Now, if this post is On Topic, what's it doing in an Off Topic Forum. That would make the heading "On topic" off topic. Therefore...

Hmmmm, this is the Off Topic Forum.

So if this thread is On Topic, then it must be Off Topic.

But if it is truely Off Topic it cannot possibly be On Topic. You can't be off and on at the same time. Therefore, this thread must be neither On Topic nor Off Topic, because if it is one, then it must be both, and it can't be both, so it must be neither (I almost minored in philosophy). This means there is no thread.

Therefore, I have just conclusively proved that this thread does not exist. So please ignore everything that I have posted here, as I cannot possibly have posted it in this nonexistant thread and you cannot possibly be reading it now.

Anybody got any asprin??

I dunno, based on his reaction he actually read the thread. Since he read it, and tried to make sense of it, even though this thread does not exist, we should give him an aspirin. We'll need the heavier stuff for ourselves though.

Now, I'm posting on a non-existent thread. That has been determined. If that is the case, there should be nobody reading these replies, and I should also be ignoring everybody elses replies. Not ignoring all of you would constitute some form of schizophrenia. (Only I'd be seeing words, not hearing voices.)

Now, let me see...

If this thread was entitled "Off-Topic" in the Off Topic forum, it would be on topic for being off topic. This would result in the post being on topic and, yet again, would have to be removed from this forum. Since it would be on topic, it could then be placed on the Unreal Tournament forum.

ok, it's simple. This post is on the topic of being off topic which in essence makes it on topic which means it has no place in off topic, but since it is, in fact, in off topic, then it must be off topic which would negate my original statement about it being on topic but then it couldn't not be on topic because everything has a topic at the top so opff topic doesn't exist except in our minds but then there wouldn't be an off topic for things that were on topic unless they were actually off topic, therefore, off topic is on the topic of being off topic which is a topic in and of itself. The point is that spleens and coffee don't taste like marmoset flavored cofee in the morning when the sun goes behind the armadillo tree.

*sigh* Here I go again...

If it's On Topic, it's off topic in the off topic forum. So it's not On topic, it's off topic. As our Forum Philosopher Boom pointed out, if it is one it is both. It can't possibly be both, it is neither.

Morety

So driving Wacky wacky, which would in fact be driving Wacky sane, is now off topic in the non-existent on topic post in the off topic thread.

Since driving Wacky wacky (sane) is off topic, it could be considered on topic in the off topic forum. But, since the post is on (off) topic I think the question is valid.

Hypthetically speaking...to myself...of course.

There's still the question whether driving Wacky wacky would make him sane. You see, he could even become..uhm...more wacky (or Wacky, depends on how you look at it). If it drived him more wacky (Wacky, wackyWacky, or whatever you like, or dislike, or want...uhm...never mind...) this thread would have nothing to do with this on topic off topic thread (which in fact is already the case and would still be the case if driving Wacky wacky (Wacky, wackyWacky, or whatever you like, or dislike, or want...uhm...never mind again...) would drive him sane, not more wacky (...you know already)). You ask whether driving Wacky wacky (or wacky Wacky) belongs to this thread or not? No idea. I would say no, since wacky is really off topic here but this thread is on topic (yeah, I know: in the off topic forum).

Loibisch

I have headache...

Morety

It works like a double negative. If he's not unwacky, he's wacky.

So if he's wacky to a wacky, he must be sane.

Boom, you're the PuF philosopher. Am I not correct?

If this thread existed, is it on or off topic. Since it can't be both, it's neither. Driving Wacky sane both does and doesn't belong here. Since it can't be both, it's neither. So please ignore all the previous posts.

This has turned out to be a wacky thread all right. Here's a recap thus far...

Wacky, however, doesn't think this thread is wacky. Since he's SuperWacky/simply whacked/Wacky squared, he thinks it's all perfectly normal. :)

Boom, the PuFilosopher, is ignoring it, as it doesn't exist. He is contemplating whether or not his navel is the center of the universe, or a really cool lint collecting device.

WAnk is confused again, and it was only his first post. Perhaps he got lost in ignoring a previous post which was actually a following post, which would make sense.

Vortex was asking for medicine after only 4 posts. He was given only an aspirin. We have not heard from him since. Vortex, you okay out there buddy?

Ruffrider wants us to re-type everything all over again. (Note: Hey Ruff, two words...scroll)

CHRYSt is above all this. He knows exactly what we're all trying to figure out. He graced us with a quick post, and has then gone back to playing with his chimps. He's actually given a clue as to where this thread will end, in Marmoset coffee. (Please note, that this has been the longest thread without mention of any form of monkey until now.)

Zaccix posted something along the lines of "How much wood could a woodchuck..." The answer to his post is...It would be off topic as an on topic topic if an on topic thread existed.

Loibisch, I had to save the best for last. Loibisch is probably the only one who understands each and every post on this thread. Loibisch has actually expanded on it and taken it over. I'm really scared of the mind of Loibisch. :)

Too bad you're all just figments. You'd probably have been cool people to type to. :)

Morety (feat. Taskmaster): He actually started this (non-existent) thread since he was wondering about the statement of Taskmaster:

quote:
How can you be off topic in an Off-Topic forum? It doesn't compute...

