all these 8 bit games are very well :) but the ultimate antique game has yet to be brought up. Maybe the graphics are too hot for you to handle, but hasnt anyone played elite? imho the best game ever (for its time ). So if you want to prove yourself a truly l33t elite playing l33t gamer, you must answer these questions.
1) What ship in elite was banned for being too deadly?
2) What rank came above "above average" in the rankings?
3) What type of government ruled the Lave system?

Hmm, some pre-Wolfenstein-id-games:
1.) What was the name of the Alien race that wanted to take over the galaxy in Commander Keen 4&5?
2.) The first enemy type you met in Keen 4 were yellow slugs. You could get killed by touching them and...?
3.) How could you finish Keen 5?
4.) Who was the person you had to rescue in Keen 6?

I just can remember the extra mission in DOOM2 where you at least have to kill commander keen : )

The Aliens in Keen 4 & 5 were called the Shikadi, I think.
I only played it 'cause I got it free with some peripheral.

urgh, don't mention that sub platform nonsense in the same thread as the god-like Elite
if you've not played it or it's sequals then point your browers to google and play "find the file"

It was the one "obscure old game" that came to my mind 'cause I got it with my first computer and played through it dunnohowmany times...of course it's nonsense, but it was very funny, nontheless :D
Shouldn't be a comparison to Elite which was certainly ahead of its time but which I haven't played yet, unfortunately :(

I must concur. Elite ( not its sequles, although they were much better than the original imho ) was the most ground breaking game ever. It invented 3D, the simulation and open-endedness all in one go :\

Trying to work out how not to make the mission crash :p
(assuming you applied the 'bug fix ' to the game which actually introduced new and exciting bugs but actually made it possible to buy a new ship without crashing the game)
FFE tarnished the series for ever.

True it was buggier than a whores panties :)
Frontier had that cool 'sell your ship with passengers onboard and get the money but keep the ship' bug... class 3 military drive & plasma cannon here we come :D
I remember ****ing around with the crash hyperspace on that game and ending up several thousand light years off in the top of the map... I saw the strangest looking ship but it got away from meh before I could id it
that game was so cool

It'd be a lot easier if you just downloaded the PC version. And no, don't ask me where you can find it....

FFE was a phenomenal game, but the bugs ruined it. There were just too many to remember, and the plot was poor, but the detail and sheer scope are unsurpassed. There were 5 different newspapers each of which had a specific weekly edition for about 5 years of game time ( I once called New Scientist 'universal scientist' ) and every star in the galaxy was visitable.

Privateer2 The darkening
a fairly reasonable stab at a 'baby elite' with a plot
very cool game, but would it run on winXP? :(

while we're (sort of) on the subject of ancient obscure 3D flight games, anyone remember mercenary for the C64?
15 minute load times aside, that game kicked ass.

Well, how many of you have actually finished Dune 2 - Battle for Arrakis? I remember having sat there for hours selecting unit by unit... No drag-select that time, no no!

Yep, finished that one :) I hadn't played any other RTS game at the time so I wasn't put off by the lack of features.
The last RTS game I played through was Starcraft....I was impressed by the balance of the three very different forces. But lately, RTS games have gone downhill IMO, with nothing innovative left to offer.
/me awaits "C&C 7: Slightly Different Tanks" with trepidation :p
