I noticed since BuF got its own coding forums the chimeric forum isn't used that much anymore, sniff :(

I think it's better when all the coders are in one place. :)

I take daily hikes here to see if I can help.
I think it's good with more forums, in case the action runs slow :)

Oops, spoke too soon. Appears there's a war going on, BuF vs. one of their hosted sites. Let's pray there aren't any casualties.

ca, it is not a war between BU and hosted sites...

It is about diversity. Like papapishu said:

Chimeric is a wealth of knowledge; however, they aren't the only source of information. Chimeric is a stand alone site. BU does not own or operate your site and we don't own your posts/threads.

If you (Chimeric) receives an offer you can't refuse and decide to leave (which we hope not) the BU forums, then BU and their members are left without a Coding forum. Chimeric has every right to ask for their posts/threads to be moved (if technically possible) and nobody at BU will say no.

I consider Chimeric an advanced forum and BU's Coding forum for newbies. Nothing wrong with that. I want to change the BU's description to "General posts about Coding" and change Chimerics to "Advanced Coding".

ca, you choose. Tell me what I should put in your description to attact more people.

It's silly to spread an already thin community even thinner. There's no sense splitting the forums between beginner and advanced, because there really isn't a very large difference when it comes to Unreal. And who else better to help the newbies than the advanced scripters?

The only reason I can see that the action would run slow in one forum is because everybody is using another one. So why not keep the resources combined where they do the most good?

To me this isn't about 'attracting people' - I just want to see a place where people can actively seek and obtain help. I am a bit offended that BuF decided to create a separate coding forum instead of consulting with me about the CHiMERiC forums, and how to fix whatever is wrong with them, or improve them to fit your needs.

It's all very silly.

aha Lol... good luck trying to make yourself heard Ca.
Anyway I consider chimeric being for experienced Uscript Gurus and the coding forum for newbies/general questions.

Anyway ,one idea would be to merge those two forums into one:The buf coding forums and the chimeric website would point to these f0s.

Agreed, it is silly.
Back when both the Chimeric and WoD coding boards got hosted, I did pipe up & say it seemed to me to be spreading coders thinly. I thought at the time the logical solution was to merge eveyone into one happy family next door to the Ed board.
However, not being an admin, I didn't want to be a busybody, so I brought it up quietly on what was then the PU board.

It now appears that the Chimeric & WoD boards have been shunted in with coding. IMO the names as they stand aren't very helpful, I would say that if the site boards are keeping their identities, the "Help Wanted" should be changed to WeaponsOfDesctruction :)
Though I suspect I've caught the admins in the middle of re-arranging and it's a very temporary setup :)

Yep when I first discovered Uscript, I posted my questions three times, one for each forum.
In hindsight this proberly would of been bad but I had no way of knowing who could answer.
I like it all in one because you can get additional ideas from questions and get the satisfaction knowing that all the great coders will read it.

Strange, TaoPaiPai...seems you are restating what I said earlier.

Anyways, the forums will be as they are now. But I really don't see the difference. You still have a separate Coding forum and a Chimeric forum. You say it's silly to split the forums, but they are split anyways. The only thing that has changed is the color scheme.

ca
15th Nov 2001, 11:46 PM
They aren't split - they've been merged. This thread originated on the old CHiMERiC unrealscript forum, case in point.

The CHiMERiC forum I assume you're mistaken about has always been about the CHiMERiC website in particular. Maybe somebody should remove the link as to avoid this kind of confusion?

Prophetus

ca, and that's how I had it before. We had a General Coding forum, a Chimeric Forum and a Help Wanted forum.

Now, we have...the same thing...

But you were complaining that we split the forums, when in fact, the forums weren't split. There was only one Coding forum, prior to this latest change. The only difference was, it was in the default BU color scheme.

I left your site's forum, Chimeric, under the General Coding forum and kept the Chimeric's forums colors intact. Now...what was the difference?

It appears, the only complaint is that the General Coding forum was not in Chimeric's color scheme. Therefore it appeared that Chimeric was not host to the General Coding forum.

So, by your statement, Chimeric is for your website. Now we have:

Chimeric

Help Wanted

Coding
___________________________

Whereas before I had it listed like this:

General Coding

Chimeric

Help Wanted

Again...show me how that split the coding forums if you claim that Chimeric's forum is only about the site?

Prophetus
16th Nov 2001, 12:23 AM
Basically, what I tried to do was put General Coding into a forum catagory. The way the page looks now, is a bit...well...ugly.

You have your forum up top with Help Wanted, but then have a slew of post under those topics.

