees up to your body, that will pull the board up with you. As you spin, since your head comes around first, spot your landing, and aim for it. Rotate, release your grab as your knees catch up with your shoulders, and land stylishly.
If you do that, tons of hot girls will immediately come running up to you, giggling and screaming with excitement, and shower you with kisses.
Trust me.
;)

Me seconds that question...what's a button-toe? If you mean toe-wedges for you snowboard, there's two reasons to buy them.
1, if you have monster feet like me (size 12-13 US) it lifts up your toe to stop toe-drag,
2, you can use it to get a quicker response on your toe edge turns, since your leverage has changed.
Does that help?

My liking for skateboarding/BMX etc involves me staying firmly on the ground :) I love watching boarding, but I've only really been interested in it for the last year or so, and I think I'm a bit on the old side (22) to pick up a board and start skating :)
More power to everyone who does it though, just a pity the powers that be seem to want to ban street skating :hmm:

Yeah. I've seen some pretty 1337 boarders go up the tows quicker than I can say "p00p". When I've tried to copy them, I either:
1. fall flat on my face and looking like the n00b than I am, or
2. go about 10m, start thinking, "phuck me" and then fall over :hmm:
Anyways, I'm going abroad soon, so I should be able to nail it :)

Actually, you'll be much better off if you don't slap that thing between your legs. I used to frequent a mountain here in Maine where the only way up the hill was a T-bar. The real trick is just not to panic on the thing. Just relax and let it push you. But really, you'll be much better off if you don't put the bar between your legs. You don't really sit on it either, Just stand up and let the bar push you, resting as little weight as possible on the bar. When you stick the bar between your legs or try to sit down on it, that's when you have the potential for the bar to recoil and/or start twisting, and that's when life starts to suck in a real hurry. Best advice, keep trying it till your completely relaxed on the bar, then you'll wonder why you ever feared the damn things.:)

No, not like a waterskier. You want your back leg to rest on your board between the bindings. Make sure you get on so you can hold the pole with your back hand. Then let the bar sit against your leg just below your butt. It's like your almost sitting on the bar except your not. The bar is pushing you, not carrying you.

Haven't been in awhile because I need new gear(board, boots, etc.) but my home mountain has always been Sunday River. The mountain I was talking about with the T-bar was Saddleback. Excellent little place. It has all those old school New England ski trails that are super narrow with tons of twists and turns so that they run like crazy tunnels through the trees. - You young ’uns need to learn about footing, or stance. “Regular footers” skate with their left foot forward; “goofy footers” with their right foot forward. Pretty simple. It doesn’t matter if you’re regular or goofy—neither one is better than the other—do what feels comfortable to you. As for why it’s called “goofy,” supposedly it was more common in the early history of surfing for people to ride with their left foot forward. Nowadays it seems even. “Switchstance” is when a goofy foot skater performs a trick regular footed (or vice versa). Switchstance skating has gained prominence in the last eight years or so, and I suspect that one day skaters will no longer make the distinction between regular and goofy footed. Pushing. How you push is very important. Always push with your back foot. It gives you more power and just looks way better. “Mongo-foot,” “Sugar-foot,” and “*****-foot” are just a few terms used to describe people who push with their front foot. Don’t push with your front foot, you’ll look like a total candy-ass. It’s about as graceful as a pig on stilts. I guarantee you’ll never get sponsored either. I don’t know of any professional skateboarders these days that push mongo. Off hand, the only pros I can think of who pushed mongo were Bill Danforth and Eric Dressen (and that was back in the ’80s). I had a friend who rode for Alien Workshop way back in the day (early ’90s) and they forced him to push normal. I have another friend who swears that pushing mongo gives you more maneuverability, but that’s just because he’s been pushing that way all his life. He also has a severe pain in his hip that is caused by the way his body has to swivel when he pushes mongo. The only time mongo is acceptable is when you are pushing long distances and your back leg gets tired. Some people, when skating switch, push mongo. This is not a good idea either, but it’s more acceptable than outright mongo pushing. I know you kids never listen to good advice, but please, just this once, heed my warning: DON’T PUSH MONGO!!!!

Oop, and about T-bars:
If it's not a long T-bar, I just hook the bar behind my front leg, behind the calf, and hold on with one hand. Works OK, but if's it's a long lift I could see it causing some undo discomfort or leg muscle exhaustion.

