last night I went over to the folks house, and while digging through some stuff in my old room (which has now become a storeroom) I found my old briefcase with all my old TopSecret stuff. (for those of you too young to remember, it was a role playing game, kind of a D&D meets 007 thing).

So I remember back in the day playing TopSecret and one of my friends had Ice bullets in his sniper rifle (I think the concept originaly came from 'Man from U.N.K.L.E).

So this got me thinkging is (was) there really such a thing? It would seem to me that if you kept the bullets in liquid nitrogen until right before you loaded them into the rifle they might work (for a shot or two, but as an assisin that's all you need)

The benifit would be that there would be no balistics information for the forensic team to recover.

So what, in your expert opinion, would be the feasibility of ice bullets?

Ok, enough stupid questions, I gotta get back to work. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif˝

I remember hearing about this once, cant remember where...

Wouldnt a bullet made out of ice, once fired, melt? From the propellent, the friction of the barrel, and so on...

just my thought. But liquid nitro.. wouldnt that freeze the chamber of the gun, let alone be able to fire the thing without freezing every other part of the gun...

Gryphon, come on down! You're the next contestant on the odd questions of firearms show! or something /infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

I feel the reason as it's leaving me, no, not again

Its quite decieving as I'm feeling the flesh made me bad

Just the idea of putting water in my gun upsets me terribly.

I think the "bullet" would probably melt long before it hit its target due to air friction. It would also be impossible to predict the trajectory of the bullet as it melts thus changing the dimensions of the projectile.

:~)

I used to rock and roll all night and party every day. Then it was every other day. Now I'm lucky if I can find half an hour a week in which to get funky.

Yea, and if it didn't melt it would probably just shatter when the powder ignites... I would think putting an explosive charge inside the bullet itself would be a better way of getting rid of the evidence. Unless it wasn't powerful enough and they peiced the round back together. Hmm, maybe a sabot, that way the plastic covering takes the markings from the gunpowder and the bullet itself remains unscaved... but then you have to worry about them finding the bits of plastic. Aw hell, why don't you just take your gun with you and not get caught, that way they have no murder weapon to compare the markings with. (Or if you have money to burn, melt it down.)

Can you say 9mm APFSDS ammunition (Armor-Piercing, Fin-Stabalized, Discarding-SABOT)? God, that'd be sweet. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

you don't have to use water, there are lots of liquids that will freeze to a very hard state in liquid nitrogen.

We're not talking about making bullets in the kitchen with the freezer.

I don't think melting would be an issue, but even if there is some residue left in the gun, this is not something that you would fire whole clip load of. This is designed for 1 shot from a bolt action rifle and then you run away. Not so much a combat weapon, but an assassination weapon.

Hey, what the hell is the matter with you all? Is your name GRYPHON?! NO!! SO STOP REPLYING AND STEALING MY FAME AND GLORY!!!!! AAAAAARGH!!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Anyhow, my thoughts on the "ice bullet" have been summed up in multiple posts above. The frictional forces from air resistance and the barrel, burning propellant and primer slag, as well as the G forces would likely give you a nice mist at your muzzle and not much more. Dunno for sure though, never heard of it being tried.

Uh yeah, but that's 120mm and the recoil of the round is measured in tonnes... To be effective, APFSDS rounds need extremely high muzzle velocities like in the neighbourhood of 1650 metres a second which would produce very high recoil and also generally most APFSDS rounds are made of depleted uranium which when fired produces a very toxic gas... So I don't think we'll be seeing any pistols firing these rounds in the conceivable future /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
