I suggest that you read Black Hawk Down by Marc Bowden. Its a richly detailed recount and analysis of the tragedy that left 18 US Army Rangers/Delta Force Operators dead during operation 'Restore Hope' in Somalia. One of the best and few books on modern war around, its reads great, is now out in paperback; and I can gaurantee that you wont want to put it down.

Dont think so, 'Operation Restore Hope' was the name for the larger operation that involved the Army as a peacekeeping role between the Somali warlords and also to help distribute food. And I mispoke it was 18 Rangers/Delta men that were killed while trying to apprehend a Somali warlord..its all in the book /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Shak: Any info or books on what happened there? I'm doing a paper on Military Air accidents in recent years and I could use the info.

Well, Eagle Claw was the Iran embassy rescue mission that ended in Delta operators being killed (in the helicopter refeuling accidnet)before they even got a chance to get to the target yes? That was the early 80's I believe, so I dont know if youre looking for later incident, but The Commandos by Douglas Waller has a good recount of that, also the goverment may have released some previously clasfied documents about the crash as there was surely an investigation that, if de-classfied, you could get through the Freedom of Information Act, thats all that I got..

Welp, The operation started fine. It was a joint ranger/delta opp. But when the op was to execute, one of the choppers became unserviceable due to a sandstorm and they were forced to abort because they needed 6 choppers for the op.

During extraction, an RH-53d crashed into a Herc as it was taking off. The C-130 was carrying ammo supplies and exploded.

3 USAF crew on the Herc an 5 Marines in the RH53 bought it.

An airstrike was later called in to destroy the remaining choppers.
