View Full Version : What is the cock-off of a Gun?(Gryphon?)

I read the specification of the HK G11 and read about a higher cock-off temperature. But I couldn't find this Word in the dictionary. It wuld be nice if someon can describe me what this is, cock-off temperature.

LOL, you mean Cook-off, don't you.

I think that means when the chamber gets so hot the hammer doesn't even need to hit the bullet for it to fire, so that the powder just ignites from the extreme heat.

I've heard of and seen heavy machine guns (not sure what kind) reaching cook-off temp... then they go into "runaway" mode or something where they keep firing even after the trigger is let go. Pretty scary **** if you ask me...

My best guess would be because the chambers of the machine gun (I'm assuming we're talking about a belt-fed machine gun here) are not properly cool or are being over used (much like in any firearm.) The consecutive blasts in the chamber would heat it up. The time between the rounds being prepped and fired would give it some time, but not enough time, to cool down, thus the temperature would slowly rise until it reached above the flashing point of gun powder, and the heat would dissipate into the cartridge itself, flash the powder, and send it on its way