So special thx to Task for his wacky mind (don't even think of it!)...

You have proven to be an equal enemy...congratulations, I have to admit this is the funniest thread I've read (and posted in) for months...uhm...forget it, I forgot I was neither able to post here nor to read it...so are you ;). So I guess I will thank you per e-Mail...I wonder why, at least you haven't posted here anything (so have (or haven't) I).

I also want to thank different people for their really funny ideas:

First of all Taskmaster for his already mentioned idea which actually gave the impulse for this non-existant thread.

Boom for actually two statements:

quote:
If an ontopic tree falls in an offtopic forest....

I still have no idea about this...but since I don't see any trees here (maybe because this thread doesn't even exist and even if it existed I would be really surprised seeing any trees at the PU-Forums...especially in the on topic section (we're on topic right now, right?) since trees are really not on topic here) I declare this unimportant...(for now) :)

and:

quote:
My favorite philosophers are Zen Teachers. You ask them what the meaning of life is, and they wack you with a stick, or give you some unsolvable riddle to ponder. Cracks me up.

Probably it won't work, since the only thing I've seen of your brain was neuron 6684615 of the nerve stem 05163 located in the lower cerebral cortex (and exactly that caused an error...damn http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~unreal/ubb/html/icons/icon8.gif . That's not that helpful...the other error isn't of interest here. If I win the Nobel prize award with it I let you know.

Back to Zen teachers (thx to Morety):

quote:
Zen: If a man speaks in a forest, and there's no women around to hear him, is he still wrong?

Depends on the forest.

I think these are the most funniest quotes of this thread...

You also forgot to mention that Chryst found out that "Off Topic" in itself doesn't exist. That's not exactly right: Off Topic may exist (I don't know where though) but the Off Topic Forum doesn't exist, since everything posted on the Off Topic Forum is On Topic there (you know it's like this post...the whole Off Topic Forum is like this post...).

I have another question (I won't let this topic die!):
This thread doesn't exist, right?
The Off Topic Forum doesn't exist either, right?
So: Why the **** (intentionally censored by myself) do I see new replies to this post everytime I log on. And everytime I browse the Forums I see that this thread has moved up and down a little bit (down isn't the problem you see, up is...a thread only moves up if new posts have been posted on it...). I see the counter rises (it also says we're on page 2 already but I can't believe that), but I shouldn't be able to read these new posts (as you all know: I do! I don't know how I do that for myself, so I'm not going to tell you). So our idea with the non-existenceness must be wrong. We need another idea...

Loibisch

Thx to all, please don't let this topic die...

Well, depending on the size of your bellybutton, it could be considered deep thought if you have a beer gut. :)

This thread definitely does not exist! It's On topic in an off topic forum which we all know is not possible!! Definitely NOT!! NADA! Zilch! Zero! Zip!

Posting an no nonsense thread in an off topic forum makes it off topic which makes it exist. However, On topic topics in off topic forum which itself is off topic but due to the circumstances is on topic becomes on topic! Perfectly clear, yes?

Now, by posting this on topic topic in the off topic forum making it an off topic topic that is on topic just made Wacky wacky! A wacky Wacky will get wackier. When a wacky Wacky is wackier, everyone gets wacky and all the wackiness spreads making even more people wacky! Now that's all clear.

Off Topic doesn exist...but no Off Topic posts...no wait, now I've got it:
A post is only Off Topic if it has nothing to do with the topic of the forum. So since this post has nothing to do with the other forums it is Off (those forums') Topics. But it is On Topic here, so it HAS to stay here! Sicne it is on Off Topic it does belong to this forum.

There's still another question: Does a thread get off topic (or maybe on topic) by having a link to this thread? Then what about linking this thread to itself? Would that make it more on (or off) topic?
And what if I linked to another thread in this thread? Would that make this thread on (or off) topic?

I am now looking out of my nipples and whistling out of my bellybutton. Which is of course, the center of the universe. ;)

Hmmm, actually my navel is rather facinating. Let me ponder it for a while. I have many pseudophilosophical thoughts on the many funny posts that have somehow been added to this nonexistant thread (umm, I'm starting to doubt that it is actually nonexistant, I will get back to that).

First, my navel and its relation to the Universe....

This is going to take some deep thought, I will be back.

Loibisch:

When asking about the thread linking unto itself, it compares with the double-negative theorum used in the "wackyWacky" case. It is not exactly a double negative, it would have been a square of the situation. But, like a mirror to a mirror, this thread is infinite thanks to Zaccix. It has squared itself an infinite number of times. Further proof of the SuperWacky syndrome.

Posting an no nonsense thread in an off topic forum makes it off topic which makes it exist. However, On topic topics in off topic forum which itself is off topic but due to the circumstances is on topic becomes on topic! Perfectly clear, yes?