See what I mean?

ca
16th Nov 2001, 12:26 AM
Before we had:

CHiMERiC - CHiMERiC: website suggestions/comments/etc
CHiMERiC - Unrealscript: general unrealscript coding questions
CHiMERiC - Help Wanted: help wanted requests

BU - Coding: general unrealscript coding questions

Now:

CHiMERiC - CHiMERiC: website suggestions/comments/etc
CHiMERiC - Help Wanted: help wanted requests

BU - Coding: general unrealscript coding questions

You're totally not understanding the situation here. I hope this helps...

Prophetus
16th Nov 2001, 12:33 AM
LOL, no...no...I did have it like this...before this LATEST change (the one you see now).

General Coding (with BU Default colors)

Chimeric

Help Wanted.

All three forums were in a CODING main Page. The main page did not allow people to post in it. All it did was allow people to see the three forums. Then they could click on any one of the three forums to enter.

Again, I only wanted to put the General Coding into it's own forum catatory so the posts/threads wouldn't appear under your two forums...understand?

ca
16th Nov 2001, 12:38 AM
I think we're each arguing about something different then. My only complaint has been that BuF created a Coding forum, which was competing with the CHiMERiC - Unrealscript forum (which was silly:)). I don't particularly care about how it looks, I think you and Chris need to work out the details of that.

As long as CHiMERiC's old Unrealscript forum has been merged with BU's Coding forum, I'm happy. Like I originally said, I don't want to spread the community anymore, no sense in having several Unrealscript forums spread out across the site.

Prophetus
16th Nov 2001, 12:48 AM
Yes, that was my main reason and desire. But I thought you were trying to keep Chimeric as a coding forum seperate from BU's coding forum:).

OK...can I change the forums again, so you can see what I mean. If you still don't like it...we'll revert back to this one.

ca
16th Nov 2001, 12:53 AM
Go for it.

Prophetus
16th Nov 2001, 12:54 AM
Actually, I don't really care what color scheme it's in. I do care about how it currently looks.

Prophetus
16th Nov 2001, 12:57 AM
ca, I'm going to wait for the other admin's inputs first. If they agree, we'll change it. All coding posts/threads will be in one forum. We can keep your color scheme, if you want.

Prophetus
16th Nov 2001, 01:22 AM
OK ca, is this how you imagined it? Or do you (as in everyone) still want it the previous way?

BTW, I won't be able to answer since I'm going to be AFK.

tarquin

If the board currently named "chimeric" is actually about the Chimeric website rather than about coding, wouldn't it be more logical for it to be under
Community > Chimeric: website suggestions/comments/etc
?

Then the Chimeric website would have its own hosted board, to discuss things specific to the site such as new tutorials etc, & the site would also point to the
Technical > Coding
board for general coding discussion.

(sorry ca my typing is too lousy to reproduce the capitalization :) )

As for "Help Wanted", I assume thats for mods to post notices about job openings. The name is succint once you know what it is, but n00b coders may think that that's where to go for help with coding...

I got mixed up with all the boards in my last post, the WoD coding board isn't currently invovled in this shake-up. Any plans to ask them to merge in too?

Euphoric Beaver
16th Nov 2001, 05:24 AM
Instead of a help wanted only in the coding forums, why not have a help wanted in the technical forum?
I'm not quite sure why mod teams would only be looking for coders.

And yep I agree with Tarquin, I think Chimeric should be put under hosted and just have one big coding forum that Chimeric and WOD could link to.

Prophetus
16th Nov 2001, 02:19 PM
I see your points about Chimeric being in a hosted (Community) sub forum; however, Chimeric is about coding. I would think Chimeric will receive more attention from coders, who come to the General Coding forum.

If a site is more about mods and not specifically about coding...then yes, they would benefit to have their forums under Community.

As I see it now, keeping Chimeric in the Coding forums allows new and old coders to know more about their site. Also, if there are other coding sites (that are strictly about coding) that want forum hosting, wouldn't it make sense to have them in the Coding forum?

People see the Community forums as a Mod specific forum. Non-Mod forums/sites become engulfed in this broad catagory and members miss out on the wealth of knowledge available to them. Eventually, with the community's approval, I would like to change the format of Community to

Community

--Mod Sites
---Infiltration
---TTR
---SAS
---so on and so on

--Mutator/Utility Sites
---BDB
---JTOnline

--Coding
---General Coding Forum
---Chimeric (talk about the website)
---another code specific site

--Level Design and Sites
---General Editing Forum (talk about everything related to Editing)
---Nali City
---UTBuilder
---Model Farm

These sub forum headers are for sites that are specifically about mods, mutators, coding and mapping. The forum headers will help people understand which forums are for Mods...etc.... Keeping them under Community is too broad and have the stigmatism of being regarded as Mod only forums.

