Works just fine for me.

2.47GB free HD after a full install (13GB drive)
I run in software 640x480, 16-bit, World Text and Skin Tex HIGH, min frame 20, Decals and Lighting ON (No decals appear in software BTW so OFF might give a boost).
This gives perfectly smooth gameplay under all circumstances I have encountered. Could obviously be tweaked. I heard 32-bit at a lower res works similarly.

As for online, I haven't tried but with the demo running over AOL's network (software in background) I had decent gameplay. Not great but decent. I imagine more tweaks and a better ISP would yield as good as offline play.

I don't understand why everyone needs such high resolutions. I played Unreal at 800x600 with a V2 on a 166MMX with 32MB and less HD space and it worked pretty well most of the time. Obviously a faster processor would have helped there.
Also I usually run Sp focused games at higher res in software because combat is brief and sporadic.

OpenGL, D3D, and driver issues seem to be at the root of most people's problems. If you want to enjoy the perks of full graphic glory when playing a game you should expect to have to run a more powerful setup (comment not directed at anyone in particular). Anyone who says this game doesn't perform well probably expecting all the glory without paying the price. Of course, GT is full of **** with the requirements on the box. A P200? 32MB(without a graphics card)? 120MB of HD? these are the specs for some machine of several years ago. Epic should do themselves a favor and make a game that won't run below 640x480 and on anything less than 64MB or a 1GB HD. Supporting such a low requirement at all, means that people will buy it, thinking they can enjoy a semblance of what the box portrays, which they can't. This simply breeds disappointment and anger.

i have 64 meg ram at the swapping from the HD is annoying
seems that all the people who say the game is great all have at least 128 ram
the game kicks a$$ if you got the system to run it, seems that way to me.
other then the swapping i gets 35fps at 800 with a 16 meg banshee p2 350 and 64 meg ram
no online probs with my cable modem either

Don't know what type of system you're runnin' but it works great on my system. Fantastic game, all around. I love all the game types. My system --> Celeron 400, NVidia Riva TNT (original, or TNT 1) with 3.53 Detonator drivers, SB Live! Value with 3.0 Liveware, 128 meg memory, run 640x480x16-bit color, medium skin detail, medium world detail, high sound quality, 3D sound and Surround Sound both off, decals and dynamic lighting on. Runs ~25fps steady.

So far haven't gone on-line..but this works in SP:

-Celly 300a o/c 338mhz.
-128 mb ram
-TNT2 Cougar w/32mb ram (Set at 1024x768 true colour 32 bit.. not the fastest frame rates but smooth enough for 2 bots)
-Creative Labs 8x CD rom
-Abit BX6 mobo
-Monster Mx300 sound

EASY_Target: Forget the 32 bit color set it back to 16 bit for speed (also set your deaktop to 16 bit). Now in options/preferences/video, change the "world detail", and "plaayer detail" to medium then go to the "HUD" section and move the "HUD Size" slider all the way to the left. Do all this and you will have your speed.

RW.. thanx..it is pretty laggy..you know almost all the servers I joined are bots...ugh!

Yeah I know but look in the server info box and see if they have bots enabled before you join.

Also I hear there is a way to disable the TNT pre-cache thing, maybe in advanced options/rendering/d3d so take a look as that will speed up the load times. Also in advanced options/advanced/game engine settings, set your "game engine cache" to at least 20MB from the default of 4MB and see if this helps.

Got one problem though..after being a "king" in Unreal ..it's kind of humiliating to feel like a "slave" in UT.. /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

Hell, I wouldn't wanna run Windows with 64mbRAM!! Voodoo still rules for UT though. A cable modem is very desirable, but a dial-up 56k is playable (tried both).
As for resolution, I find I don't want to use less than 800x600 and for Unreal I used 1200 sometimes(offline). It just feels like you're looking through a tube on those lower resolutions, and it helps me to see as much going on as possible.

I've had a bunch of problems, but I got things to work. Unfortunately, it's still pretty slow even at 640x480 with all detail set to low, etc. I think my main bottleneck is the low RAM, but frame rates of 20-25 still seems low on:

K6-2 350 (kept getting errors in the demo when oc's, haven't tried in retail yet)
64 MB
Diamond TNT2 Utlra 32 MB
SB Live

I just got the TNT2. Before I was running a Voodoo Banshee that was much smoother in the demo. I need to try it out in the retail and see how it is.

