NC3 is closer than you think. If I wasn't about to leave town for New Years, I'd tell you just how close(r). Instead, I have another discussion for you.

Boxing is not a sport.

12-25-2001 11:00 pm - BangOut Grandma got gas from eggnog
Merry Christmas! :)
12-20-2001 02:16 pm - BangOut It's an update.
Some quick news from the head honchos: The BeyondUnreal server (Asia) will be down next Sunday morning, 12-23-01, from about 8:00 AM ET to about 8:30 AM ET (if all goes as expected) so we can upgrade her Linux kernel.

Clarification: The server is not in Asia. The server is named Asia. Asia is the name of a famous UT player you may or may not have heard of. Thank you.

As hackr duly noted, things are slow around here but I pollute the forums and IRC channel just enough to keep things somewhat lively. Some of the polls I started in the forums recently include: what is the best Christmas movie ever?, what does LOL stand for?, how good was Lord of the Rings?, and how bad is the Spiderman movie going to be?

I saw the Lord of the Rings movie last night and it was freaky good. Out of three hours of movie gazing, I didn't have many complaints and raving about the good things they did in the movie would take paragraphs. (My favorite part: The Matrix's Agent Smith as Elrond the pointy eared elf guy) All I can say is that if you have a pulse, this movie is one you have to go see in the theater for the full effect. Don't wait for the dinky VHS version in 6 months so you can watch it on a tiny television screen.

Nothing much is happenning in our IRC channel (#nalicity irc.enterthegame.com) but I have been answering Twenty Questions: The NC3 Edition for anyone who's that curious. Some highlights: "Question: Will this shiny new dollar make my map's review score better" "Answer: Tempting, but no." Also, the correct answers to the above poll questions are (in order): National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, laughing out loud, it was fantastic, very bad. Feel free to go vote to inflate the results.

12-17-2001 03:03 pm - hackr86 I'm bored.
So I'm bored and now that I have a forum to the world where I can post some crap, I've decided to do so. We all need humour don't we?!
So yea, last night, an interview I did with a Canadian TV channel, CTV, was aired. The topic was breakups and such. It was pretty damn cool. I'm getting videos made, thank goodness my school has the digital capturing stuff. Check me out here if you're interested to see. I'll throw in a quick pic of the interview setting since, yes, I'm bored.
Other news...hmm, NC3 is evolving. Don't ask me how much and such because frankly, I don't know. Also, Happy Chanukah to any Jewish surfers who visit NC, and as well, Merry Christmas to all. Heck, let's be politically correct and says Seasons Greetings! Don't flame me for writing this, in doing so, I'm just trying to give you something to read, even though it may not be that much. Peace...

hackr is on the left...

12-14-2001 03:39 pm - hackr86 Yes, we are alive.
Good day everyone. This is my first posting with the new system and such. Just want to make sure that you know we are still alive.

I don't know about everyone else, but the last update on NC for my comp is the one done on the 27th by QA. In the database is one by Twrecks, which I don't think was 'built.' If it was, and you can see it, then please ignore the following. If not, please take the time to read:

I put a temporary NaliCity Reviewers' Page up and to date have 39 maps pending review when the new review template gets released!

The NCRP page allows us reviewers to reserve maps, and prevents dupes when there are so many maps that can be chosen from. Yoda tells me that it will be made Dynamic for NC3, whether or not we'll let the public see it...

This concludes my test of the "new" news php. I'll be back soon with real news and reviews, and as QAPete hinted, a new left side bar once things get rolling.

Bangout and I want to make sure you know that we are both still alive and well, you can find us in #nalicity on ETG whenever. Luq's doing good in his new digs and work continues for NC3 by QAPete, Yoda and Clambert. Be patient. Very close now my darlings.

Once we get back up darlings, this place will 0wn some hardcore ass! Until then, have a good one folks.

11-27-2001 07:14 am - QAPete Quickie Update Time
Here ya go with your official Nali City status update for the day:

1) The file corruption problem has been temporarily corrected, as we've pointed our UT map downloads at our eDome mirror. Thanks incredibly much to Varpu and the gang at eDome for doing the UT community a huge service!

