Welcome to my world. Or at least what it was a few months ago.

I hate seeing one of our more notable names stop coming here because of angst towards a large group of people who think the same way about things. I too have pirated stuff on my computer...so? I can imagine that a fair portion of us do.

This is exactly what I was thinking about a day or two ago when I realized that I had stopped playing UT, which was one of the reasons I came to these forums in the first place...and I'm not the only one. Some people just come here to post on the forums and chat in #planetunreal...well, that's all well and good, but many of those people don't play UT any more or as frequently as they used to.

WAnk, you've been here for a long time. You've been a great PuFer and a great UT player...don't let one group of people drive you away, like they did DragonAsh and Troll.

I agree with what you have to say WAnk. I too have some pirated software... Im not happy about it and I wont excuse it but its a fact...

I didnt have a great amount of input in that thread but having pirate software is one thing. Publically announcing it as if your proud of it (probably not how it was meant but thats what it looked like) is a totally different thing.

Dont leave over this... there are a lot of bandwagon jumpers around but theres still a lot of good peeps about

Well, WAnk, if you need a little background on the opinions of the guy, they aren't good for the most part. I don't really have an opinion, and frankly I don't care to have one. Normally, I only see one side to a conversation on these forums: the side that seems to be the bigger one in posts. I think this is an issue most people have too.

There is way too much hyprocrisy about our community, and way too much heat has developed these days. It is times like these when I'd like to hop in the way back machine to this time last year.

I do agree that there are way too many wagon jumpers around.. I know how easy it is to get involved in that sort of thing but it still doesnt make it right. I try to sit on the sidelines and watch the action nowadays... its more fun

But I think some people were saying that they think pirating is bad (which is a valid opinion) and Terminal was saying that he didn't pirate it and it wasn't stealing or whatever. Then people jumped on his case and were like, "Look dummy, you got it, you didn't pay for it, its stealing!"

WAnk here is being honest. He says, I do this, its illegal, its stealing, but I do it. Once people are being straight up and honest, you can have a discussion about the issue. There are arguments on both sides. A) Pirating is wrong, its stealing. B) If I pirate stuff I would never otherwise try, and like it, then buy it, its actually good for the industry, I am buying games I otherwise wouldn't. C) The industry works hard on their products and deserves to be paid if you use them D) The industry charges too much for their products, Cliffy B is living the Donald Trump life off of one freaken game.

It could really get to be a good discussion. In fact it has been a good discussion in several threads. Fact is, when you don't like someone you give them less leeway in these kinds of things. Terminal has been rubbing everyone's nerves for a while. I have been out of the PuF mix for a bit, so I'm not sure what its about, I just know that he isn't well liked. So when people start the "Pirating is bad" argument and he responds with "I'M NOT A PIRATE YOU *&#$(*&#@*(" you know people are gonna get on his case.

Personally, I lean towards the pirating is bad side of the argument for computer games. The computer game industry is tough, some companies like EPIC and Blizzard seem to be sitting pretty, but lots of companies are struggling. The T2 company laid off like everyone right after T2 was released. I think its an industry that needs support. I paid for UT, Diablo, and T2, the only games I have.

I have absolutely no problem with pirating if people buy the games they like. If people spend $50 on a crap game that they only play once, it encourages the industry to make more crap games. That's why in that Terminal thread, all I said was "I hope you paid for UT, because CliffyB is gonna use the money to make Unreal2 and Unreal Warfar super PIMP!" If you pirated Diakatana, and saw how bad it sucked, and just ininstalled it, I wouldn't blame you one bit. But if you are playing a pirated game for weeks and weeks, why not throw a few bucks at the dudes who made it so they can make the next one even better. In fact, someone recently DCCed me some worm game or something. I have no idea what it is. I haven't installed it yet. But if I like it, I will buy my copy so they will make more fun wormy games.

On the other hand, I am totally in favor of MP3 distribution. I thought it sucked when Napster got killed. In New Orleans, bands make their money when you go to see them. They make enough to live off of that way. When Metallica does one of their huge arena tours for $60 a ticket, they make zillions of dollars. If I tape a Metallica song off the radio rather than buy the tape, but I pay $60 to see them and another $55 for the t-shirt, I am not ripping them off. If I make a copy of that tape for a friend, I still don't see it as a crime. That friend is gonna listen to it and he will wind up seeing them in concert and buying the t-shirt. Napster was just a high tech way of making tapes for friends. And the statistics showed that Napster didn't effect CD sales at all. There wasn't the tiniest drop in sales.

Many people will say that Napster was totally evil and that I was wrong for using it. And many people will say that pirating software is no worse than Napstering MP3s and I am wrong for thinking its worse somehow. These are just my opinions. The only thing I really get adamant about is that I think everyone who plays UT should pay for their copy. And that is for my personal selfish reasons. The more EPIC makes from UT, the more they can justify spending on other games. I think its wrong if people are playing pirated copies of Quake, but I probably won't pull the same attitude I pull when I hear someone is using a pirated UT. I know, I should be consistent based on right and wrong, but I'm being honest here. If I hear someone is pirating macintosh games, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.