The real peculiar thing is, UT kept crashing (black screen - frozen) if audio was set to 22050 hz in advanced options. Once it was set to 11025 hz, all was good, but it's a waste to buy a new sound card if you can't use it.

Should I have stuck with the Banshee and SB AWE 32 (ISA - yeah it's old)?
How much do you think extra RAM will help?

You need another 64MB of ram for sure. Also look in the UT ini file and change the precache to false this will stop your TNT from precaching and seems to work well for others.

Pre-caching for TNT2
.. isn't this a requirement for the card... won't performance be effected?
..if someone knows of a link about this pre-caching stuff with some detailed info..it would be much appreciated.


I used to have 64mb ram and it sucked....the difference is like night and day..definite must ..especially with UT ...get total of 128mb ram..you won't be sorry, I think anything over 128 mb is not as beneficial as or as cost/performance effective.. the benefits for anything in excess of 128 mb are not as clearly realized or seen.

personly id go with a v3 3000 for UT but if your also in to the quake yes TNT2U is the way to do

128 mb ram will probably eliminate all your HD file swapping..also set up a virtual file at 150 mb..helps a lot!

Make sure your DMA is checked off under device manager/disc drive/settings..your HD will speed up dramatically for through putting data

I forgot to mention, the 64 MB I do have is 60 ns Simms, so I'm double screwed. I guess I'd better spend another $200+ on a 128 MB PC100 Dimm. Nothing like spending $500+ to play a $50 game /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

One more question on Virtual Memory: Should I set a min and max for virtual memory, or let windows manage it?

When I do get things running smoothly, I will thank you all with many frags!!

Set up a swap file of 180MB min, and 180MB max. Here is hoow to do that. BTW you can get 128MB PC 100 for 4148.99 over at http://www.computersupersale.com/ .

To setup a permanent swapfile for Windows 9x, right click on My Computer and select the Properties. You can also get here through the control panel by double clicking the System icon. Head over to the Performance tab, and select Virtual Memory. Since we are going for Maximum Tweakage, we are going to have to defrag your hard drive in order to create a defragged swapfile. Here's how to do it:

1.) Disable your Virtual Memory. Windows will cry a few times, just ignore its error messages.

2.) Reboot your computer and defrag your C: drive. If your swapfile is on a different drive/partition, defrag that drive instead.

3.) After the defrag is complete, go back to the Virtual memory settings and select 'Let me specify my own virtual memory settings'. Make both the Minimum and Maximum values the same. This prevents Windows from wasting time resizing the swapfile. If disk space is low, you can go with a 100 MB swapfile, otherwise go for 200 MB. This will ensure you will never run out of virtual RAM.

4.) Reboot and enjoy your optimized swapfile!

I'm gettin around 42FPS avg. on most maps at 1024x768 with high details and surround sound. Tried 800x600 and it wasn't any faster??? A3d still doesn't sound right on MX300 and overall, the game runs about 10FPS slower than the demo.

I removed my SB Live! and put the old AWE64 back in and things got much better. There are new drivers out for the SB Live! but mine is running so good now that I hate to screw with it....

I run at 800 x 600 (in 32-bit color!!!) with all the goodies on a true 52k connection with smooth gameplay on most servers. On others, my ping shoots up awhile then comes back down, fluctuating. I just don't play there long. /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif
On WadAsia's server, I get smooth as silk gameplay, even with my 52k connection and all. Wraith, do you happen to live in Australia?????? hehehe...

Oh, and when I bumped my RAM up to 176 MB from 128 there a big improvement also. I was surprised, I figured more than 128 would be plenty. I think buggy drivers are the culprit in most cases, like my SB Live! experiences. Re-installing Windows 98 Second Edition really helped me out recently too. I think I had tried so many different drivers for the TNT2 that I had pieces left over that were causing the problems I initially had. (stuttering play, especially on the net)

I am thrilled with the performance of my machine, I wish I could get a cable modem or something, but can't afford to right now. I may try the 3com gaming modem sometime to see how it affects ping. (I average about 225 ping now.)