So GunnerX, I will tell you something now: You think you know it all better than we do? ;) You drop your opinion here anbd think it's the only one? WRONG! ;) This post DOES exist! Why would there be an Off Topic Forum if no off topic posts existed? So there have to be off topic posts and this is definately one of them!

And Morety:

quote:
When asking about the thread linking unto itself, it compares with the double-negative theorum used in the "wackyWacky" case. I don't think it works like a double negative. In Wackywacky the second wacky affects the first (positive or negative...who cares?), but here the second thread (another window) doesn't affect the first one (it is still there with no change). So it works more like a double positive (another window is added). But a double positive is nothing else than a positive...so linking this thread to itself is positive (good)!

My other question hasn't been answered, yet. What if you set link a thread in the On Topic section to an off topic thread? Does it become off topic by this? Or what if you set an link in an Off Topic section to an on topic thread? Maybe this would solve our problem, maybe we all can read this thread by linking it to an on (or off) topic thread? Definately worth a try...
I think this thread is the incarnation of evil...err...I mean of an off topic thread linked to an off topic thread AND an off topic thread linked to an on topic thread AND an on topic thread linked to an off topic thread AND an on topic thread linked to an on topic thread AT THE SAME TIME!!! Since this is impossible (think of it a bit...) I declare this thread (once again) non-existant, till we find an answer here.

Here's an easy way to look at it Loibisch:

On Topic = positive
Off Topic = Negative

Linking on topic to off topic = off topic
Linking off topic to on topic = off topic
Linking on topic to on topic = on topic
Linking off topic to off topic = on topic

In your final paragraph, you included 4 off topic threads and 3 on topic threads. That would be an off topic thread.

btw: I was using the double negative example proving the simply whacked theory. I believe we agree on that point.

Your status has been accepted, if you applied to be called Masterful. :)

Good idea Morety!

But "oddly even" reads...uhm...strange. I don't think you can call it that way, since it isn't odd, but (only) even (which causes the problem of "eveness". Therefore it doesn't belong to any topic at all).
Great idea though :).

The description for off topic reads like this:

quote:
Off Topic
Anything else which isn't that Unreal related.

Which means if we talk about Unreal (Tournament) here, this post is off topic in the off topic forum and has to be moved to the Unreal (Tournament) section (which reads:
quote:
Unreal Tournament
Talk about Unreal Tournament, Epic's latest FPS.

)

Only problem is: We have talked THAT much crap here that we haven't even the tiniest chance to ever get it out this section :(.

I must respectfully disagree. How can you say this is an off topic post? Look at its title. The post is called "On topic". So it can't possibly be an Off topic Post. But it is in the Off Topic Forum, so it can't possibly be....

I think I've been down this road before :)

Now I am going to blow all of your minds. After intense Zen mind clearing exercises, I was able to completely empty my head. It took about 30 seconds. I then returned to the study of my bellybutten. While intensely studying my navel (the center of my, and all possible, universes), I realized that a nonexistant post is sort of like a wormhole. I can use it to travel through time.

"IMPOSSIBLE!!!" you shout.

"Stop shouting." I respond.

The following link is a link to the future.

Time Machine (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~unreal/ubb/html/Forum8/HTML/000879-4.html)

This is a link to the 4th page of this thread. Right now there is no 4th page to this thread. If you click on it, you may travel through time and actually read posts before they are written. Now, nobody has ever traveled through time before. This is very dangerous and the world may just simply cease to exist, so do not click on the link.

Seriously, I'm trusting you guys not to click that link.

Only one thing Sam...
My monitor display is only 2D...I didn't know they already invented holograms for home use...
So what you mean that Unreal and UT never existed on a holodeck (or similar), which is right at this time (I suppose).
What you mean is the following:
With 3D2D3D2D you mean actually 2D2D3D2D, since the screen is displayed in 2D. So you get agrand total of 2D2D, which is actually right! This Forum is 2D (one 2D for the text and one for the background).
You could also probably throw a D4 (2D+2D=4D=D4, you know) and the result would be something like 1-4, however there could be a small chance when throwing to let it fall off the topic...err...table. Then it would certainly roll under your sofa and since you can't get it out of there again it would be sucked in by the vacuum cleaner the next time (don't ask me how...).
This procedure is exactly defined as a 42!

Loibisch

Why do you guys seek the answer of life? It's 42, now we need the question. If you have read "The Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy" by Douglas Adams you know what I'm talking of...

Sam_The_Man

Actually, this entire forum doesn't exist, for a very simple (actually, it isn't) reason.

Old games were in 2D on a 3D monitor/TV. This could be expressed as 3D2D. However, the 3D game was then invented but with 2D elements (e.g. 3D plane etc., 2D cockpit). The equation bacame 3D2D3D. The 3Ds canceled out, leaving 2D in a 3D universe. This severely offset causality, and John Major became Prime Minister of Britain.

