Computers and the Future, Good or Bad?

Many people seem to think that computers and/ or robots will be the end of the world. Even though most of the people that would answer this are computer nerds (I know I am!) I think computers are a long way from equaling or bettering humanity in any respect. Computers are just a tool, like any power tool, to asist us in our everyday life. They do not need and will probably never have anything near sentience. There is no threat to humanity involving the computers themselves.
Robots are an object of fear to hundreds. They think that if we build an intelligent robot, it will immediatly see humans as inferior and destroy them. Guess what? It's already happened. We do have semi-intelligent robots, and guess what? They work at hospitals. Right now, humanity has the ability to build robots that can live everyday life, to a degree. But human fear has not allowed us to. The only possible way robots could destrot humanity is if we are not careful enough to program them right.
So if there is no threat to us from robots and computers, how did they get such a bad rep? The media. Producers have used robots and computers as enemys for a long time. Also, humanity has a ceertain primitive fear of robots and computers. They are emotionless and lack the love of a pet or person. The coldness and harshness of metal has a certain digree of mistrust. I am not calling anyone who thinks robots and computers are bad an idiot. These people have good reasons. The instinctive fear, and the caution of being overpowered are good things, proving that we need to be cautious as we enter this new age. Feel free to shoot me down or put arguments about this post.

yo jarvis, an automaton robot cant rule the world, a non reasoning computer cannot rule the world. As for sentient robots/computers, how are you going to teach it right and wrong? How are you going to impress morality on them? And after you have taught it right and wrong, and morality, it will take one look at the world "And say it is bad" for it is the great flaw of humankind who are not perfect.

Feel free to debate this. Waaaay off topic though

AI

The day AI is mastered, is the day I'm putting this glock in my mouth.

Is that master or mastered because currently I think some of us master AI... Some of us anyway /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

uhh

I mean towards the idea that when artificial intelegence is realeased. When its finished and everyone is saying "WOW, look what Billy did now!" I'm gonna fucking kill myself, I don't want a fucking computer washing my dishes, next thing you know it will start hitting on me, get me in the sac and stab me with a steak knife it hid in a compartment on its back. No fucking way man.

Despite the fact that near perfect "AI" is in use today, it's all simulated. You could, and people have, make a very convincing artificial computer or robot. It would not be sentient, of course, but would seem to be in many respects.

As to possible robot takeover, i don't think so. Why would someone want to do something like that anyway? Doesn't make sense to me. One of the biggest things that would make a conscient being out of todays hardware style impractical(Quantum computers, oh yea, they could do it in theory), is that everything would have to be given or broken down into quantitative arguments. No "close enough" or "something likes" could be assumed unless specifically programmed.

Some programming languages even attempt to take on realistic seeming AI, that of course is an illusion. LISP is one i believe.
