View Full Version : SUVs and why I hate them.

I live in Minnesota where it seems like everyone and his brother owns an SUV. I see one everywhere I go. And, you know what? They are really starting to piss me off! No one needs a freaking Sports Utility Vehicle just to drive half a mile down to the grocery store. Minneapolis/St. Paul may not be New York City, but it's not exactly freaking Siberia either. Now, I'd be willing to let this all slide as a minor annoyance, except for the people that drive them.

Whenever I crane my neck upwards so that I can see the person in the drivers seat, it's always some little 5'4" prune, or a wanker hillbilly with a ratty baseball cap and a cigarete in his mouth. Even this would be acceptable if it weren't for the way they drive.

It doesn't matter if your doing 160 in a 30mph zone, they still think you're going too slow. Nothing is more annoying than looking in my rear view mirror and seeing nothing but a big-ass grill with a Dodge logo in the center. This brings me to my final, and most recent, reason for hating them.

I got off work at 7:00PM today and headed for home. Now, at this time of year in Minnesota, it's just about pitch black at 7:00PM. As I turned onto my street, some dumbass in an SUV pulled up behind me with his high beams on. The damn things reflected right off my rear view mirror and went straight into my eyes. I was now effectively blind, but I was right at my driveway, so I just made the turn anyway. However, I had driven just a bit too far and missed my driveway, hitting the curb with my right front tire before I could bring it around. The car jumped about a foot into the air and, when it came down, I heard a huge *BOOM*. So, I drove to the end of my driveway and got out to inspect my tire. As it turns out, I not only blew out my tire, but also put a huge f*cking dent in my hubcap. So, now I get to limp down to the auto shop tomorrow and shell out $100 to have it replaced. If that damn SUV hadn't been tailgating me with his high-beams on, this never would've happened.

I drive a BRIGHT reddish/orange Porsche with headers and a supertrapp muffler (that means it FUKCING LOUD!) and dumbasses in SUV's still can't see me.

Here its usualy the soccermom who's too busy shuttling her brats to activity after activity (so she doesn't actualy have to PARENT them), she's too preoccupied with the kids' schedule and whatever conversation she's having on her freakin cell phone to actualy pay attention to the road!

I hope they all have Firestone tires and keep putting off the recall.

Tonight, in fact, I was almost run off the road by some CLOWN in a suburban (I sh!t you not, an actual clown! It is Halloween you know).

SUV's (A.K.A 4WD's) are absolute deathtraps !! they have NO energy absorbsion abilities at all, they rely on what they hit to have it. any sedan that gets hit by one has it's crumple zones ETC redered practially useless because the SUV's impact area is dead set in the window of the sedan.

The other reason i hate them is because out here we have the ADF, which checks cars and crap for road saftey, dont pass ADF can't buy it out here. the only ADF rule an SUV passes is that it has A F*CKING seatbelt.

But you cant get a Ducati 996SP because its hi-beam and low-beam headlights are two different globes.

i guess it's justice then, that i see a head on between two SUV's /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif which i did, damn i was cheering, but no one could figure out why i was laffing. oh well, suck on that you f*cking yuppies, burn in hell all you wankers, and take your gold plated mirrors with you !!!!!!!!!!

Not to mention that they have horrible fuel milage, they block your view on the road of what is ahead (Ive been boxed in by the damn things too many times), are an incredible rollover hazard, and they just plain suck (in my opinion).

I respect those who actually use them for what they were designed for. If I ever moved out of suburbia, and actually had a need for one, I would buy it. Until then, never.

BeerBaron, I would also respect the original Range Rover as an SUV.

Go '87 Toyota Camry, 4 cylinder complete with spark plugs, and fine cloth interior with plastic molding!!! A fine quality automobile if I ever saw one.

Whatever...

I live in St.Paul MN and the drivers here, unless they're expatriates from another state, seem to regard the turn signal as an optional device, and that turning left from the right lane is just fine...I drive a VW Scirrocco and have nearly been flattened by Explorers, Blazers and Suburbans. When snow hits they get even more stupid. I have never lived in place with crappier drivers.

Cool. I bought my car at the White Bear Lake Polar Chevrolet dealer. $7000 for a '96 Pontiac Sunfire in like-new condition. The only downside was that it had 75,000 miles on it.

