HOW can u say that when working on Titanium wars?!
u tellin' me that theres not a tad of anime influence there (Patlabor?).
anyway:
Akira (the daddy!)
Ghost in the shell (ahh, the story)
wings of honiseamea (Damn sorry Keichii. one of
the biggest commercial flops of all time, took 7
years to break even [not enough violence] but
still a verry good story and the visuals!)
and Ninja scroll (weird!)

as far as series's i have only seen one
Guyver (now that cool)
but, i think i can inclued the Todd Mcfarlane comic character Spawn (its not japanise, but the animation and story is OK)

mellenium hand and shrimp

Anyone here seen the Rurouni Kenshin OAVs/OVAs? They're just brilliant. The original Kenshin TV series was ok too (except for some episodes, like the ridiculous Shishio vs. Kenshin/Saitoh/Sanosuke/Aoshi fight episodes and the whole Fusui arc), but the OAVs totally own me. Brilliant animation, good plot and amazing fight scenes (lightyears away from the sometimes tacky regular Kenshin fight scenes).

Anyways, my anime favorites:
Akira (I like the manga better tho)
Ninja Scroll (brilliant action)
Wings Of Honneamise (Best anime film EVER)
Ghost In The Shell (almost better than the manga)
Lain (weird but good)
Perfect Blue (also one of the best anime films ever)

yes I do work for it, but I don't make the mechs. And if I ever make them they will never look like they were influenced by anime.

battletech has influence from japanese manga and several books from various authors that discussed the use of giant robots as arms platforms in warfare.

My fav *jap* animation not including anime:
Ghost in the shell - violence and action galore

Macross Plus and most Robotech - not Macross 2 tho, loved the Mecha. These were the "classics".

Ninja Scroll - absolutely beautiful choreography and action scenes

Submarine Blue Six - fantastic 3D + traditional anime, action woo hoo

Neon Genesis: Evangalion - x-files conspiracies + fantastic mecha action.

El Hazard - original series, OVAs and other spawns. Darned entertaining stuff.

Sorceror Hunters - only the first 2 episodes, damned funny

BTW, do you guys have the english dubbed versions, english subtitled version or maybe Cantonese/Mandarin versions of those anime? I try to get English subs whenever possible, the japanese voice acting is generally a lot better.

Oh, missed one - Burn Up Warrior, damned funny.

Yeah. I always go for English subtitled. The English voice-overs are almost never as good as the original Japanese dialog. They'll also completely mangle the script and, by doing so, alter a characters entire personality.

A good example of this is in Oh My Goddess!. The whole premise of the series is that this Goddess misinterprets a guy's wish. In the Japanese version, he says "I want a girl like you to be with me forever." She then misinterprets this as him wanting her to be with him forever, and "hillarity ensues". In the English version, they changed the line to "I want you to be with me forever.". In that case, there is no misinterpretation, which destroys the whole idea behind the series.

There are some brilliant dubs tho. Ghost in the Shell and Armitage 3 (The english version had Kiefer Sutherland and Elizabeth Berkley) were both brilliantly dubbed (I like the dubbed versions better than the originals)

Oh, forgot one of the best anime series ever..Trigun. Brilliant humor, action and songs. Definately one of my favorite anime series.

Yeah, the dubbing can really suck sometimes... But I have a minor gripe about the Rurouni Kenshin series; Himura Kenshin's voice is done by this really deep voiced woman...

Man, most anime is messed up. I saw some clips and all it looked like to me were lingerie wearing women getting dismembered. Well, at least the anime thats not like Ranma 1/2(which i believe is about some transforming high schoolers?). Those are quite different.

But i really liked the street fighter movies! I saw some of the series and it was soo cool. Umm, *cough*.

quote:
Man, most anime is messed up. I saw some clips and all it looked like to me were lingerie wearing women getting dismembered.[/quote]

That's more than likely because most people focus on violence and nudity as the primary difference between eastern and western animation. Most people forget just how much of what they watch on T.V. is actually from Japan. Gundam, Tenchi, Sailor Moon, Dragonball, and Pokemon, just to name a few. All of them are Japanese anime, yet you'd be hard pressed to find nudity in any of them.