Then the guys at Epic tried to create a game called Unreal where a 3D game, with a 2D hud, put 2D textures on the 3D objects, which was displayed on a 3D screen. This equation could be said to be 3D2D3D2D, which cancels itself out entirely. Therefore Unreal never existed, nor did PlanetUnreal, nor did PU's forum. Plus there was no semi-sequel called Unreal Tournament, because there was nothing to follow up, which meant that millions died without their reason to live.

It's a pity neither I, UT or this forum exist, because this non-existent theory could make me famous.

Sam, your sig is very pertinent. It seems that this thread has done what it implies. Once we think we've found the answer, more questions have arisen. Very human nature-ish.

The existence of the Universe:

The sun is the nucleus of an atom. The planets are but the protons floating around the nucleus. The galaxy is a molecule. The universe is a cell. Human life is but a cancer waiting to spread. Now that I've solved that question: NEXT!

Page 3 is a link to the future (page 4). This will take you past some posts, including this one if it doesn't make the fourth page, directly to page 4.

You should then use the page 4 link to take you back to page 3 so you don't miss any important posts.

Now that you're back on page 3, you should use the time machine link to page 4 just to ensure it is still operational.

To properly read this thread, the above will continue infinitely.

Therefore, if you are properly reading this thread, you will not see this post once a page four has come up.

It exists now, but will disappear once page four has started.

This post assumes Boom, the PuFilosopher, will do another time machine bringing it to the present, which will then be the past, linking page four to page three.

OK, let's get this cleared up.

This is a Planet Unreal forum. It is meant for:

1. Talking about Unreal/UT
2. Talking about Unreal engine games
3. Talking about the site

Plus, there is 'Off Topic', for things that are not about any of the above. This thread has nothing to do with UT, therefore it goes in the 'Off Topic' forum, because it is off the topic of Unreal, not off the topic of being off topic.

Got it? No? F**k.

Makes sense Sam, other than the fact that this thread has actually mentioned Unreal Tournament. Therefore, it is off topic in the off topic thread, making it on topic for the UT thread. I petitioned moderators to have it moved, but to no avail. :(

If it was moved to the UT thread, it would be on topic. Now it is off topic in the off topic thread. The heading itself, on topic, is off topic in this thread.

It should be moved.

Actually:
1) silly theories about hyperspace: What about DM-Hyperblast? An UT map where you can see a spacecraft flying...so not that off topic...
2) Time compression: you can use the console command slomo <number> where <number> is the multiplier for the time. So you can compress and/or slow down time (which hasn't been mentioned, yet).
But there's not only time but also file compression available for UT...you see?

Hyperspace and DM-Hyperblast... The ship is not travelling through hyperspace, because you certainly couldn't survive outside in hyperspace, shields or no shields. The words bear as much relevance to each other as hyperspace and hypermarket.

Time compression: In time compression past, present and future get mixed together. This has nothing to do with time passing slowly. Nor does it have anything to do with file compression. In file compression your files do not get mixed together. At least, I hope not, or I dread to think what those zip files have done to my hard drive...

Do not argue with me about time compression, because I have played FF8 through twice. And I still haven't found all those damn GFs...

Navels: Boom could have been a test tube baby, so NYAH. And 'navel' does not mean 'naval'. Sounding like another word has no place in this thread where we are seriously discussing quantum physics. And navels.

If time moves slowly(er) in the game, regular time keeps going. Therefore, when you turn off the slomo game, everyone else is that much further into the future, leaving you in the past, thereby compressing time.

Naval Oranges. There, now naval is official.

Morety you moron (...uhm :)), we haven't got a time machine to page 1 (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~unreal/ubb/html/Forum8/HTML/000879.html)...oops, here it is, now go and get your medicine (you may, since you have read all that crap and now you really need it...)

And Sam...you're boring :), but besides that:

About Hyperspace/Hyperblast:
You certainly can survive outside (at least I can...), since there are shields (as Morety mentioned) and this is obviously the eason why you aren't sucked out into space instantly, and you can breathe outside, right? So there have to be shields (or prove me wrong...)!

quote:
In time compression past, present and future get mixed together

Have you ever heard of U4E4UT (hell I like this name :)). It's a mod where weapons of many times are put together (you have a pike, a machinegun, a_nuke (oops ;)), phasers...whatever you like.
<sarcasm>And I thought the time is compressed when everything is faster...man you proved me wrong, of course is FF8 right, no doubt, yeah FF8 is my god, it shows you all the secrets of life it tells you all about travelling through time, and it is right...</sarcasm> not meant offensive ;)

And like I mentioned before:
If Boom's navel went boom, it has something to do with UT, since blowing up things (mostly ppl of the enemy team) is the purpose of UT...but I've already said that.

Of course FF8 is the answer to everything! If it only lasted as long as UT it would be the best game ever, period. I had to stop myself playing so much of it so I wouldn't complete it within a few days...

Shields. I doubt even the best shields would prevent you from dying in hyperspace.

UT4E: So if I held a sword from a museum, made in about 1200AD in one hand, and a gun in the other, I would be compressing time? Don't talk $h1t.

