View Full Version : Not sure...

I don't know whether to write this off as in interesting experiment.. it's tiny, so a bot will occasionally get a spawnkill, and every effort I make to put an extra area in at the moment turns out crap. (Surely the forum doesn't censor "crap"?)

It looks like Afghanistan.. but it's actually where they found the dead sea scrolls.

I can understand what you mean about being not sure. The map itself looks great, and I love the addition of the ladder and the curves on the ledges really finish it off.
Something i smissing though, and im not sure what. At first I thought the size, but this is fine for a 1v1. How about a few more obsticles on the bottom section, something to dodge between, like some large crates, or rubble. Perhaps this might help, and I think the addition of music would also help a hell of a lot! Try it

(Hehe, another map with gameplay DavidM will dislike)
okedokee, I'll try some more stuff. I forgot all about music.. I think it needs something from Indiana Jones :) Any feedback from anyone appreciated.

Guess i've never played a 1x1 map b4, didn't know there was such a genre. I think this map looks great though, all the curves without any noticeable bsp stuff really helps it look real. and i agree i thought the ladder was a real nice touch, though the bot couldn't get up it, just stood at the bottom jumping and getting nowhere.
Noticed i was casting a shadow up in the top chamber, that's different, but cool. The rope seems overly bright for the surroundings. If you're looking for more obstacles in the bottom area, how about a muddy puddle/pool just deep enough that you have to flounder and jump your way back out of it? Wouldn't have to be toxic, just enough to be distracting if you fall into it during melee ...
Having not played any original Unreal, i still am fascinated by the moveable stuff (like crates in Quake) like shiny stuff to a crow i guess, because the first half of the first game i kept getting fragged as i was moving the pottery around .. i figured out you can put one of the lying-down ones at the bottom of the incline, then push others on top of it ... i had a small stack going when i got alt-sawbladed from behind and the impact pushed onto the stack and they all broke, heh ;)
i agree the right music would go a long way further in the ambience direction. cool little map.

music, was also hearing something Israeli or arabic sounding, not sure where you'd find such a thing, but it'd be cool.

When I tested the map I reguarly saw the bot climb the ladders. Just thought id point that out. It may have been due to it following me though!
After playing it again, I have decided that I like it... whats missing is the atmosphere, which im sure you can fix Nach

Hmm, a google search turned up nothing but inspiration...
this (http://www.geocities.com/tempnach/corduroy.zip) would be perfect (790K, it's a snippet of the most arabic thing from my CD collection). I may whip out SoundForge and ModPlug in the next week.

neat ... sounds like a cross between Al Dimeola and Maynard Ferguson or something ... I've never converted an existing song using ModPlug b4, seems like a lot of work, but i should probably learn how to do it.
anyway, that cut would sound great in your map ...

Thanks all for the feedback.
Balton: The lights are there, but there aren't many. Maybe they're set to hidden in the groups browser? I used to get that problem all the time - when I didn't know what it was.
Navboy: I tried tracking that song... what a nightmare, and the file size would be huge. If I can get access to my brother's studio I may try to reproduce it... Corduroy have been ripped off by so much stuff on british TV anyway...
BaSe: I agree it needs more obstacles. After much beard stroking and raking of gravel, I added... one large crate. I think it's just about right now, I'll get a second Beta up when I finish off the sound.