For example, the General Editing forums (under Technical) will move to Level Designs. It won't be split, it will just move to another location.

As it is now, specific information forums, like Chimeric, cannot receive alot of attention because newbies consider it a mod forum. Of course, once they realize what Chimeric is, they begin to visit the site and forum.

What do you all think?

tarquin
16th Nov 2001, 02:33 PM
interesting...
I always think of the boards like NaliCity as being about the NaliCity site rather than actual technical stuff, but from what little I've seen of them I think I'm mistaken.

where would my hosted board go, or the Screen site hosted board go?

It's certainly a differnt way of organizing things.
Would you then put Troubleshooting back with the UnrealTournament, UnrealWarfare boards -- since it's aimed at people having trouble running the games rather than problems editing.
I'm very much a creature of habit, so naturally I ph34r change ;) but if this brings all coding boards together, as well as all the mapping boards together, I think it's a good thing.

Prophetus
16th Nov 2001, 02:52 PM
Well, Trouble Shooting and Help Wanted can stay in the Technical forums, like this.

As for your sites like yours. In first glance, your site appears to enhance Level Designing. At the same time it could be regarded as a Utility. Basically, you have the choice, present and future, to decide what location is best for you. Of course, if Map site asked to be put in a Mutator site...we'll discuss the logic of that choice:).

Here is a revised sample. I put Coding in with Level Designs, but still have it as a stand alone catagory. I figured, that anything dealing directly with Level Designing should fall under the LD catagory. Now, don't get confused with Mod forums.

I know someone will ask, "Well...Mods have or need coding, so why not put them in directly with Level Desiging or vice versa". Well, basically because I'm gearing towards what a site is specifically about.

If your site isn't about Coding, but it is about Mods...then the forum should go under Mods. It's all about what the forum's/site's main purpose is.

Tell me what you think.

Technical

Mychaeel
16th Nov 2001, 02:52 PM
Hmm. I wouldn't mind having the Screen forums moved under "Level design," and I guess the same holds for Tarquin's BrushBuilders...

[edit]
Mods do have to do with coding, of course, but I guess most mod forums are mostly dealing with maps, gameplay and general mod issues instead. I don't think it would be inappropriate to put them in a separate category under "Community."

By the way, I'd like to have "Coding" at the same level as "General Editing," if only to be able to see both forums' new postings without having to click on a subcategory first. I think Chimeric's forums would fit in nicely next to the other site forums in "Level Designs."

Prophetus
16th Nov 2001, 03:13 PM
So, you mean like this:

--Level Designs, Coding, Models and Sound
---General Editing Forum (talk about everything related to Editing)
---General Coding Forum
---Chimeric (talk about the website)
---another code specific site
---General Music and Sound
---Nali City
---UTBuilder
---Model Farm

The reason I put them under the Coding main forum was so people will see Chimeric (and future coding sites) as a specific Coding site/forum. The way it looks up there, I fear Chimeric will once again get lost in the list and be disregarded by coders. With it like this:

--Level Designs, Coding, Models and Sound
---General Editing Forum (talk about everything related to Editing)
---Coding <---(Main Page No posting allowed)
------General Coding Forum
------Chimeric (talk about the website)
------another code specific site
---General Music and Sound
---Nali City
---UTBuilder
---Model Farm

Chimeric is strictly tied to Coding and receive more attention. Yet the importance of allowing people to see new posts is very important too. If someone sees "Coding", as it is now...they may think it's a dead forum. Again, this is open for discussion.

Euphoric Beaver
16th Nov 2001, 03:29 PM
I know I'm a bit of a stick in the mud about this but I'd quite like to see the development forum like this.

Unrealed
- UnrealEd questions.
- Some specific sites.....

Coding
- Coding questions.
- Chimeric and other sites.....

Modelling
- Modelling questions.
- ModelFarm and other sites.....

Sound
- Sound problems.
- Some sound sites.

Prophetus, I understand what you mean about Chimeric, but I frankly see no point in having two general-purpose coding forums next to each other. Providing "General Coding" for beginner topics and Chimeric's forums for "advanced coding" doesn't really make it either; not only is it virtually impossible to draw a line between the two, it'd also be futile to try to communicate the difference to (new) forum users. Besides, Chimeric has some basic stuff among its tutorials too.