2) The Unreal 1 files have been mirrored, and we should be getting around to activating the Unreal 1 links shortly.

3) Work on FileRing continues, and yes, you'll be seeing the RRCFL mirror again there, along with other viable mirrors for NC files.

4) As you can see by yesterday's post, we're reassembling the NC admin team, and should be getting back to our regular updates shortly. Personally, I'm going to pester them to get a new MOTW and hotlist posted... ;-)

Really, the bottom line is we could do this quick, or do this right. We've taken time away from getting *this* version of NC fully functional again in order to put in some work on the next revision of the site, which we feel will be a lot more valuable to the community (and will get us ready for U2 files). We're looking forward to bringing that to you soon!
11-26-2001 01:53 am - BangOut Wowza!
Hi :) Yeah, I'm still here it's just that as the 'stuff' was hitting the fan last month I couldn't really say anything about us moving and after that, there wasn't much news to report. It has come to my repeated attention that everyone wants some sort of update on what's going on and it's only fair that we give you some idea of what we're doing rather than leaving people posting polls in the BBS about when NC3 is coming out. :)

I'll make it short but sweet so as not to drive my fellow admins buggy about the job they're doing (because I'm not coding or designing because I am skill-less). The user interface is coming along and working well under the guise of Yoda's PHP magic, the redesign is being done by someone outside of NC and while the styles have changed since what you first saw many many moons ago it is looking quite nice, and be sure to shower some love on Varpu for getting a working mirror for all of our files up and running. 1337.

I have updated the #nalicity IRC stats. Truth be told, it's been quiet in there lately which is obviously somehwat due to us not updating but a few of us are always around. The stats are a little skewed... Hourences is the real blabber mouth in there. :D Speaking of which, Team Phalanx currently has a few maps on our Hot List and they are all working on new maps of their own; Hourences just released a SP level called Ortican and is working on a small masterpiece called CTF-Raid while Mr. Prophet is hours away from releasing the dark and spooky DM-Imago. Ulukai is working on two CTF maps and both are looking good as well. Plus, Platinum recently released DM-Decifer. Why am I pimping them? Because they are mappers and they make their maps known in IRC (irc.enterthegame.com #nalicity) where I happen to hang out. Feel free to stop by anytime to see what's going on. Smell it.

Last but not least, just reminding you that all of our e-mails have changed and not all links are right where should be just yet. While our upload FTP is currently filling up quickly, some of you may be having problems and our FTP page does not relfect our post-move information. If you have any questions or concerns about what's going on, feel free to mail me at my new address at bangout@beyondunreal.com or post something in the BBS.

11-21-2001 07:54 am - Yoda Status Update
Sorry about the lack of updates, but I've been busy working on NC3.

Things are going very well. Soon, soon.
11-19-2001 07:14 am - QAPete Mirroring Status
I have a little update for you all. First off, we are making some headway re: corrupted .zip files on the RoadRunner mirrors. About 600 of 'em are fixed, and the other 600 are there, but in the wrong directories (big, cheesy grin). Our little mirroring script developed a brain tumor at some point. We'll have that corrected in short order, I'm hoping.

Second, we've begun the process of mirroring to our friends at eDome in Finland! Thanks much to Varpu and Mika for providing this invaluable service to the community! We're already working on the new version of FileRing, so once the mirroring is complete to eDome, it shouldn't be too long before you have a selection of mirrors to choose from.

One note: GSI has changed the forwarder for the PU Nali City address. They had been forwarding to this address, but are now redirecting to PU's main page. As a result, there are many people who don't know where we are. I'd take it as a personal favor if you could all do some word-of-mouth and redirect people here.

Thank you for your patience as we retool Nali City to provide you with the very best place to obtain Unreal / UT maps and reviews. We have other things in store for you too - just stay tuned!
11-13-2001 06:25 am - FuzzBuster promises, promises...
New maps posted, reports on bad files, status updates, and immediately thereafter, an updated "30-days of maps" list... as promised. :-)

Now I get to dig deep into the remaining cleanup of the maps database; what few 'unknowns' are left and still need to be classified, etc. prior to splitting the table into separate authors and maps info so that we can move forward with NC 3.