It is really good to see that folks remember the old days, and still appreciate them.
Many of the pics, and names bring back very fond memories for me.
I had the pleasure of Working for Powell Peralta from 85-91. I worked in the T-shirt, and deck printing departments, and had the awesome job of printing prototypes for new artwork and skaters. Heck, that Ripbones deck could have been printed by me, but the went out of production shortly after I started to print decks. But I can take credit for the color seps on the Vallaly deck.
I still have 7 decks from the old days, that I cant bare to do anything with, but hang on the wall. My favorite is a Ray Barbee print that was never released, and we only did 8 prototypes of before George P shot down the artwork.
Well anyway, thanks for remembering!!!

Actually, it was George Powell who nixed that design. I was really shocked, standing in the design room with the all the decks laid out, he walked in took one look, and said, “It’s to satanic, lets come up with something new.” That was the last thing I ever thought I would hear George say! George like to pick all the colors for new artwork, and then have 2-3 sets of prototypes done with different colors. The sad thing was, he’s color blind!! Many times I put my own colors in, and they got passed!!:D
Now for Bones. For folks that don’t already know, George Powell with a background in Chemistry, invented the urethane skateboard wheel. The first wheels he made, had no pigment, just plain urethane, which is kinda off white. One day He and Stacy were testing his new wheels at a skate park in Santa Barbara called Golf&Stuff. While Stacy was talking to George about the new wheels, a kid walked up to them. The kid said, Hay mister, those wheels look like Bones. At that moment, the world of Skating took a huge leap forward, and an Industry Icon was created. To be honest, this was the story told to my by Chris Iverson, my first supervisor at Powell. His claim to fame is, if you remember the hill sliding seen in Future Primitive 1 or 2(cant remember which one), He was the one you saw fly off into the bushes!!!
Is really good to hear McGill is still going!!

Anyway, I thought you might want to try you hand at finding your favorite Powell rider? Even Lance is on this deck some where!!

Did anyone see the bowl competition that was on TV recently? Cab, McGill, and some other peeps rode in the competition, they had an "old" group and a "young guns" group. I think Omar Hassan won the young group, while McGill won the older group
Yeah!
Omar Hassan 0wnz. He can skate Half-pipe, bowls and street.

Man, I wish I had actually seen the competition. I just happened to turn the channel, and they were showing someone riding a big wooden bowl. I was like "whoa...what's this?".
It was the re-cap of the event, and it just showed the winners, a click of McGill doing a McTwist, and Lance Mountain doing a frontside rock n' roll or something. Then it was over. :(
Guess I should check TV Guide more often! heh

This post was created to get all the bladers/skaters/boarders/bikers (in hindsight, my mistake in the topic ;)) to come together in one thread. To see who does what and to share interests. Seems like it's working. :p

Old 80's downhill kicks ass. I used to hill bomb, but nothing like that. We'd roll down small hills and slide to slow down or stop, mostly doing Bert and frontside wheel slides. I had a pair of Rector fingerless leather gloves (actually, probably 3 pair). with about 5 layers of duct tape on them to prolong their life. :D

