View Full Version : Full rebuild causes BSP trouble?! WTF!

I've been having some BSP hole trouble on my current CTF map, and in attempting to solve this, I've noticed something puzzling. When I just do a geometry rebuild, and a lighting rebuild: I have no problems. If I do a full rebuild, then I have problems, i.e., the lower third of my red base disappears and reappears when I stand in certain areas. What is it in the full rebuild that is different from just a geometry/lights rebuild? I know there's botpathing and all that, but I haven't done any of that, and it wouldn't affect BSP anyways.

What in the full rebuild would mess with the BSP, that isn't messed with in the geometry rebuild?

Cous,
When you do a full rebuild, it rebuilds your BSP, cuts portals,
balances the BSP tree, you've seen this on the rebuild sliders,
that's what they mean. When you just rebuild geometry it doesn't do these things. I've had this happen to me as well cause I was getting careless and just rebuilding geometry for a "quick fix". Generally it's a good idea to do a full rebuild after adding some major geometry, then at least if you get HOM or holes you know that it has something to do with what you just added, or subtracted, and it won't be so hard to track down than if you buried yourself under build after build of just geometry.
If your just aligning textures and stuff, rebuild geometry and lighting is fine. So unless you can track down the brush that's creating the problem, you can try adjusting those sliders, although I've had no luck with it in the past myself.
Anyway you can always offer up the file for some of us to look at, always helps to have another set of eyes to track down a problem.

Okay, if you got the time, have a look.

The screenshots are of the red base after a full rebuild. Notice the glaring bsp holes. Arrrgh! Now the attached file is my map before the full rebuild. I just did a rebuild of geometry and lights. You'll notice if you walk through the map that those holes aren't there.

Do a full rebuild, then check it out. The holes should be there if you stand in the same spots. What a pisser. Do I have to finish the map without ever doing a full rebuild? I'm fine with that, but it seems like I'm missing out on some essential behind-the-scenes calculations if I do that.

Anybody who takes the time to figure out this one gets to be my new best friend. (Woohoo! What an incentive!);)

Oh and by the way, this map is not finished, all the lights are half-assed and temporary, same goes for any item placement. But any other input on the map is very welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Okay, it wouldn't let me attach my map. I'm assuming it's too big. (4 megs) Okay, now I need some help on what I can do to attach my map. Any suggestions for the feeble minded?

K, I was just gonna post on that but I tried refresh insted, lol.
Well, did you zip it? Can't be that big zipped, unless you've got textures included.

Nope, zipped it, and it still didn't work. Hmmmmmm, I did include some textures so maybe thats the problem....dammit. Oh well, whatever. And its only 2 A.M. here and I don't hit the sack 'til 5 A.M. usually. My job messes with my schedule.
