I have been to several LAN parties, and while there was a cover charge..20 for 72 hours of T3 access..(most likely hacked into) and beer and sodas.. most of the peeps that I saw there were
GEEKS.. and I don't mean the "good kind" I tend to think of myself as a ComputerGeek (tm) or even a Guru to some.. but these were the kinda kids that will live at home to 35 and get hitched to the first piece that they DON'T have to pay for..
If there was some drug use at any of the parties that I have been to.. it was VERY mild.. and it wasn't the reason for being there..

yeah. but in this artcle it says that we are some kind of a mutated human living from beer, drugs and the gaming. living from porn and stealing(warezing) software. cant they get it that we play a bit and have fun? i mean meeting his friedns in a pub jsut to chat and drink alcohol isnt a crime. and no one writes about it. but cos these ****heads know nothing about gaming we have to be criminal... tss. I never had alcohol on a LAN. and most of the LANs are always with "No alcohol & no drugs". they sell mostly good food there(far better than mcD or BK).

if you were tripping it's unlikely you'd be able to focus for long enough to plug the console into the TV.. you'd probably get too distracted by the pretty patterns on the wallpaper

Those articles arnt nearly as derogatory as some i've seen...but it is of course a blatent lie. LAN partys are no more drug fuelled than any others, probably less so infact because people have something specific to do.

I've been to several LANs. I think it's common to have beer at some of 'em ... close 2nd would be people smoking weed (to which I say, big fukin' deal ...)

For the most part, they're about playing the damn game with your buddies. Can you imagine the flaming Salon.com would get if they had a link to a forum about this article??? Unless I missed it...

Prince Charles has called for lottery money to be spent on enticing schoolchildren away from computer games to theatre and the arts.

Charles said he hoped he would not "get in trouble" for saying it but the people spending lottery proceeds should be "more imaginative" in helping young people have access to the performing arts.

Speaking in the Round Reading Room at the British Museum in London, the Prince spoke about the battle against video games and a need to "expand the minds and fire the imagination" of children.

The event was to celebrate the completion of the Everyman Millennium Library project, which distributes copies of the great classics of literature to schools around Britain.

Charles said: "None of us can underestimate the importance of books in an age dominated by the computer screen and the constant wish for immediate gratification."

He continued: "One of the great battles we face today is to persuade our children away from the computer games towards what can only be described as worthwhile books."

The Prince used the reception, hosted by the Millennium Commission, to call for more help for young people to enjoy the arts.

He said: "I hope I won't get into trouble for saying this but having seen the Millennium Commission achieve this particularly imaginative scheme (the Everyman project), why can't the Millennium Commission or the lottery think about an even more imaginative scheme which would enable many more children to witness the best theatre, music and other performing arts.

"Just allow them to experience it. We have got the money through the lottery, I think many new generations of schoolchildren would be allowed access."

A worthy goal, but throwing money at the problem and scapegoating won't get him anywhere.

Those mass geekathons look about as appealing as a 80 year old leperous whore.

well, I think its good to bring those little kids back to the arts. I mean there arent much kids that can handle an pencil right? they cant really draw anymore. and music. i see all these "hip hopers" who think a dull backbeat and a gangster-nigga from tha bronX is everything you need for good music. I love classical music. especially piano music. but also rock and msuci with some real instruments. We will loose soemthing in life when we lose all these traditional arts. Saying that we have to get them away from video games is not the right way.

I think its shukld be so that the kids that jsut try to be hip and are swiming with the stream(thats actually translated friom german, i hope you get it) should get a chance to do something with arts. its cool to create something. and its even much cooler to create something with your friends. those aggressive hip hop rhymes of retarded rappers are jsutt destructive!

Prince Charles doesn't know what the hell he's talking about, that's the obvious thing I've discovered from that little speech. I think kids should be encouraged to participate in the things that excite them and not be made to feel that they're someone deprived or even stupid 'cause they'd rather play a video game than read a book.

A good video game can be very much akin to a good book, in my opinion. It's the next form of communication and entertainment and, when you get down to it, most books are nothing but frivolous entertainment. Does he think that if we encourage kids to read instead of playing computer games that they'll all go out and buy up copies of Plato's Republic? Are we going to see kids put down game controllers in favor of the collected works of Jane Austin? Hey-all no!

If I were a parent and my child was very much interested in video games (much like myself as a kid) I'd encourage video game-related educational activities. Teach them how to make cool pictures in Photoshop, teach them how to use UEd or *gasp* Radient/Worldcraft/QuArK. Teach them 3D Stuido Max. Give them Web space and let them loose on making a gaming site for their friends.

Also, they're just fukin' kids! Let them have their fun. Sometimes a kid wants to just play his video game. He shouldn't spend his whole day doing so, and other activities should be encouraged, but Charlie's acting like it's a dangerous narcotic or something.

Charles: chill, dude. Toke up and pop in a game of Sonic Adventure or something then rethink your plolicy on video games and kids.