http://www.slapmagazine.com/new_site/dec_01/data/curb.jpg
So I’m rolling up to my favorite ledge, the one that grinds just right. I don’t even need to test it, this ledge is already familiar. If I push really fast I can 5-0 the entire thing, through the crack even. One push, two pushes, three, ollie, zing! The back truck slips out from under me, and for a moment I am airborne, parallel with the ground. That moment seems frozen in time, the moment in which you realize that there’s no easy way out. This is going to hurt. Inevitably, I land flat on my back, knocking the wind out of myself entirely. When I can breathe again I open my eyes. Sitting there, on the ledge, is a giggling gaggle of groms who seem to take a sort of sinister pleasure in my current state of wheezing and gasping. Wearily, I turn my head to look at my once reliable ledge. From this angle I can now see a thick coat of greasy wax, baking and glistening in the mid-afternoon sun. Damn kids…
Although it may seem trivial, this is an important issue in the world of skateboarding. Lately, the new breed of ledge skaters roll up to a spot 10 deep, each with an enormous block of wax in hand. They look like a pack of vultures, surrounding their prey. They close in on a perfectly good ledge and move in for the kill, lathering it until it’s dripping with candle wax. Each member of the crew takes to a different section of the ledge, and proceeds to butter it up. Following this ritual, they line up and try their slappy noseslide nollie flips until the sun goes down. This entire process is wholly unnecessary, and in fact can be detrimental to your skating. For, if you learn how to skate on an overwaxed ledge, then you will never learn how to push your slides through. You’ll stick on anything that isn’t glazed, and you will be forever doomed to a lifetime of slappy noseslides and slow down pushes. What you ought to do is watch your favorite pros do the tricks you like, and watch how they do them. More often than not they possess three important attributes: speed, power, and control. These qualities come from a lifetime of going fast, and pushing your tricks through on dry, chunky ledges.
Now, normally I’m a peaceful guy. I usually get along with my fellow skaters, but sometimes, when I’m gasping for air with an excruciating pain in my back, that camaraderie can take a back seat to blinding rage. I can empathize, though. I realize that some of you may just be misinformed. Nevertheless, this unnecessary ritual must come to an end. So I have taken it upon myself to compile a list of guidelines for you, my fellow skaters, to keep in mind when waxing a ledge.
Less is More - When you slide or grind a ledge, you want to feel it. In fact, the very essence is to push your board across an unslideable surface. You should have to lean back a bit, and push your board through. When ledges become too buttery, 5-0s become manuals, nose grinds become nose wheelies, and nose/tailslides just feel like you’re standing on top of the ledge. If you use less wax—and I mean the bare minimum—you will not only slide fine, but feel yourself sliding as well.
Slip Tape - If you rub your candle all over the block, until there is a coat half-an-inch thick, then not only is your spot ruined, your board can get ruined, too. Too much wax, and you will get it on your foot when you miss or step off. That wax gets transferred from your shoe to your grip tape, and then your board is ruined. Your feet won’t stay on the board, and you won’t even know why. This is known as ‘slip tape,’ and it can render your board useless.
No Park Rails - Under no circumstances should skatepark rails be waxed! Come on, think about it. It’s a rail at a skatepark. It’s designed to slide and grind without the use of wax. And besides, once you do commit the deed, you are doomed to an eternity of waxing it. For once the wax wears off, the metal will be all dry and sticky. You’ll be forced to do it all over again. Better just to leave it alone, and break it in the old fashioned way—with speed.
Waxers Anonymous - If you think that you might be one of the wax-happy ledge monkeys out there, and if you’re spending all your lunch money on candles, then you may have a problem. Fear not, though, for all is not lost. There are rehabilitating exercises you can perform in order to wean yourself off the wax and back into normal society. And don’t worry, nobody expects you to quit cold turkey. It’s a long road to total wax independence, but it’s one you may have to walk.
a) Try leaving the wax at home. Go skating for a day without it. If you can make it through an entire day without greasing up the local Quick-e-mart curb, you’re doing all right.
b) When you feel it start to slow down a bit, before you reach for the wax, try going a little faster. Just humor me. Give it one more push, and see where it takes you. Remember, you are supposed to feel a bit of resistance in your slide/grind.
c) If you’re at a skate spot, and you feel like you’re sticking, try waxing your board instead. Think about it. If 10 people are skating a block, and you’re the only one sticking, maybe the problem’s not with the ledge. See what I’m getting at? Maybe that “dry” ledge is just another red herring.
d) And if you’re going to wax, wax sparingly. Do the top of the ledge for your nose, the side for your wheels, and the edge for your trucks. And that’s it. Oftentimes, one coat will do nicely. Please understand, I write this not with malicious intent, but with the aim to enlighten. I seek to educate, so that we can all enjoy the same spots, and live together in harmony. Doesn’t that sound nice?
Think about it this way—is a little bit of common courtesy for your fellow skater completely out of the question? Keep in mind that you probably aren’t the only one that’s going to skate that ledge. If you spend an hour waxing it to death, you are ruining a precious commodity. Aren’t skate spots scarce enough nowadays? There are times when the use of wax is appropriate, sometimes even welcome, but there remains a very thick line between waxing a ledge so you can slide, and waxing a ledge so you don’t have to push hard up to it. Be aware of which side of the line you are on, my friend. Wax abuse is skating abuse.

Im quite a new skata, only started in the summer cos I was bored and wondered what all the fuss was about. So I got a cheap board from my local skate shop (http://www.wahoo-clothing.co.uk) and went out and had some fun. I live right by the sea, not touristy, but lotsa concrete. There's some real cool ramps, imagine a half pipe on its side so it loops back at you and you get the idea. There are loadsa rails and ledges to grind and its usually pretty much deserted. In late August I got my new board: (pic from www.skateboard.com cos I dont have a scanner or digicam, on mine you can hardly see the design anymore :( )
http://www.skateboard.com/products/1022_lg.gif
On that I got world industries 53mm wheels, Ruckus 130mm trucks and some bearings I dont know the name of from the same skate shop as above.
Im not exactly a trick master, I tend to end up on my arse most of the time. I can manage about 50cm ollies on a good day I think, enough to get me onto a rail or ledge. Fave tricks are flip tricks like kickflips and heelflips off of ledges, they're what Im doing most of the time atm anyhow