I will say this, I bet the servers are probably closer to you then me!! But thats ok I will continue to play UT with A fuked UP NET CODE !!! And suffer at the hands of epic's NETCODE NIGHTMARE!!!! Because you are not here at my desk at my computer experiencing my problems so shut the FUK up!!! You people just don't seem to notice it because A. you either have cable Isdn or DSL B. you live really close to the server C. if you have seen that little disconnect icon flashing as much as I have even at a 140 ping with no people in there, then I just flat out am imagining all this crap and its not really happening !!!! Ha !!! I laugh in your face Joe Blow so shut the Fuk up !!! And let me suffer with this in my own fashion!! If it takes Bithching about it 24 hrs a day I will and so will the 20 or so people in my town who bought the damn game and also are having the fits with this game online and trust me these people have the systems to run the game aND OUT of all the games that screw up over the net UT is setting a record here in this town as a big joke online !!!! I got enough speed I got enough ram and I got a very good server that is highly prasied for the great connections .. Maybe its the othe way around, all the damn servers are in Australia and so are you!!!!Boy

Thanks to all with USEFULL input (rather than ranting). I went ahead and bought the extra RAM ($240 - OUCH!!!) and it helped a hell of a lot. Still have a few advanced options tweaks to try out and will give the overclocking a second try. The memory also seems to fix the SB live problems I was having. It's like a whole new game /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif Yee Haw!!! Let's rock!!!

I just got UT installed today. It's awesome, to say the least! I am using an Athlon 550, 128meg PC100, V3-3000, Vortex sound, 26.4K dialup connection. I played quite a bit on my LAN, and this machine makes a hella good server. My other machines are {PII-266, 64meg 60ns, V2-8meg/Diamond Stealth 220,Yamaha sound}; and an {AMD350 K6-2,64 meg PC100,Creative Banshee Blaster 16meg, Sound Blaster16}. These lesser machines are quite playable and enjoyable at lesser resolutions than my "Baby".

So far as netplay goes, it seems about typical so far for me, which is to say it is as good as I could expect on 26.4K. The lag that's there is tolerable and can be "learned" to a certain extent. It sure beats the hell out of Quake3, which is like a series of snapshots strung together most of the time.

RW (and others)posted a modem tweaking page somewhere recently, I did all that stuff, and I think it has helped to lessen the "sleeping modem" thing for me. There were things that I had never heard of doing anything with before I read it there, and I was a bit nervous about some of them, but so far so good. I also highly recommend rerunning Windows98SE setup, after you have all your hardware and software installed. I fixed two computers lately by doing just that. I think that windows setup may be a bit flakey and doesn't get a good read off the cd, most of the time.

Not a single problem for me. It has run perfectly from day one.

I have a Cel466 running at 560mhz, 192megs ram, V3 3000, MX300.

Oh yeah, a 56k modem too. I'm really not sure what The-Wraith is crying about. I get a very good connection (below 180ms ping) to many servers, and I find that games are very playable at 300ms. It's obviously a problem on his end, yet he blames the game.

The-Wraith, Epic cannot help it if you have sh*t equipment, use a crappy isp, or live in the middle of nowhere.

