Hi I fired both, the Walther P1 (P38) 9mm and the 1911A1 (or what type ever they use in the early 80s) from US, but good luck never got hit by any. The difference for me was small, because I was a lousy pistolshooter but the colt made more fun...
What I want to ask is the story of that gun. I think I read that the pistol was designed with this amunition because of experinces from the US troops on the Phillipines. They wanted a gun which could stop a phillipine warrior stimulated by drugs. This warriors could not be stopped by normal calibres... Is this correct or is it only a fairy-tale???

The History Channel has a good show called "Tales of the gun", featured the works of John Browning, try to catch the show if you can.
Browning invented the first slide-action autoloading pistol, but it was in .38 caliber as I recall, and the army wasn't too pleased with it. He later updated it to .45 caliber, and it was accepted in 1911. a few minor additions (like a stop between the grip and the hammer) were introduced later, making it the 1911a1. It remained in active survice untill 1985. Then in the 1990's it was picked up again by some US military units.
I'll dig up a more in depth history on it later on, don't happen to have it on hand right now, just in memory. /infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Okay, I really am not a 1911 fan nor of the .45, but I took a short look to that page, and the part I found most interesting is the 1911vsM9 comparison.
It was very good written and in no way biased. I guess that both weapons positive sides were shown well, though I heard the M9 didn't jam often in DS. I guess that man was true, both about the M9 safety and the 1911s better stopping power.
I also really liked he didn't answer the question about wheter it was agood idea to replace the 1911.