I see the purpose of Chimeric's forums in discussing Chimeric's site content (as opposed to general coding questions). Same for the Screen forums (they deal with a very specific part of level design) and Tarquin's BrushBuilder forums.

____________________________________________________

--Level Designs, Coding, Models and Sound

That is a main header forum page. It will list all the forums inside it.

____________________________________________________

---General Editing Forum (talk about everything related to Editing)

That is an actual forum to talk about Editing. It is and will be the only Editing forum to discuss Editing.
____________________________________________________

____________________________________________________

---Coding

This is not a forum. It is only a main page that will list each forum inside it. (See Below)
____________________________________________________

____________________________________________________

------General Coding Forum

Is the only forum (merged with Chimeric and others) to talk about all coding related topics.
____________________________________________________

____________________________________________________

------Chimeric (talk about the website)

This forum does not have a coding forum for advance users. It is only a forum to discuss topics about the website.
____________________________________________________

Sorry if I led you to understand that there would be more coding discussion forums, thus splitting the visitors. As ca wanted, all the coding forums are merged into one forum. In the future, any site that wants to be hosted, will understand the same thing. One Coding forum, then as many site forums you need.

Thus, it would look like this:

--Level Designs, Coding, Models and Sound
---General Editing Forum (talk about everything related to Editing)
---Coding <---(Main Page No posting allowed)
------General Coding Forum
------Chimeric (talk about the website)
------another code specific site (forums will discuss site related topics)
---General Music and Sound
---Nali City
---UTBuilder
---Model Farm

If you click on the BeyondUnreal Forums link then the Coding link, you will see what I mean.

Mychaeel
16th Nov 2001, 04:03 PM
That is a main header forum page. It will list all the forums inside it.Oh. Each one individually, so that "General Coding", "General Editing" and "General Music and Sound" would all be visible at the same time, including a new posts marker for each?

That'd be perfect (as far as I am concerned). All I want is to be able to see those three forums on the same page. :)

[edit]
The "Technical" link, I suppose. Looks good.

Prophetus
16th Nov 2001, 04:23 PM
Yes:). But you brought up good point. As I suggested, having Chimeric fall under the Coding Main Catagory (inside the Level Designs, Coding, Models and Sound) would not display new post markers.

That is because vB sees Coding as a seperate forum catagory.:(.

Your suggestion was to get rid of the Coding Main Catagory and just keep:

---General Coding Forum
---Chimeric (talk about the website)
---another code specific site
---General Music and Sound
---Nali City
---UTBuilder
---Model Farm

This setup will allow you to see all new post markers, since they fall under one main catagory: --Level Designs, Coding, Models and Sound (which is not a forum, but Main page that lists all the forums in it)

However, my concern is Chimeric or related sites would be swallowed up in that catagory and Coders would not see Chimeric or related sites as a Coding site hosted here.

So the trade off is:

Put Chimeric's forum (which is about discussing site related topics) in a sub main forum; "Coding". This will not let people see new post markers until they click on "Coding". Once they click on "Coding", a list of all coding sites and the merged General Coding forum will appear.

NOTE: If you click on BeyondUnreal now, and scroll down, you will see "Coding". Notice it is gray (no icon to the left) and no new post markers. You would have to click on the "Coding" link to see all the forums inside it and the new post markers.

Or, put Chimeric in the "Level Designs, Coding, Models and Sound" main catagory. This will allow people to see every forum and the new post markers (the "Coding" sub main forum will be gone).

NOTE: Again, click on BeyondUnreal and scroll down. See "Technical"? That is a main forum page catagory. Yet you can see all the forums listed under "Technical" and the new post markers (except Coding)

With this method, people will see:

--Level Designs, Coding, Models and Sound (Main Page...not a forum)
---General Coding Forum
---Chimeric (talk about the website)
---another code specific site (discussions about site related topics)
---General Music and Sound
---Nali City
---UTBuilder
---Model Farm

and all the new post markers. However, Chimeric would not be seen as being associated specifically with coding. Yet, people will see new post markers. It's a trade off, but something for the appropriate mods to consider.

Yes, one coding forum - good. Put the CHiMERiC website forum wherever you think best, and I'll just add a link to that. And eventually we'll get the WoD forum merged here too.

Then we can move on to other more interesting discussions. :)

Prophetus

This won't happen soon, but it COULD be the next step. However, we do want the moderators, of every forum, to give their inputs.

Whent the time comes, I'll post the thread in the Beyond Unreal Headquarters forum. After all the inputs and discussion are finalized, we can move within an agreed date.

Thanks for your inputs guys/gals:).