But I do see your point Yellow 5 , after all it was people like THE ROCK giving me the whatever the hell a roodie poo is running his mouth off and putting what I had to say down pretty nasty with his mouth!! After reading what RW had to say about swaping virtual memory I followed it to a T ..It helped quite abit thanks RW now if you wouldn't mind repeating that web address for modem tweaks I will stop my complaining, and try to make due with what I got until Cable modems hit this city.. Apparently South Western Bell Telephone services around my area need to make some improvements on their line network.. Now to all whom critisized me, let me say this.. People like you are the reason nobody gets help around here, because your to swift when it comes to judge people and not only run what they have on their system down if their having problem with video cards, sound ect... Just because you are not having problems does not mean their not having any. Some people will say anything just about to run their mouth off.. I adimit I do, and if anyone else says they don't I would say their liar.. Now their are people in here like RW that help out quite abit, and those people are deeply appreciated.. But People like THE ROCK need to just sit back and keep their traps shut if they do not have the answer to the persons problem.. If he wants to defend the game fine do it else where and let the people who know what their doing help the people in need.. Yes my statments about this game where harse, mind you I do not have any problems with it offline at all I am very happy the way it runs.. But online I had a legitimate complaint for the reason qa 140 ping on a server with the little red disconnect flashing for no reason is a sign of a glith!!! Quake has that that little disconnect icon as does Tribes and neither one ever pop up.. I think it is a pain to get one on UT because it will cause you to pause meanwhile you get your a$$ fragged and there is nothing you can do, but wonder why that stupid icon is flashing and you are not showing no packet loss whatsoever.. Thats ok if you people think that their is not an issue with that then there is problem here, because I see no need in people jumping the gun when just by chance it could be the game and not the owners problem..But let us not over look Unreal, I remember when it came out people had alot of problem with it, much like UT and the result of this there where the one's who said there was nothin wrong with the game and did pretty much like you people are doing today. Bicthing at me because I have a problem with UT on line .. Shame on you people for being like that.. Oh well but that was then this is now, seems like time can repeat itself .. I will just sit back quietly and wait for the long line of patches to come down the road,, there will be there is no denying it.. Maybe somebody at Epic will wake up and see that their was a problem and quit using self denial saying nothings wrong.. I think what the problem is that your afraid if this game turns into another Unreal with patches out the rear you are afraid it might mess up the playing your having.. This is the link to the modem tweak site. Try these tweaks, I think they make a difference (or else my ISP has suddenly smartened up at the same time)!
BTW, if you think you've already tweaked your modem settings, chances are you haven't seen some of the things mentioned in this article. It's very current.

Demo runs FACKING BRILLIANT! Even with 64Ram I get *no* swapping during play, on my V1 the framerate is very nice, better than Unreal? Perhaps, I've never run a time demo. Maybe I should.

I used to b1tch about ping spikes, however I've just come to the conclusion that this is only/mostly when I leave #UTGames open when playing /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif so I won't be doing that any more /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

So I'm well happy, 'cept the flippin' Mac version ain't out till mid Jan /~unreal/ubb/html/frown.gif

I became a critic Epic about a month before UT was released in the hope of stirring up enough **** to keep Epic from becoming to complacent and to keep Epic on the ball..so to speak.
Well,if you read/post at GT forum..you may know that I am the "darling" of GT forum (sic).

.. the majority of posters at GT forum never played Unreal or had much prior experience with Epic and as a consequence most of the posters at GT took great offence at my anti-Epic (but pro UT/Unreal) stance and flamed me regularly. No one there except a very, very small minority (Vengeance, Paladin..etc) saw that Epic could do wrong.

It's ironic now that UT has been released that these same, prior defenders of Epic are now complaining all the bugs in UT etc., have you read the GT forum lately?

All in all UT is a pretty good game and I think Epic did a good job with it.
I hope with time Epic will give us a game we can all play with ..and have some fun..we just need a little patience and give our support to Epic, so they can fix some of the bugs...

Who was causing more problems then helping.
Bitching and Moaning all day doesn't equate with objective criticism.
Guess what? I Didn't really like the gameplay that much and the game was buggy.

UT IS MUCH BETTer. IT takes everything that that Unreal had that was good and it made it better. The Sniper Rifle for one is better.
All the weapons are better. The mini-gun is way better. And its d3d performance is better. Now I can run the game at 800x600 at 32bit color. And with high detail textures and it looks better. Alot of the great old dm levels from Unreal have been ported over to UT. I don't need to play UNREAL ONE SP ANYMORE. So guess what? UNREAL STAYS Off my hard drive. Nuff said. on that.

As far as the D3d problems that occured due to the Safedisc Software. EVERYONE KNOWS THE FIX TO THAT. And The fix works. And it allows
d3d to run great. And For your information

I am having the same problems that the wraith is having. I play for a couple of minutes and sure enough that damn red icon pops up. I went out and bought a modem. No change. Then I went out and bought a new telephone line, filter, and changed ISP. Same thing. AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH By now I'm pissed. I tweak my modem, download easy-mtu. NO DIFFERENCE. What the hell. So I go to work where they have ISDN. :-) I figure I'll find out real quick what the hell is going on. Download the demo and crank it up on a crappy ATI Rage piece of **** and guess what. SAME THING. Even on ISDN this damn red icon pops up. This is ****ed up. I play Q3, Q2, Q1, h/l, heretic2, hexen2, no problems. Start UT online and that ****ing red icon pops up. EPIC fix your ****ing code. I've been waiting a ****ing year to play this ****ing game and its ****ed up. Godamit I hate Q3 and I'm tired of waiting for SOF or TF2 to come out, so fix the ****ing code. I ****ing upgrade my system to an Pentium3 600 w/ GeForce 256 and 256 megs ram and the only thing I see is that ****ing red icon. Fix the ****ING CODE......... I feel better already.... Thanks for letting me blow off steam... :-)

The-Wraith, when your first post is so hostile, how can you expect everyone to be so nice and helpful?

