View Full Version : carbine
hi guys, i've been trying to look this up on the internet for a few months now and haven't been able to find anything good enough, so could you guys tell me? what is a carbine?
Lost
car·bine (n): A lightweight rifle with a short barrel.
It is derived from the French word "carabine", from Old French "carabin", or soldier armed with a musket. The word as applied to modern firearms does not necessarily mean an automatic rifle; any rifle action so long as it meets the conditions of being (relatively) lightweight and a (relatively) short barrel, is a carbine. Some examples:

De Lisle suppressed carbine:

Russian M44 carbine (I own one of these):

Colt R6520 Government Carbine:

There are two sides to the pronounciation of carbine - car·BYNE and car·BEEN. I pronounce it as the former, because other words spelled similarily sound this way (ie. com·bine). Anyone who pronounces it car·BEEN is a heretic and must be burned at the stake immediately. /infopop/emoticons\icon_wink.gif Hope this helps.