The only place, IMO, that people should be driving SUV's is in a game like 4X4 Evolution. Which is a great game, incidently. I've gotten hooked on just the demo alone!

I drive a 91' Ford Explorer. And while I don't consider it to be an SUV, (It's a fukkin' TRUCK dammit!) It seems like a lot of people put it into that category. Even so, I am getting really annoyed with all this SUV crap, Both the tanking bastards on the road and the static they get. What mostly bugs me is that they spend all this money on their Gigantic-Internal-combustion-powered-steel-plated-rolling-death-machines(tm) and never USE them for anything.. I consider my Explorer to be a goddam truck and use it as such. I'm either hauling the 14 cubic tons of **** that comprises the contents of my dorm room around, or bouncing around offroad in the desert. Enough of this pansy SUV crap. Most of these damn machienes aren't even specced to to anything other than cruise. Using a truck to go grocery shopping once a week and drive your friends to your tupperware party is like buying a Greyhound and keeping it locked in a tiny cage. (And/or using an ICBM as an anti-personell weapon) Oh, and safety? they're only "safer" than "normal" cars becuase they're guarnteed to smash through them, sort of like hitting a fat gerbil with a baseball bat. What the F*** is a SUV anyways? I seem to remember something called a truck...but apparently it went extinct with the advent of soccer moms. (Probably vote democrat too...Grrr!)

Come on, God. Answer me. For years I'm asking you why: Why are the innocent dead and the guilty alive? Where is justice, where is punishment? Or have you already answered. Have you already said to the world, here is justice, here is punishment. Here...in me...

Reminds me of a video I saw once...some former Army guy stole a tank from an Army base in St.Louis(?) and went on a rampage with it...and the cops couldn't do a damn thing about it! Luckily, he tried to climb a concrete highway barricade with it and got hung up, and the police were able to get inside and shoot him...but not before he flattened quite a few cars, streetlights, and other various things.

Scary thought, isn't it...exactly what *do* you do with a guy in a tank who's intent on running over everything in his path?

I personally dislike SUVs coz they are the most fuel inefficient, gas guzzling, dirty burning vehicles on the road. They are also designed for safety - safe for the SUV's occupants but bad for the other vehicles it hits.

I always thought that SUV's were designed to be stable, but seems they arent. You can do lots of amazing stuff on uneven terrain but on a road turning a corner seems to be a hazard all of a sudden. I dont claim to know the stability and reliability of an SUV, but I just saw one roll-over doing a tight corner. But of course, the driver was going quite fast. I dont claim to know about how safe you would be in an SUV but the SUV that did the belly-up rolled over a Honda Accord and a Corrola while a BMW and a Volvo piled up behind it.

The Honda's driver was squashed, the woman in the passenger seat was bleeding all over the place and her right arm was a mess. The Corrola was smashed to smithereens. Out of the entire fracas, only the Volvo seemed relatively unharmed.

Why is it that the bigger the vehicle you are driving gives some people a worse attitude?

And why is it yuppies have to have their amplifiers up max so that every pedastrian can hear whut the beat of your music sounds like?

Ak
6th Nov 2000, 01:34 PM
Yeah, that actually happened... In Califronia, right around where I used to live, some guy (I think he was a civilian) who had access to the base just sorta wandered on, started the damn thing and took off. We had lots of good footage on the local news..And yeah, there really isn't much that can stop 600+ turbine-driven horsepower and 80 tons 'o rolling steel..(Not to mention 120mm cannon..)
They actually drove an M1A1 Abrams down Orange Avenue in the 4th of July parade, blowing smoke and cranking the turret around. It was probably the coolest thing I'd ever seen on the road. Even with the ruberized treads, it was tearing the hell out of the asphalt...
I'll ask for one this christmas...u

you know less than 10% of all offroad wehicle owners ever take their vehicle off road.

i went with my dad to pick up some lumber and had to convince the guy at the lumber yard to just load the wood in the truck. He kept insisting we put down a bunch of cardboard so it didn't tear the bed up. it's a truck, a work vehicle, that's what it's for.

Suv's arent' even suited for offroad use. My car has more off road capability than most suv's have. (I drive a 92 Crownvic police sedan /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )

Where i live people's reasoning for 4wd is to get them around in the winter. 4wd only helps you get going and that dosn't really matter compared to other things. and anybody whod buy a vehicle to get through the few weeks when it's actually slick is a moron and shouldn't be driveing.
