Yes, I've had some reports of intermittant shutdowns
and I am trying to figure out why.
It's difficult because there are ususally no errors logged in
the log file.

If you want to you can try disabling Kick voting and disable the
welcome and keybinder windows. This might help.

Here's yer error in the log file:

Log: Server switch level: CTF-Palace.unr.unr?game=BotPack.CTFGame
Log: Browse: CTF-Palace.unr.unr?Name=Player?Class=Botpack.TMale2?Team=0?skin=SoldierSkins.blkt?Face=SoldierSkins.Othe llo?mutator=BDBMapVote3.BDBMapVote3?game=BotPack.CTFGame
Log: LoadMap: CTF-Palace.unr.unr?Name=Player?Class=Botpack.TMale2?Team=0?skin=SoldierSkins.blkt?Face=SoldierSkins.Othe llo?mutator=BDBMapVote3.BDBMapVote3?game=BotPack.CTFGame

Warning: Failed to load 'Level None.MyLevel': Can't find file 'CTF-Palace.unr.unr'
ScriptLog: ProcessServerTravel: CTF-Palace.unr.unr?game=BotPack.CTFGame

Notice the extra .UNR extension? Happens on my server (Win2K,256mb,OC3) every few hours or so. Could happen on the second map you play since a restart, or it might be the tenth. Doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason :(

No , that error is not related at all to the problem above.
This appears to be a problem with the map list.
Are you using the map cycle list to load the map list ?

If so then,
Check your map list in the UnrealTournament.ini file to see if that
map is listed like this:
Map[1]=CTF-Palace.unr.unr

If you see nothing wrong with the map list then send me a copy
of the [BDBMapVote3.BDBMapVote3] section of your INI file and
the MapList if you are using map lists.

I'm not using the Maplist, and CTF-Palace isn't on it in any case. Here's the .INI section:

Thanks for posting dpu, I'll look into the code that removes the
"UNR" from the map names.

Oh, can you check the MapVoteHistory1.ini file.
Look in there and see if
1. All the map names are in alphabetic order - if not delete this file.
2. If any of the maps have ".unr" extentions on them.
They should not. If they do delete this file.

Sorry, the question I posted about the MapList wasn't intended
for you. It was in response to dpu's post.

I'm still working on your problem.

well, there were two ctf-palace entries (one with and one without the .unr extension) and map[0] was empty, so i deleted the file. i'll let you know if it stays working this time :)

thanks

still crashes once in a while (no obvious reason in the log, just says "critical error"), but not too often. problem now is HORRIBLE lag for the first minute of play when there's more than about 4 people on the map. when the map changes (even to one of the standard ones, like CTF-Face), all players experience 1500+ ping rates and 50% - 100% packet loss for the first minute of the game. there are 83 maps on the server (216.218.201.200), and this only happens when Mapvote is installed (i've checked by removing the lines in UT.ini that call it - works fine then) and there's more than about 4 people on. server was recently upgraded to 512mb of ram (Win2000, OC3 connection, 10GB SCSI drive).

any ideas?

I doubt that MapVote is causing the lag.
It could have been a coincidence that removing it temporarily
removed the lag.
I can not think of any reason why MapVote would cause lag at
the beginning of the game.
There are many many causes of lag.
The only problem that I know of related to MapVote is with the Reports.
They can cause a short bit of lag when a player runs it and
if you have a lot of maps.
Also, UT's Web Admin can cause lag if you have a lot of maps.

Also, I've heard a lot of server admins complain of lag caused by
Windows 2000.

the Win2k problem is mainly "creeping ping" when the UWEB process is running - this is disabled on my server because of that. not saying that Win2k is anywhere near perfect, however, so don't get me wrong :)

i like running Mapvote, but seriously, when i remove the line in ut.ini that calls it, everything works perfectly. when i re-add the line, i get this lag thing. CSHP40 is also running on the machine (newest "final" version of it). could that be interfering? only other odd thing might be that there are 2 servers running (ports 7777 and 7790), but only the 7777 (default port) one uses Mapvote. could this be funking it out? the 7790 server doesn't seem to have this problem at all...

it's a freaky issue :(

Ok, here are some ideas:

1. Are you using redirected/compressed downloads and is
the web server that servers the UZ files on the same server ?

2. Did you look at your log file for anything unusual.
3. Check the CPU usage on the server with Task Manager.
See if the CPU is at or near 100% when you are experiencing
the lag.
4. Do you have the latest W2K service pack ?
5. Is there a limit to the number of server connection licences in
Win2k like there is in WinNT Server ?
6. Is there anything else running on this server (other than the
other instance of UT) ?
7. Is the other instance of UT using a different INI file ?
8. Did you kick the server a few times and curse at it ? (haha just kidding)

dpu

1: yes, and yes.
2: yes, everything seems fine until "CriticalError" followed by shutdown messages.
3: yes, CPU usage hits about 70% during a map change, then drops back down to 5% as soon as it's loaded (maybe 10 seconds).
4: no, using SP1 right now with the CodeRed patch.
5: there is a limit, but since it is a dedicated host (ie. not our own hardware or licenses), it's set to 10000 concurrent connections - i can't change it.
6: yes: IIS (12 domains), email, ftp, 2 UT servers, DNS, and Terminal Services.
7: yes, different INI files. Yesterday I copied the other file (from the server without the lag problem), and all I changed was the admin stuff, server info stuff, port #, and added the BDB line.
8: i wish - it's in Iowa and i'm in alberta :)

Ok, Here is a guess.
When you have MapVote enabled players have to download it
from the UZ web server causing lag because it is on the same
server.

Also, there are some fixes for TCP/IP related stuff in Win2K SP2.
Not sure if it is related or not.

I've same problem as described above.
Running RH Linux. After several mapchanges or during gameplay my server crashing.
I must disable MapVote for now :(
I attach some logs which described that.

I removed server info page (html) from MapVote and everything is going fine for now. No crashes.