Fuct - I hear that. Wax is for the toughest cases only.
Over here the terrain can be really nasty, ledges made out of that rough stone with the little rocks in 'em, and everyone waxes those suckers down, because without it you're headfirst in the bushes. I remember being confronted by the police for doing this at the World Trade Center...from then on we could only hit it fast and race away with security in pursuit...hehe :D But some of those ledges were just impossible to grind dry.
Marble never needs wax - I'm sure they got a lotta ledges made out of that stuff in heaven. And that's why marble is the greatest. Wall Street is loaded with it.
Rails are right out! No reason to ruin it with wax. Not only that, but the normal people who live or work around that area will really bitch about getting that schmutz on their hands when they go up & down steps.
I recall an argument I got into with a boarder at the local spot - he said the frames of my skates destroy the marble. I pointed out that my frames are made out of plastic..the trucks on skateboards are metal..am I missing something? It's not just me, it's Everybody. I looked over that the crumbling, grimy over-waxed and un-even ledges, and thought: Be it not me to point any fingers, but I think these bmx guys also hack these suckers apart with their heavy grinds.
Months later, that spot was capped on every ledge. Doh! Now no one has fun. No matter...a new spot will pop up, and hopefully people will do it up right from the start by not over-abusing the environment.

Got it right, learning to push out a grind is key. Dismount when you need to, not when the lack of wax hangs you up.
1) Wax is good on awful curbs in sweet areas. We used to session this looooong sidewalk at a closed down strip mall. Perfect height, lots of room to get speed up. One section had wheelchair accessibility, which is always fun to pop off and such. And no one bothered you there. We'd put the launch ramp in the back of my hatchback and spend the afternoon there. But the curb was hurting. It would even strip off my coper. ;) Wax saved that curb.
2) Too much wax is bad. LOL at Fuct - kids actually wax skatepark handrails? I guess they never heard of gravity. We had a local curb ruined by excessive wax. It was a steel capped curb at an auto parts store. A little stiff, but if you hit it right it was quite pleasing. Some yahoos waxed it up, not too much mind you, but enough to do two things: #1, you could grind it longer, but longer isn't better. The nice sound of metal on metal was gone. #2, the manager didn't like the black wax stain at the front of the store. I don't blame him. Plus I guess it could have been a hazard to customers, being slick and all. Nevertheless, "No Skateboarding" signs went up less than a week later after the waxing. :(

Agreed. Telemarking is hell. I consider myself an accomplished skier and an expert level snowboarder, but telemarking stumped me. I did not like it. Good luck with the teleboarding, I'm not sure I quite see the point of it since unlike telemarking, you can't use it as transportation on a horizontal surface, but I'm sure people wouldn't be trying it if it wasn't fun.:)

Despite what you may have heard, there’s no “right” way to skate street. There are no rules and that’s a big part of why it’s so damn good, but I always end up hearing the opinions of two different factions of street skaters. So, let’s throw all the cards on the table and get it all out in the open once and for all, shall we?
Skater one: Street skating is all about flow; it’s about spontaneity. Your problem is that you either sit at a spot and try the same trick a thousand times until you finally make it, and even then, you’re not happy! Either that, or you go to a spot, bring your filmer, try something three or four times, then call it a night! That’s not street skating!
Skater two: Sure it is! My skating is just as valid as yours. If anything it’s more focused. I know what I want and I go out to get it. What’s wrong with that? You just cruise along day after day. Some days you don’t even ollie! You leave your house with nowhere to go! You’ll never get anywhere that way.
Skater one: Maybe I won’t, or maybe I don’t need to. Maybe, I’m already there. I am where I want to be, alone with just me and my board. I don’t need to flip my board in order to have fun, and I don’t need people around to record my skating either. My skating is pure. Filmers, photographers, sponsors, all that stuff just taints the true essence of skating. I am living for the moment.
Skater two: What’s wrong with photos? They don’t taint skating; it records a moment in time. It symbolizes all those perfect moments, and it will be a fond reminder years from now of good times that were had. It also is a symbol of progression and accomplishment—something I am proud of.
Skater one: Street skating is, by definition, skating on the street. Nothing more and nothing less. You’re not even really skating. You’re just doing tricks.
Skater two: You’re not really skating; all you do is cruise around! You don’t go down rails or do kickflips. You don’t even skate spots!
Skater one: Am I not skating on the street? Am I not on a skateboard? I am a street skater, and the streets are my spots. And at least I’m having fun. I see you stressing, screaming and throwing your board! For what? It doesn’t look like fun from here.
Skater two: Hell yes it’s fun! Sure, I may get stressed out at times, but that feeling I get when I finally make my trick makes it all worthwhile. My kind of skateboarding is a challenge, and it’s the challenge that I love.
Will these two factions ever resolve this dispute? Can’t we all just get along? Well one thing’s for certain, there are different strokes for different folks, and it doesn’t even matter. What matters is that we are skating how we want. There is a definition for it inside each and every one of us.