In between bouts of that, I'll work on getting the new Review template up and running so we can get you some new reviews.. I'm sure our review staff is just champing at the bit to post some new goodies for you. :-) (frankly I'm eager to post a few myself... it's been a while.) Don't forget to cast your vote in the poll we have, regarding user-feedback! (see my previous post)

Bear in mind, as we keep mentioning: downloads are still wonky. The new maps won't show up on the mirror until it's fully up and running again. As soon as we know, you'll know. That, is also a promise.

11-13-2001 03:22 am - FuzzBuster In a word, "BOOM."
Well, we've got a huge amount of things to talk about in this special time we've taken together this morning.

First off we have a little poll going in the NC forums that you'll want to check out, regarding the user-feedback to reviews. Please respond; we need your opinions with regards to this.

Second, there's LOTS of new maps, which you'll see down at the bottom. Please bear in mind, that these downloads will not work, until the mirror is back online and functional again! They are all posted and in the database, so as soon as the mirror is working, they'll be available. Be assured, we WILL post immediately as soon as this has occurred!

The 'Daily Map Packs' are, for the forseeable future, not going to be used. The simple reason is that we don't want to over-stress the site and mirrors quite yet. Those of you who are map-hogs will have to cherry-pick for the time being. I'd love to give them to you but I don't want to max out QAPete's budget and then have to explain it to him! (at least not unless I have a good escape route planned) :-)

From the recent raft of uploads, the following maps have been rejected by virtue of having NO readme file. Authors of these maps are politely suggested to use the Template Generator, and re-submit.

From the recent raft of uploads, the following maps have been rejected by virtue of having been named the same as another map by a completely different author, that already exists in our database. These authors are hereby requested to thrash themselves about the head and shoulders with a wet clue-by-four, after which they should re-name their map (both internally and externally!), AFTER having searched the database to see that the NEW name is not ALSO taken. =:P

From the recent raft of uploads, the following maps are updated versions of the originals. Kudos to the authors of these maps for 'doing the right thing' and continuing to fix bugs and make improvements to their level designs. <applause>

ctf-magickingdomzii_v2.zip
ctf-firezone102.zip - which I received even as I was preparing to upload version 101; apparently a last minute bug was caught and squashed.
And so, (dusting off my shirt and rubbing some of the coding grease off my hands with a stray rag), without further ado, I present to you...

11-11-2001 01:30 am - FuzzBuster a brief emergence..
The map recently uploaded 'ctf-8_of-space][-ig.zip' is corrupt. Please re-send the file. Thanks :-) I also still have not gotten the replacement for 'dm-ktb-bar.zip', and I wish you'd re-send that one too.

All the others received were fine, although I truely wish that authors would use the readme template generator, or at least tell me what's missing from it so I can add to the to-do list and make changes to it, when I get to that point. *sigh* so much half-assed badly formatted info... ;-) anyway...

Keep 'em coming. I got 'em, and as soon as the mirror is functioning again, we'll have downloads again. Regrettably the problem is on their end and not ours. We've checked out all the zip files, believe me, and replaced corrupted ones (which were few and far between) with backups. I'm pre-scanning everything here, so there won't be any problems on this end.

11-9-2001 07:36 pm - FuzzBuster regarding new maps...
I'm just about ready to finish up the batch-import utility, as I now have a working MapScanner and a completed batch of the near-200 new maps in my new_maps/ directory. I have a few problem maps though, so I'll post about them here.

Would the authors of these maps, please go and use the UT ReadMe Template Generator and take the map-zip that it generates, and add your maps/textures/etc. to it, and re-submit that file? Thanks a bunch. This will go a long long long way towards keeping the database clean so that I can take it forward to the next generation NaliCity more easily.

I'm going to be posting these as soon as I work the kinks out of the batch-import util, and can see that it's working properly on the test database. You will still likely have to wait a bit for them until the mirror issue gets cleared up but I want to get these maps up there so that they can be mirrored as soon as possible. Nothing would suck more than having the mirror finally working and all these maps still not there yet.

