As I am graduating from MSU at the end of the year and plan to attend a paralegal institute next year in the Twin Cities (not sure which school yet), I will be relocating to the Twin Cities next year, or possibly the year after. Knowing the Twin Cities like I'm sure you know the Twin Cities, where would a poor young fancy lad like myself be best off living? I'd like to split a one-bedroom apartment with my nephew (yes, we will sleep naked, on top of one another, with our pubic bushes meshing) and live in a not-too-risky neighborhood. I heard Burnsville isn't a bad area as far as crime and cost-of-living. Do you recommend a particular area of Minneapolis/St. Paul or a particular suburb? Better yet, a particular apartment complex? Are there areas I should avoid? My nephew used to live in St. Paul, West St. Paul, and crackheads broke into his car because it looked as if there was a CD face under his seat. I am not down with that boolean bool****. Let me know what's up, and thank you for your time ;)

South Minneapolis all the way, baby! I've been living in south Minneapolis for a good 5 years and love it. As far as crime goes, for the most part the Twin Cities is a clean place, but there are certainly a couple "iffy" neighborhoods. Of course, friends of mine from Chicago would say "Ha ha ha ha!!!!"
The best thing about a lot of places in south Minneapolis is that there's a misconception that crime is a problem there, so rental prices stay fairly reasonable in a part of town that isn't any more crime-ridden than the 'burbs. That, and you're closer to the cool sh!t downtown and in Uptown. I'd avoid getting an apartment that's right on major streets like Chicago, Cedar, Park, Bloomington or Plymouth avenues. But, you'd be amazed how much better things get just a couple blocks away from these streets.
Do NOT live in Uptown, unless you want a tiny apartment for too much money and crappy parking and replace the words "crack heads" in the crime scenario you described with "suburban kids who think they're ganstas."
For a young, sexually adventurous lad such as yourself, I couldn't really recommend suburban living. You'd get bored fast. Life is much more fun closer to downtown.

Thank you, Sven, for taking time to answer my questions. I'm still not sure where you recommend I live as I don't know south from north when it comes to cities, but I take you it think I should find a (freakish, inner-city cult) complex some streets off a major avenue, like Hennepin (heard bad things about Hennepin ... from dumbarses) or Plymouth (heard bad things about Plymouth ... from dumbarses). Can you explain to me what Dinkytown is? I assume it's a little village-type district near the U, but I don't think I've ever been there. When ECW came to the cities in 2000, I went with a couple friends to the U of M Sports Pavillion, not well knowing my way around the cities, and I ended up on some island in St. Paul, at least, a middle-aged woman told me at one point, "You do know you're on an island, don't you?" Minneapolis is preferrable to St. Paul, yes? Don't get me wrong. I'm not that sexually adventurous of a lad, meaning I'm not one to dress up in drag or hit on men or anything like that (contrary to what some might believe after seeing the pic thread), so suburbia isn't too big of a turn-off, but I trust your wisdom in recommending south Minneapolis. I need my mommy to help me with all of this, that is, unless you are willing to do the work she would do, Sven, and for a zero-percent commission. What work would she do? Eh, I'm going somewhere with this and it probably has the term "kneepads" so I will quit now, doncha know?

Well, even if you're not sexually adventurous (pfft ... yeah right!) I'd still stay away from suburbia. Dull dull DULL life out there. Also, typically the affordable rental property in the 'burbs are almost little ghettos within themselves, not terribly different from living in so-called "bad" neighborhoods.
Also, I honestly wouldn't worry much about avoiding these supposed "bad" neighborhoods. Most of the people saying that are either suburban or small town dwellers who, frankly, know little to nothing of the city =).
Your perception of Dinkytown is correct. Lots of popular rental places around there, too, and mostly college people. Worth looking into, I'd say.
Also, don't restrict yourself to apartment complexes. Sometimes you can get a good deal on the upper level of a house that's been converted to a duplex or 4-plex or something like that. Sometimes you get more room for less money that way and always more character. Just *feels* a little more like a home.

My nephew used to live "eight blocks off Lake Street." Familiar with this area, Sven? Not somewhere I want to live and store my valuables. I like the idea of living in an upper-floor duplex if it means less money and I don't have to worry about fixing something myself as I would were I to rent the whole house. Dinkytown is a bit dangerous, innit? I guess I have little to fear. *points to biceps; biceps slump downward like Popeye foe*

No, Skorch, Ye of Ol' Poofy Mulletdom, no one has said "pathetic friggin' homos" because, well, why would someone say such a thing?

A) Lake Street is a long street. Some parts of it are a little more run-down than others, and some parts are downright yuppie-ish.
B) I don't think anybody really has anything to worry about with the whole "crime-ridden city, OMG!!!" thing. It's a bunch of suburbia/small town hype. People think it's dangerous 'cause you actually have to lock your doors. Ooh ... gee, I'm *so* scared. I've seen more crime in small town North Dakota at times than in Minneapolis, and Dinkytown = dangerous?
C) Act scared, and locals will fuk with ya and make fun of ya just 'cause ... I know *I* would ;)

Sorry, I'm from the stix...perhaps you should all learn a few things about our zones before you proceed...
...the debate about gun permits never applied here...we have always been able to carry pistols, and the permit is 12.50 for 5 years..
...we hunt...not for trophies, but to fill our freezers...the venison you pay so much for in NY is a staple of a lot of us in the woodz...
...we're poor...not "we can't eat" poor, but "I will never own a new car" poor...
...we have 3 major colleges here, blowing away the belief that "education is the answer"...
...we do not do drugz, for the most part...who the hell can afford them?
...I have worked in the fields, loading docks and factories since I was 12...
...this is why those of us in "flyover country" are so damn huge...survival...
have a good time making fun of this...

Grew up in the Stix: Solen, ND, pop 137. I'm fully aware of what life is like both in the "big city" and in the back of beyond ;)
As far as the "we don't do drugs" thing, open your eyes to the cheap, meth lab reality of rural America.

North Dakota is a prime example of how good education in one state doesn't necessarily benefit the state itself. Everybody in ND gets an above-average education, but nobody stays 'cause outside of Microsoft: Great Plains in Fargo and a bunch of gas pumping jobs, there's not a whole lot of money-making to be had. Then again, you can't get much out of a state with roughly the same population as the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul combined =) (roughly 600,000 people)
You know why they say everyone in ND is so nice? Hell, they're just glad to see another human being!!! =P