Heh. I've seen the arguments of those two factions before. Pretty stupid if you ask me. I skate because it's FUN. I enjoy doing it. I'm not trying to prove anything to anyone except myself.
I used to skate like "Skater One". My friend and I would skate for hours(5-6 usually) at a time and just flow from one place to another doing tricks whenever we found a good spot to do so. Of course this makes more sense on rollerblades. ;)
Now I skate more like "Skater Two". I goto the skate park and try to do one or two tricks over and over till I get them. This may have to do with the fact that I haven't really skated in a while and I'm kinda outta practice. But it feels good getting back into it and it's good exercise.
Anyway I finally got to try my new skates. I've skated at the park once with em and on the street. Let me tell you they kick ass. Solomon makes some awesome skates. At the park I can grind ALOT easier(more sole and the non-metal surface doesn't stick). They're alot more stable on the half pipes and ramps(the wider boot makes it alot less wobbly). On the street that "shock absorption" stuff that I thought was BS actually works. It's awesome. I can ride on rough concrete and barely feel it. This used to suck as your feet would start to get really irrirtated and feel like they were fallin asleep.
Needless to say I love em and I'm glad I got em. I'll be going to the park again on Tuesday most likely. I got my sole grind back and I gotta try to get it on half pipe now. ;)

Every skater has something that irks him. Maybe its that tranny extension that seems to drop straight to the ground when standing on the deck, that rail that looks as slippery as a freshly mopped floor, or that set of stairs that seems to create an abyss.
For me, it's handrails.
I broke my ankle really badly trying to 5050:(, and ever since then, I've stayed away from them!

Roger that, Fuct. I avoid handrails. I'm too old for those stunts anyway.
Just give me a sweet tranny or a stiff grind to push out and I'm A OK.

Yup, handrails can be bad. I used to ride them all the time, but one big wipeout and I was done with them.
I keep meaning to try rails on my snowboard...but I dunno...

Just thought I'd represent for the BMX massive. :D
Anyway, there is a place in London heavily guarded with security, with many skaters and BMXers having been arrested or chased by guards. A place, with marble so smooth, you'd think it was laid there just for skating, and handrails that almost look as if they're down on their knees, like a cheap whore, screaming "grind me!"
It's called Canary Wharf.

Pics? Old news my friends, its all about videos now! :D
This (http://www.hoaxskate.co.uk/footage/gregflman.mpg) (425Kb) was recorded on the University Of East Anglia grounds, in Norwich. Which is near me and Ive been there, so its great
The guys that are there work for Hoax (http://www.hoaxskate.co.uk) whcih is a local skate firm, making clothing, decks and videos, and selling on other people stuff. They've only got 2 shops, and a small team, but I get to see em making video's quite a lot when Im out and about. I can tell you now, they are awesome skaters. ie, better than me :D

Hello im a skater and ride blind boards. I got grind king trucks and spitfire wheels. I ride goofy. I just learned how to frontside flip, a nice little move but quite hard to land in switch.
Here are my two boards:

Welcome, Twigman! Sweet, but what's a frontside flip? A board flip, like a sex-change or impossible? (I'm too old school... :D)

I used to be a skateboarder, but football(soccer) is interfering, and now I can't skate as much as I used to. But, I can still bust out on a snowboard. :D I actually think snowboarding is alot more fun than skateboarding, for numerous reasons I can't think of right now because it's too early in the morning. :)

Holy sh*t! Sweet ride AMMAGETSVM! How much did it cost you?
AMMAGETSVM
3rd Apr 2005, 04:37 AM
a few hundred bucks each, still way cheaper than buying a fully built one in the bike shops. It's much easier to get the components and build them up DIY style.
All in all, riding these things in the city have pretty much taken the energy I once focused on skating. It's all good though. In a way it's the same kind of outlet...just get out there, do your thing and go off...

Wow how did I miss this one!
I used to be sponsored by 2 skate shops and a little New Jersey based deck company called Bad Okole. I was going amateur for SHUT skates in N.Y.C. years ago until a pretty bad ankle snap ruined any hope of future competitive skating. (Just couldn't get my board control back after that one)
Hopped on my first skinny plastic banana-board when I was like 10. Skated til' I was 25 or so. Skated in over NY/NJ local competitions. (All Street skat