I see people every day, on all sorts of forums complaining about how their particular game won't run well on their system. And they rarely ask "what can I do to my system, to make X run better?". It's usually ranting and blaming the game.

Now, had you asked politely, you'd get more help than you'd know what to do with.

One wee small problem (other than Lag and packet loss).

I have noticed my Hard drive is being accessed frequently..whilst playing UT..that did not happen in the demo, wtf??

I have a 128 MB ram, defragged disc, 150 mb virtual swap file running at cel300a@450 mhz with a Cougar TNT2/32 mb ram on D3D at 600x800/16 bit...

Everytime the game accesses the HD ,my game hangs up or slows and I get fragged... BUMMER&gt;&gt;

Well people, I am sorry if I get sooo hostile when I post.. But when you got people to the right of you, and people to the left of you saying there's nothing wrong with the game online over and over, after people in the middle who are having the problems posted over and over that their is and we keep getting sandwiched by a few few people that fail to see the truth ... Why do you got to be so stubborn when it comes down to someone having problems with this game??? I have tweaked myself to death trying to play over the net, and that still did nothing to help me sure I have a good low ping and it shows no packet loss so it would seem.. But it plays like a 1000 ping most of the time!!! Ping times can be altered in a game to read lower then they really are!!!! And I think that is the case with UT.. A cover up ?? Hum who would have ever suspected that...Now All you people once again that are not having problems with the game!! I am happy for you!! Now step aside and accept that the game itself is bugged!!!Now say it all together UT is bugged and needs fixed!!!! See now wasn't that easy /~unreal/ubb/html/smile.gif

My System:
Mostly empty 13.5Gig HD
Diamond Viper V550 (TNT)

I run the game in Direct3D at 640x480 with textures set pretty high. It runs fine most of the time in single player tourney. Up until the CTF map after "Opposing Worlds" (I forget what it's called). It jams up in that map every single time. I've got my swap file set up at min 200 max 200. I run the game with EAX, maybe I should turn that off... My question is has anyone had the same problem with this map? I think it's called something-realms, it has a volcano or something in it, though I haven't had much of a chance to look at the map cause it jams up after half a minit.

[RN]NIL8R - try setting your swap to 400 MB (2x RAM). That may help if the map is stuttering, but if it totally locks up, I don't know what to tell you.

I freeze up on that map to, so I have no explanation.. Sometimes the map will lock up completely and I will have to reboot..

This setup does not run UT well at all, even with all low detail. Can anyone tell me which aspect of my computer is slowing me down the most? Any suggestions for a fix?

If I was a betting man..I'd say your Ram is not sufficient..forget what it says on the box (recommneded 64 megs)thats a fantasy conjured up by Epic's Profit bottom line" to make UT appear more appealing to a wider target market.

I use 128 MB RAM and I STILL get file swapping. I think that UT demands more than 128MB ram, suggest at least 160MB RAM .. Bummer ...I know. /~unreal/ubb/html/frown.gif

Your CPU is probably decent but the Voodoo Banshee aint that great anymore.

That map I was talking about that keeps freezing up is after "Facing Worlds" in tournament mode (I said "Opposing Worlds") and it's called "something caves" (I still forget it. I can't continue at all in my tournament cause I finished DM and Domination. I hope the new patch fixes it.

Of all the problems that I get with users running Unreal Tournament, it is the following:

1. Driver are not compatible w/ DirectX 7.0
2. There is another program that is interfering with the game
3. Don't meet system requirements.
4. The game is designed that way.
5. Their system is dorked in some way that it will take a reformat and OS reinstallation to correct.
6. Won't take my suggestions or advice on how to get it running and are stuck complaining and posting to forums about how the game sucks.

But then again, I just work for the company. :-)

Just because you have the best gaming system in the world, doesn't mean you know how to make it the best gaming system in the world....