Time is not actually slowed down when you use the slomo command, because UT is just a game, not a universe, and is therefore subject to the laws of this universe. Therefore it is simply an illusion of time being slowed down, because actual time is passing at the same speed as usual (i.e. too fast... damn I need some sleep... no, must play UT some more... :)).

Yes, but the old medieval sword would exist in this time, not the time in which it was made, and you would simply be holding objects from the same time in each hand. My argument was that it is possible for two different objects to co-exist even if they were not made at eactly the same time. Compressing time means to mix different _times_ together, not objects made at different times.

Shields: No idea. I will have to resort to cat-calling "Trekkie! Trekkie!".

Unreal Universe is a website, not a universe. 'Universe' is just what it is called.

Yeah, for example "a sword from a museum, made in about 1200AD" and "a gun". I really doubt they were made at the same time, right? But they still coexist, right?
So what's your point then? :)

I'm not a Trekkie, but I guess I have won the argument that there maybe could be shields that prevent you from dying in hyperspace. You can't know what scientists will invent in about 50 years...noone can, but scientists have proven in the past that they can invent things normal people don't even think of, like shields for surviving in hyperspace :).

Yes, but I call myself Sam The Man, but I'm only 15. The Dopefish isn't a fish (otherwise he'd have great difficulty posting). Boom isn't an explosion. Morety is not Sherlock Holmes's arch-enemy (neither actually existed). Therefore Unreal Universe can be _called_ a Universe without actually _being_ a universe.

My point about swords is that you said in UT4E, objects from different times coexisted, so that was time compression. I say that it isn't, because of the sword and gun argument. Plus, you are looking at posts on this thread that were posted at different times, but that isn't time compression is it?

OK, you win the argument about hyperpsace. But I think I can claim to have won the time compression argument. That leaves us with the argument about the slomo command. It's 1-all, this an exciting match fans... watch this space.

Dopefish, you say this is an odd topic? That would make it off topic. (We've also proven that even would be on topic.) You're being counter-productive you ally of Sam! We're petitioning to get this into the UT forum because it's on topic. (Sam would disagree.)

Sam, nice take on your sig. :) I'm anxiously waiting to see what Loibisch has to say about it. LOL. The real argument is whether we've talked enough about UT to get this thread into the UT forum. Unreal Tournament is a great game and Q3 sucks. The previous sentence alone was the topic of many posts in the days when UT came out...in the Unreal Tournament thread. That sentence alone is a topic unto itself, which is worthy of placement in the higher profile forum of UT.

Zaccix, I don't know if we'll be able to read this post, because to properly read this thread, people will be caught in the time loops, and will probably awaken to see the world running amok with talking apes named Caeser.

1)Unreal Universe can be called universe without being one. But it could be an universe though it is called universe (like the universe for example). Being called a universe doesn't mean you're not one...right?
2)The website posts only stuff about Unreal/UT and related things. So it would be a site about the universe of UT.

quote:
My point about swords is that you said in UT4E, objects from different times coexisted, so that was time compression.
I say that it isn't, because of the sword and gun argument.
Plus, you are looking at posts on this thread that were posted at different times, but that isn't time compression is it?

Huh?...from the scratch.
You said time compression had nothing to do with UT.
I said time compression was in UT as either the slomo command or as for example U4E4UT.
You said U4E4UT wasn't a good example for time compression since:

quote:
In time compression past, present and future get mixed together.

They do get mixed together...was my argument.
You:

quote:
UT4E: So if I held a sword from a museum, made in about 1200AD in one hand, and a gun in the other, I would be compressing time?

quote:
If "I held a sword from a museum, made in about 1200AD in one hand, and a gun in the other" i would mix together stuff from different times i.e. past present and future...

quote:
My argument was that it is possible for two different objects to co-exist even if they were not made at eactly the same time.

Yeah, I guess so, like the sword and the gun. One of us wouldn't be here if it wasn't possible that stuff (i.e. people) from different times (i.e. birth date) "exist" at the same time.

And:

quote:
Plus, you are looking at posts on this thread that were posted at different times, but that isn't time compression is it?

You said time compression was "that it is possible for two different objects to co-exist even if they were not made at eactly the same time." So actually you said that time compression is the fact of existence of things out of different (i.e. posting) times at the same time. But I can see the thread and since it wasn't posted at "one time" it's compressed? Now you're talking $hit... :), but if you like to argue that way, I've won (since you gave me right, but I give you a chance to correct this though :))

NEXT:

quote:
Time is not actually slowed down when you use the slomo command, because UT is just a game, not a universe, and is therefore subject to the laws of this universe.

OK then, go to the website. Does it look like a huge expanse of space, containig hydrogen atoms and lots of other atoms formed from same? No. It looks suspiciously like a website. Therefore the chances are is that it's a website.

UT is not a universe. It's either a game, or a community.

Sam, can you prove that wrong?

Universes and dimensions other than our own exist. If you can prove me wrong, please do. How do you know that by slowing down time in the UT game doesn't effect anything else? Every action causes a reaction.

And, just so you don't lose track of what this debate is actually about, it is felt that there is enough discussion about UT in this thread that it should be moved into the UT forum.

