View Full Version : So many decisions! All of them wrong!

I don't like options. I hate options. I despise options.

Does UT have options for its weapons? No. Because they are balanced. They are good. But then I download some mod (it shall remain nameless) that lets me change the amount of damage which each of its weapons inflict.

Are they not confident enough to think that their default values are playable? Are they so incompetent that they would let some nerd with a server decide how people should play their mod?

Some options are good. Like "frag limit", "graphics detail". Even "superpowerfulmode" would be ok. But letting me set each weapons damage, from 1 to 255, is excessive. Give me 3 choices, or 4, or 2. Not 255!

Some argue that it adds replayabilty. Lets us customize it to our personal style.
I say it lets people stuff it up, it makes the mod non-standard. People will play it and not enjoy it, and will they notice that the settings had been fiddled with? No, they'll just assume that the mod is crap.

Options are good, and can be fun. In moderation. But don't give us options which you know are stupid. Don't let us set the nuke's damage to zero. In fact, don't let us set it to anything besides a few predefinced values which are proven to 'work'.

When I am relaxing from the stress of coding, playing someone elses mod, the last thing I want to do is balance and playtest the thing myself.

IDIOTS!!! (not you guys, the programmer(s)) I think that mod was designed so that you would set all guns to 255, so that people run around with miniguns and flaks just fring and its very upsetting since i REALLY like game balance (you all should know that). I want that programmers HEAD!!! Not really, I just want him to understand game balance. I am ranting right now so this is just random type. Dont actually listen. I do this often.

Well what you dont understant is not everyone is like you. Some people dont want/need balance, its those people that use excessive and u4e. and if you notice, rl mods arnt realy balanced either.

If you dont like, dont suggest the mod, and find something you like, there should a mod to fill anyone tastes

I have never played excessive, because I dont like the sound of it, it sounds, well, excessive. U4e is balanceable, but I cant remember any of the combos that I found. I do realize that some people dont want/need balance, and what I cant really seem to figure out is why. I believe that games revolve around balance. If a game isn't balanced, why would you want to play it? It just turns out to be killing. Balanced games make it fair for everybody. No matter what gun you have, you can climb up in ranks. It just leaves everything to tactics and skill, which is why I like UT.

That is true, if you don't like one try another.

But if you want an 'unbalanced' game, then get WAR or U4ET or whatever. That's good. But there is still no reason for too many options. If you want something 'unbalanced', get a mod which is made that way. There is no reason why, for example, the creator of a realistic mod should let us fiddle with options to make it unrealistic, or fiddle with a deliberatly unblanced mod to make it balanced.

Neuroflare, I kinda agree with you and kinda don't. In some ways unbalance is impossible in a game of UT because everyone starts off equal (except in Assault). If you find a super-powerful gun, it is either because of your greater skill or your luck. And even a bit of luck is neccessary to stop UT being a game of chess.

What am I trying to say? Um... If you have to ask, you'll never know. Yeah.

Oh, another thing. If one player has some huge advantage, sometimes it is fun to fight against them. When you finally do frag the guy in the warsuit, it is much more satisfying.

Some unbalance is good. That is why, in plain UT, the redeemer is more powerful than the enforcer. If all the weapons were just enforcers with different models and sounds, the game would be boring.

Finally, powerful weapons are to an extent self balancing, because when you kill a player you can take their weapon. So no matter how powerful the gun is, it is always worth trying to kill the player with it.

(Insert apology for long and rambly post... maby this apology should be added to my sig.)

I agree, but I wasnt saying every gun was the enforcer, I was just saying that with skill (and I left out luck) that the guy with the enforcer could kill guy x and gut gun r and the frag guy z with gun r to get gun y. thats all I was saying.