Still, steady progress is being made, even if most of it is under-the-hood stuff you don't see as easily.

I've also been continuing to clean up stray missing images from the old reviews.. I've seen that some reviews in the database are missing pics which should definitely not be happening, but haven't had the time to look seriously into it and write up a perl script to check for them for me. I'll get to that in a bit. Bear with me. Some things have a higher priority -- like Maps :-)

11-9-2001 06:11 am - QAPete Corrupted Files
Hey, guys. Just checking in with a little update here. We are aware that some of the files on the RoadRunner mirror are corrupted .zips. Right now, there is nothing we can do about it, but we've contacted RR CFL to establish a full mirroring relationship.

You see, the files we're linking to are those that existed during the brief beta run for FileRing over at PU. This, out of necessity, as GSI has decided not to maintain linkage we can use here for mirroring.

We understand that this is a pain for you all, but please bear in mind that we're working on our own mirroring system (this is not small potatoes), and will have a much more elegant solution for mirrors when that is completed. When will that be? Can't say for sure, stay tuned here for updates.
11-7-2001 09:51 am - FuzzBuster Alive from off center
MY this is fun. Seeing all the hard work slowly turning around and working out into something that works better than it ever did before. What? Oh, you want to see it too? well, then. Some good news.

First off it looks like Yoda got the bug in the news fixed. This is good.

I think we got the file donwload links working with the mirrored site now. FileRing is still in the works, but you should be able to download now.

Also, I have almost 200 new maps to upload now. Very soon. In fact, as soon as I work some last bugs out of the batch-scan utility with Yoda, and complete the changes to the batch-import utility. :-) IMMEDIATELY after that's done, I'll revise my report tool and re-generate the "30-day" list. You'll see the report here in the news as well, and we'll also have a daily pack for you at that time; possibly broken into 2-3 chunks to make the download easier for you map-hogs. :-)

Immediately following that, I'll be finishing up the review template for posting new reviews to the database. User-Feedback is still taking a back-seat to those two things, but will follow shortly thereafter, I promise.

Transitions are hard. I'd much rather be out enjoying the weather this time of year, which is one of my favorite seasons.

Please excuse the mess and help us out by reporting any problems or errors you may be witnessing. I know there's a lot of broken link-images in the reviews -- this has more to do with the case-sensitivity of unix than anything else. In between bouts of working on the code, I peek at the error-log and run in and fix a few images at a time. Eventually we'll get them all.

There's just so many little details... *sigh* ... We're getting there. Please be patient.

11-4-2001 01:39 am - FuzzBuster GoGo Gadget BitchSlap!!
The UT ReadMe Template Generator is now back online, with a few changes. It now generates .zip files (!) instead of the .tgz's I was forced to do originally, due to the lack of a Zip creation module on the original site. w00p! I love this stuff. =8) Give it a spin. I've made a few tiny changes to the format, but there's still more to do on the rest of the site, so the remaining upgrades I am going to make to it will have to wait just a bit. Still, it's up, it works, please report all bugs to me directly, and also I'd appreciate further suggestions to add to my to-do list for it.

I've got about 185 maps here, primed for upload, but what with the mirroring problems we're having (see yesterday's news) it may be a little bit before you're able to download them. Rest assured I'll post any problems with your uploads immediately. I'll be posting some updated guidelines to the "Submit Files (FTP)" page for you, to enhance what's already there, in the next day or three, as I progress with the other admin stuff I've been working feverishly on.

updated 11/06/2001 - *grumble* I modified my news post and now the earlier items can't be seen even though they still exist. looks like another bug needs shaking out. I've messaged Yoda about it, hopefully we'll have a fix shortly.

11-3-2001 07:20 pm - QAPete Files Removed By GameSpy
As of some time today, GameSpy has removed all of the files from the FTP server that we have linked to for the past three years.