>what can cause a time compression...so I >could see if this existed...or if we simply >are talking crap here... , and how do you >see that time compression has happened?
Because everything goes all wibbly and weird. Play FF8 for God's sake.

>So actually you are guilty of this.
But I hardly ever lose FF8, so that's that argument gone up in flames.

>Universes and dimensions other than our own >exist. If you can prove me wrong, please >do.
In this case you have to prove that you are right, not me proving that you are wrong. You're like the person who says "God/Aliens/Ghosts hasn't/haven't been proved not to exist, therefore he/they exist".

>How do you know that by slowing down time >in the UT game doesn't effect anything >else? Every action causes a reaction.
The action is you typing 'slomo x' at the console. The reaction is the game slowing down.

1)Hell I don't care about that ;), I guess there are a lot of things not mentioned in the OED (=Oxford English Dictionary), right?
2)Try about "lag" or "packet loss", I can't imagine the OED referring to the IP protocol (packets...) correctly in the terms and meaning of TCP/IP (there are surely better examples around, but this will do for now). The OED isn't the reference when talking of gaming stuff (which is exactly what we're doing here).
3)We're on a gaming board (or at least we try to get onto one :), that's what the discussion is about :)), so it's obvious that when we mention things we mean the gaming aspect of them, right?
4)And besides: people I know don't look up every word in a dictionary before they start to talk (especially the people on this board, right? ;)).
5)There something called "colloquial language", and I doubt that every aspect/point of colloquial language is mentioned in the OED.
6)I think most people here would agree with saying something like "I've seen it on the Universe..." or similar, you often short proper names (consisting of two or more words) to one of the words. Like "Unreal Universe" to Universe.

When I said: "How do you know the real universe is the Universe? And not the "Unreal Universe"? You say the "real" (and only?) universe out there is the universe itself." you were referring to the OED again (it seems like the OED is your god, eh? ;)).
7) You think the OED is right in every point? So why is it being improved all the time? Because of some things are wrong (Look at number 2 or 5 for further info on this).

quote:

I said:
8)How can you say that only the "real" universe ("huge expanse of space, containig hydrogen atoms and lots of other atoms formed from same") counts when talking about universes?
9)If you talk about a universe you could also mean an "irreal" universe (like Unreal Universe) 10)or else "Unreal Universe" wouldn't be called universe, right?.

You said:
Unreal Universe is called 'Universe because it's a stylish name. Not because it is one. And there's no such word as irreal.

You haven't answered to the most of my points (only to the last one to be exact...)
To the irreal (the OED is your god...I'm pretty sure now ;)):
That's why I've put it in "".
Would it be better if I'd have talked about an "unreal" universe? That makes my argument even more obvious...
So I guess you should answer to the other points, too (I referred to them in the quote, you have already (only) answered to 10)...).

Oh, and since you haven't answered to my "wibblyness argument", I guess I've won that one, too :).

1) All the proper meanings are in there though. You can't expect it to include what you dream up to attempt to prove your silly arguments.

2) It is the reference of all meanings. So if it does not talk about gaming universes, a game universe is not a universe, it is a scenario or setting.

3) I think someone would only have to look at the rest of the post to prove you wrong.

4) And some people I know don't think a word means whatever they want it to mean.

5) See 1 and 4.

6) Er... still doesn't make it a universe, whatever you shorten it to.

7) No, it is updated because new words are being invented/passing into more common use.

8) Because that is the proper meaning of 'universe'.

9) If it's not a real universe (presumably what 'irreal' means) then it's not a proper universe is it?

10) Wibblyness: If you have never played FF8, you do not know what I mean by 'wibblyness'. Everything goes wibbly, not just your vision, and you can also float through space and walk into other times. Can you travel through time on a Redeemer? No. And I haven't seen 'Excessive Violence': what is it?

1) I didn't expect it to do that, it was more of an introduction ;). More to this argument later...

2) My point was that the OED is certainly not referring to gaming stuff correctly (things like TCP/IP, mutator, UnrealED, ).
For example take UnrealED (= Unreal Editor). I'm pretty sure UnrealED isn't mentioned in the OED in the "editor section" (if such a thing exists). But it is an Editor, noone would doubt it. So it is wrong if it doesn't point out UnrealED being an Editor. I know that the OED can't explain every "proper name", so they don't care (and write) about Unreal Universe being an universe (like with UnrealED, they simply run out of space I guess). So I guess you can't apply the "rules" of the OED on proper names. Therefore my other arguments apply again.

3) Nope, I'm certainly discussing only gaming things (that's what the discussion is about), you still try to prove me wrong, so this isn't an argument unless you have successfully proven me wrong here.
So I still mean every thing I say here in it's gaming aspect. Also the word universe.

4) I don't think the word "universe" means whatever I want it to mean. I'm pretty sure about it's meaning. It's only you who can't accept that "universe" may have different meanings.
So people here could still have written their posts without looking up every word in the OED.