It's sad that most people consider anime to be nothing more than animated pornography. Granted, there are quite a few that are full of nudity and violence, but there are so many more that aren't. Most people never get past the "Hey, look! That cartoon has nekid' women in it!" stage. Anime is just like any other television show or movie. Pornography is just one genre out of a hundred. You won't find anything in an anime that you won't find in a traditional live-action movie.

This leads me to one of my personal beefs with America. Why does practically every American think that animated movies must, by definition, be made for children? Why does every American animation have to be a musical? Did you ever wonder about that?

Hmm, kinda ripping that out of context there Keiichi? Well I know of many animated movies that are definently not for kids. Hentai is one, though i do not watch them. Even though i consider myself out of the ordinary as far as making assumptions though, so i can't put myself with the majority. But from that one clip i was referring too, well. It was really weird and i saw it quite a while ago, but what i do remember was a woman trying to escape from some sort of prison. And as she ran for some reason strings shot out of a door way and cut off her legs. There was NO blood! She didn't bleed! Weird stuff.

Though animation allows a greater range of ideas, for instance things that could not possibly be put into film, they are not on the top of my list of must sees. I may go out and rent one, maybe.

Not only american, the questions is why does every "adult" think that animated movies and cartoons must, by definition, be made for children.
I've asked a few people and found many wouldnt think of sitting down to watch an animated movie, much less a cartoon. Why's that?

Just thought I'd have a go at kicking the dead horse.. *ahem* Stating Off with the Battletech thing, a few deal of the mech designs (Marauder, Pheonix hawk, Crusader, off the top of my head) were ripped from the old Robotech/macross series, and in general the whole "gigantic walking godlike robot" idea is generally accepted to have been origionated by the Japanese, making it's first apperaances in 1940's manga. *gets down off soabpbox*

Anyway, Fave anime

Legend of Crystania
Gestalt,
Blue Subamrine #6
Battle Angel
Princess Mononoke
Sorceror Hunters
Wings of Honneamise.
Trigun
Perfect Blue
Neon Genesis evengelion
Tenchi Muyo
Gunbuster
(and misc other crap.

Frankly, I don't think that most classic animation was done only for children. Watch old Bugs Bunny and other cartoons from the 30s and 40s, many of them have very adult themes.

I think in the 60s with the beginings of television, animation became something for the kiddies because it was cheap to produce, so kids shows could be made cheaper. And you must admit that children respond to cartoons.

There's several examples of american animation that's not for kids. Heavy Metal is one, but I don't think The Simpsons or Futurama are for kids, neither is Family Guy, and don't get me started on how adult Ren and Stimpy is (John K got his start doing animated porn!).

And while kids seem to like them, I think many of Cartoon Networks cartoos are for adults (my 39yr old wife is a Power Puff Girls addict, and I myself can't seem to leave the living room if Dexters Lab is on)

Animation (let's not use that ever so dirty word...cartoon) was, for a time, relatively adult orientated. You only have to look at WW2 animations (some including Warner Bros. characters) made as educational promos for soldiers. During the 1950s however, there arose the great Dark Lord himself...

...WALT DISNEY (children run screaming from room)

/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

*ahem*
Anyway, Disney wrecked everything by making stuff purely for kids, and the 1950s conservatism helped no end to eliminate such nonsense as 'adult' animation. While there was the occasional thing, like Fritz the Cat, and the awesome, awesome Heavy Metal, animation was for the most part mainly for kids (or children sorry)

Enter the 90s:
Thankfully, we are now seeing the re-emgerence of animation with an adult bent now. Some good examples mentioned previously include Futurama and Family Guy. Also, animation marketers are beginning to realise that the age range between when kids feel they're too 'mature' for animation and college (where supposedly they pick up animation again) is a market too long ignored.

And hence ends today's lesson.