As I stated yesterday, we are working on our own file mirroring solution, which had a beta run on the PU version of Nali City, called FileRing. The BeyondUnreal version of this system is not ready yet, and I'm not certain as to when it will be completed. We ask your patience.

Rest assured: we will have multiple mirrors for Unreal and UT maps, as well as upcoming maps for Unreal 2 and Unreal Warfare, and Nali City will rise up from all of this to become, again, the center of the Unreal-engine mapping community.

UPDATE: We have a temporary mirror up for nearly all of the Unreal Tournament maps courtesy of the nice guys from Central Florida Road Runner (http://www.cfl.rr.com/). We'll be working to acquire additional mirrors and a proper download system over the next few days. Thank you for your patience.

11-2-2001 07:47 pm - QAPete Welcome!
Welcome to Nali City, hosted now on BeyondUnreal. The new URL is http://nalicity.beyondunreal.com.

There are a few things you should know about the site as it is, and as it will be. Let's start with what led up to this.

After I, along with my friends, started up BeyondUnreal, beginning with our forums, GameSpy disabled all of our accesses to the PU Nali City. Soon after, they decided that, rather than continue to host Nali City (my site) on PU, they'd rather just cut the ties and eliminate the site from PlanetUnreal.

While we've managed to get things pretty much back together, there are a couple of things to note. First, some of the links won't work yet. We know, and we're working on BeyondUnreal replacements for some of the stuff. GSI has forced the timing of this move to BU, so we're doing some catching up.

Second, the download links are still pointing to FilePlanet, but I was informed by GSI that they will be moving ALL of the Unreal and UT files off the current FTP server. They may or may not continue to host the files that we have. So, unless they do and we are given the ability to link to the existing maps, we won't have a file mirror until we get our own mirroring system set up. Also, unless GSI agrees to work out some arrangement where we can 'push' files to FilePlanet automatically, new files will not be made available until we get our mirroring system set up. The timing of our mirroring system is 'when it's done'. Please, asking won't expedite the process. We want it to be good.

Third, this is just a copy of Nali City from PU, with some tweaks. We are working on NC 3, which is being rewritten from the ground up. No timing on that yet, but we'll be ready long before U2 and UW come out.

Finally, the forums have been recreated from scratch. We may (or may not) try to import the old forum posts - we're currently looking into doing that. In the interim, visit the Nali City forums over at BeyondUnreal.

In closing, I want you guys to know that the admin team here is 100% committed to getting NC fully online within the least amount of time with the best features. I started this site three years ago, and I'm not going to see it crumble. We have very big plans for Nali City, and they include you!

Hi Yeah, I'm still here it's just that as the 'stuff' was hitting the fan last month I couldn't really say anything about us moving and after that, there wasn't much news to report. It has come to my repeated attention that everyone wants some sort of update on what's going on and it's only fair that we give you some idea of what we're doing rather than leaving people posting polls in the BBS about when NC3 is coming out.

Speaking of which, Team Phalanx currently has a few maps on our Hot List and they are all working on new maps of their own; Hourences just released a SP level called Ortican and is working on a small masterpiece called CTF-Raid while Mr.

Authors of these maps are politely suggested to use the Template Generator, and re-submit.

dm-ktb-livingrm.zip
dm-ktb-backyard.zip
dm-ktb-bathroom.zip
dm-ktb-redeem.zip

From the recent raft of uploads, the following maps have been rejected by virtue of having been named the same as another map by a completely different author, that already exists in our database. These authors are hereby requested to thrash themselves about the head and shoulders with a wet clue-by-four, after which they should re-name their map (both internally and externally!), AFTER having searched the database to see that the NEW name is not ALSO taken. =:P

dm-cityarena.zip
dm-hydroelectric.zip
dm-killbox.zip
From the recent raft of uploads, the following maps are updated versions of the originals. Kudos to the authors of these maps for 'doing the right thing' and continuing to fix bugs and make improvements to their level designs. <applause>

sh-urban][.zip
ctf-magickingdomzii_v2.zip
ctf-firezone102.zip - which I received even as I was preparing to upload version 101; apparently a last minute bug was caught and squashed.