5) Sorry, but neither answer 1 nor 4 fits on my argument.
Since colloquial language changes all the time it could be that the OED hasn't been updated on that point, yet.

6) My point was that there's no difference for me between "universe" and "universe", so the "universe" (shorten from "Unreal Universe") sounds pretty like "universe". So we could have talked about "Unreal Universe" by mentioning "universe", how can you know?

7)
quote:
"No, it is updated because new words are being invented/passing into more common use"

Yeah, like "universe" getting a different meaning. Sometimes "new words" (more exactly: new word meanings) need some time before they're added to the OED. That's obvious since these words have to be widely used before they're accepted for the OED. So the OED isn't the reference when talking about a topic (i.e. computer stuff) that changes/evolves really fast. So it is possibly not yet updated, since this word isn't enough used, yet, to be added to the OED. But the meaning is there...

8) How do you know what the proper meaning of "universe" is? There are some words having at least two meanings (one word - two meanings). The "universe" which is mentioned by you was just lucky to be found earlier than gaming universes. That doesn't mean that gaming universes don't exist. You say the "universe" is the only proper one. That's not right, it was only the first one so te definition of "universe" is in the OED not the definition of "universe".

9) I don't only want to show you that the "Unreal Universe" is an universe but that you could also mean it by referring to an universe, especially if done so on a gaming board. See #3 for related info.

9a) Let's add an argument:
The OED surely isn't right with everything. The OED is made by people, and how do you say: "Nobody is perfect." So if people work at improving the OED it is possible that they made some errors. So the OED could be wrong with some stuff you said.

10) Ok, this is obviously getting a bit longer:

quote:
Wibblyness: If you have never played FF8, you do not know what I mean by 'wibblyness'. Everything goes wibbly,
not just your vision, and you can also float through space and walk into other times.
Can you travel through time on a Redeemer?

OK, your vision does get wibbly when playing Stranglove (a bug in the current version). "Excessive Violence" is a mod where all the weapons are a bit overpowered, so it's wibbly in gameplay meanings.

"You can float through space..."
In DM-Hyperblast I often manage to float through space.

"and walk into other times."
Q: Ok, how do you see you walk into other times?
A: You see stuff from other time zones there. Like old weapons (U4E), old architecture (DM-Gothic or other levels (future levels, too)), old persons (the nali, for example (There is no reason that there should be a "flash" or noise when travelling through time, since the only way people ever travelled through time didn't cause such a thing, more on that topic later). Originally the Nalis were in Unreal only, not in UT, so you travel back to the times of Unreal if using them in UT.
So you travel through time (for example) if you're playing U4E on DM-Gothic with some Nalis, right?

"Can you travel through time on a Redeemer?"
"Time" is the 4th dimension. You constantly travel through time (forward), or you simply wouldn't be able to move since the time was "frozen". This is not the case, so you travel through time.

To be able to travel through time backwards you either need the stuff mentioned above or the following setting:

If you think mankind will ever be able to travel backwards in time you have to think of the "time" be arranged like a film, pic after pic...many of them. Else you wouldn't be abe to turn back the state of every atom/molecule to it's former status (which would be quite a lot of work). If you ever did this you would be transform the molekules of your "time machine" as well (and yours, too...eek), therefore rendering it useless at the time (think backwards) you invented it in the past.

So we have to imagine the "time" like a film to think of time travelling to the time before the invention of "time machines". So you could be able to hop to every pic of that film without transforming every molekule back to it's former status. So you need a device which allows you to choose the "pic" you want to travel to. This means that you'd need the other times still existent. Since I can't see them, they have to be in another universe, right?
This would render Morety's argument ("Universes and dimensions other than our own exist.") valid again.
Either the other times exist in a "parallel universe" or time travelling isn't possible.

Talk about time travelling to the future. That would surely be possible (in the "film scenario"), but not in the "transformation" one. Your device had to know all the future states of the atoms/molecules. Besides the fact that this would need another device on it's own it would need A LOT of energy.

Imagine transforming the state of the whole universe to it's future status...would need a lot of processing time for every 1/1000 second (the whole universe) and a lot of energy distributed among the universe...
So you simply can't travel through time like you think you could (not even with magic, since it doesn't exist here...tell me people in the current real world use magic and I'm going to laugh at you... :)). So the only way to travel through time was like the one I told you for UT.

How am I meant to argue with insanity? Anyway:

...these words have to be widely used before they're accepted for the OED.

A word means what the majority of people think it to mean. The OED contains the meanings that are widely thought of. Therefore the definition is what the word means. This answers most of your points, which I am not writing out (for God's sake number your points). As for the rest:

6) If you use a non-standard meaning then you should make that clear. So the first time you say 'universe' with reference to 'Unreal Universe' you should say 'Unreal Universe'. Otherwise the person who you were talking to would not understand you.

9) I think they'd get a simple word like 'universe' right though.

>In DM-Hyperblast I often manage to float through space.

No, you are not floating, you are jumping, because you will eventually land.

The old weapons were made in a different time, but they currently exist in the time you were in. We've been through this before.
Ditto with DM-Gothic.
How do you know the Nails are the same ones that were in Unreal? a) Most of the Nalis got killed and b) The Nalis in UT are a minority of fighting Nalis. The ones in Unreal never made the slightest attempt at fighting.

>"Time" is the 4th dimension. You constantly travel through time (forward), or you simply wouldn't be able to move since the time was "frozen". This is not the case, so you travel through time.
When most people talk about time travelling, they talk about moving through time in a different direction than the one we normally move in. This is what I mean and everyone else means by time travel.

I didn't understand a word of that crap at the end of the message, but what I THINK you mean is that time travel and magic don't exist. I never said they did. I don't see what that argument had to do with anything.

First I have to say that you don't argue with insanity but with me.
Second I have to say that you even managed not to answer most of my numbered points, which makes it a lot harder for me to write an answer since I have to refer to my other posts again...:P

First your arguments...:
6) Yeah, maybe you could have misunderstood something... :).
What I want to say is the following: It doesn't matter what you understoond it's important what was meant. If you (or somebody else) get(s) it wrong "Unreal Universe" could still be meant by saying universe. If you don't get the proper meaning it doesn't change the intended sense of the sentence.

9a, henceforth 9.5)
"I think they'd get a simple word like 'universe' right though."
a)The word universe is simple, but we're talking of the meaning here.
b)You think the universe is simple??? It's very complex.
c)The different meanings of "they're, their, there" are pretty "simple" (even for me though I'm German :)). I've seen (US/English) people here doing it wrong (one example out of many). So I guess they could still make a mistake since "Nobody is perfect".
d)The different meanings of universe easily lead to the chance that they forgot one or two... ;)

Let's get to #10 (which you forgot to number btw...:
a)Nope, I float through space, since I often managed to get shot off the ship. So I'm floating in space. Didn't jump in any way.

b)"The old weapons were made in a different time, but they currently exist in the time you were in. We've been through this before."
My point was how do you see that weapons were made in a different time, but they currently exist in the time you were in? You simply see the weapons, the architecture, the Nalis...you don't see if they're out of another time or just "compressed" (???). And since you can't see it you can't say that there's no time compression involved.

c)Ditto with DM-Gothic

d.a)Most of the Nalis survived when I played the game.
d.b)Have you ever played the U4E testlevel (it has old architecture, too)? The Nalis there are exactly like the ones from Unreal. They don't attack, shout "Obudah" like the old ones, cover themselves with their arms...sweet memories.

Lets make that 11)
I said: "Since I can't see them (the "pics"), they have to be in another universe, right?
a)This would render Morety's argument ("Universes and dimensions other than our own exist.") valid again."
b)Think again of Morety's other statement:
"Planet Unreal is a part of my Universe."

12)"I didn't understand a word of that crap at the end of the message, but what I THINK you mean is that time travel and magic don't exist. I never said they did. I don't see what that argument had to do with anything."

You just have to look at the last sentence of the article to get my point:
"So the only way to travel through time was like the one I told you for UT."
so
a)I've won either the time travel argument, since the only possible way of time travel was like you do in UT. So you travel through time (one of the arguments I need to win to proof that it is time compression, see above)
or
b)If you still say that time travel doesn't exist (which I doubt since there are many games out there with a time travel theme)the "thing" you do in UT has to be time compression, no time travel. Get it? :)

<sigh>

You haven't answered to
2), since my argument was
a)that the OED isn't the reference for gaming stuff (see my original post, I don't want to repeat everything over and over again...)
and
b)that certain things can't be in the OED (not enough space...). You said (again) the OED was right in every point it mentions. But if it doesn't mention stuff, it can't be right with it...right?

3), since my argument was just a "counter-argument" to your "counter-argument", so my very original argument was left untouched. I'll repeat it here:
"We're on a gaming board (or at least we try to get onto one , that's what the discussion is about), so it's obvious that when we mention things we mean the gaming aspect of them, right?"

4), since I said "So people here could still have written their posts without looking up every word in the OED." and you didn't post a proper answer to it...

5), since you still didn't post a proper answer to it...

7), since...OK, something special here. You just took a part of my point instead of the whole sentence and therefore it can only be misunderstood (your fault, sorry). My arguments were (almost getting a bit angry here but I'm a happy person, you know?):
a)"Sometimes "new words" (more exactly: new word meanings) need some time before they're added to the OED."
b)"So the OED isn't the reference when talking about a topic (i.e. computer stuff) that changes/evolves really fast."

8), since you still didn't post a proper answer to it...
a)please read my argument again and reply to it.
b)You said "A word means what the majority of people think it to mean."
Yeah, and what's with the other meanings that most people don't know? Meanings that aren't added to the OED, yet, since there aren't enough people that are interested in this point (and therefore not enough people use it, I don't say no people use it...that's a great difference)?

9), since I said: "I don't only want to show you that the "Unreal Universe" is an universe but that you could also mean it by referring to an universe [or universe], especially if done so on a gaming board. See #3 for related info." - no comment, please reply to it.
